AoWW Posted 1 August 2009 Posted 1 August 2009 I'm not normally a big fan of posting in 'RIP' threads but having just watched the tribute to this legendary man I wanted to add to the thread. Words like 'legend' are said so casually it seems, but he truly was. A fantastic ambassador for the sport, he remained passionate about it till the end. Incredibly humble and a true gentleman. Such a sad loss - he'll be missed by so many. Deepest condolences to his family. RIP
Daggers Posted 1 August 2009 Posted 1 August 2009 I'm delighted he's my first in the Death-thread. Delighted because, as I've said on here many times, I have nothing but the deepest admiration for the bloke. When Ole Big 'Ed died I felt a part of my love of football went too - Robson has taken a large chunk of the remaining piece. There are next to none left in the game who wrap up the values of the sport I used to love so much, so well. Bobby, you were a gent. Ta'ra now.

lou Posted 2 August 2009 Posted 2 August 2009 I watched that too. What a dignified man. I must admit I was close to tears towards the end. Same.... and I know Im gonna go and blub when they do the minutes applause at the 1st game. He was just such a top bloke and like some have already said its a massive loss to whats good about the game.

He was just such a top bloke and like some have already said its a massive loss to whats good about the game. Same. When he was talking about his cancer towards the end. And him and Gary were reminising . True legend. The micky mouse thing on the tactic board that Ruud Van Nistelroy was on about made me laugh though . Shows what a legned he was though when people like Ronaldo, Ruud and Figo are on the documentry R.I.P
Radovan's Caravan Posted 3 August 2009 Posted 3 August 2009 With all due respect, this is a lot of reverance for a man whose career achievements were hardly legendary. He never won a top division title within the UK (NB Ipswich won the old First Division under Ramsey immediately following promotion) and never won The European Cup/Champions League (three of the four continental clubs he coached won the top European honour with someone else and the odious Clough won two old Division One championships with sides broadly equivalent to Ipswich and two European Cups - now that is the stuff of legends). But he got you to a World Cup semi. Gimme strength - are you all Andorrans in disguise? Robson lost his job at Fulham because of violent conduct (laid out a player in the dressing room and then bragged about it), was widely rumoured to have operated a 'quota system' when selecting black players for your national side and was embroiled in a widely publicised sex scandal that nearly cost him the England job. It's a bit rich too that the media and NUFC are stirring up this mawkfest. The former slaughtered him for virtually the entirety of his England reign and the latter sacked him in circumstances that have never been fully explained. Perhaps some guilt involved here? And, as we all know, there are '000's of unclaimed season tickets awaiting collection by fairweather 'Toon till I Die' supporters (I wonder if there was a special 'Cry and Pay' scheme set up to mark the occasion?).

Sometimes respect for a man goes a little deeper than just the trophies he has won (of which there are many anyway).

Did he not transform Ipswich form a struggling club to a winning succesfull club. I'd like to see any manger win the Uefa Cup with a similar struggling side like that now. Sorry i forgott about the millions of times we've reached the semi's of a World Cup recentley or ever. His work spread deeper then just winning trophies. He discovered Ronaldo one of the best players ever. He nurtured players such as Ruud Van Nistelrooy to become the players the are today and gave them the believe and confidence they needed to go all the way. He got Newcastle into the Champions league knock out stage i believe when he was what 70? And where are the now. Did you see Sports Personality 2007 the standing ovation he recieved from the sporting world. How many other people could of recieved the same sort of appluase and accolaide for there work in sport or any other area. Not many is your answer. And not just that but outside of sport, He started his own charity outside of football to help people with a similar condition to his. And on one of the first days of the foundation 8 people discovered they had what he had and that possibly saved there lives. If Sir Bobby Robson is not a legend then there is not many people in sport who could be considered one.

The number of former clubs (including Barcelona), managerial contemporaries (including Ferguson and Wenger) and players queuing to pay respects tells us all we need to know about his stature in the game. Like many of the teams that he created, Robson had class - which is often all too lacking in the game, and is a quality you don't seem too familiar with either..
Fox92 Posted 21 September 2009 Posted 21 September 2009 The memorial is on Sky news now. Yes, watching it. Gary's talking now.
AjcW Posted 21 September 2009 Posted 21 September 2009 Well done Garry. This has been the perfect tribute so far, Football and Cricket the topics. Bobby wouldnt of wanted anything else.
sdb Posted 21 September 2009 Posted 21 September 2009 Nobody seemed to like his 'Get ready Garth' story. Gazza looked plain baffled.
Wycombe Fox Posted 18 January 2010 Posted 18 January 2010 I was randomly trawling the internet at the weekend and found this about Sir Bobby Robson and Sir Alf Ramsey; He (Sir Alf Ramsey) seemed to have felt nothing but disgust for his successors. At Ipswich, after he left for the England job, he refused to give Jackie Milburn any advice in his managerial career. Milburn was sacked after nine months, following Ipswich's relegation from the top flight. Neither did Ramsey get on with Bobby Robson, who some say did a better job than Ramsey as manager of Ipswich. Not only did Robson guide Ipswich to the FA Cup, the UEFA Cup, and a high place in the League, he also got England to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup. Many thought that Ramsey's attitude to Robson was evidence of jealousy - even though Robson failed to match his achievements in winning the English championship with Ipswich and the World Cup with England. Members of Ramsey's family have suggested that he was liable to take a negative view of anyone who took over one of his jobs. Shortly before he died, however, Ramsey passed on his thanks to Sir Bobby through Bobby's wife after the Robsons paid for his bills in his nursing home. Sir Bobby later declared that Alf was the greatest British football manager ever Legend.
