LEICESTER have made a £750,000 bid for Hartlepool midfielder Richie Jones, 22.

Not sure about this one if true, a neat and tidely midfielder formerly of Manchester Unied so he must be something, but not sure whether he is Championship material yet and we definetly don't need another midfielder sureley?

Link (also mentions lita)

If we sign players that improve the team awe need players in all positions.

Not really seen him play, but would give us greater options should oakley king or wellens get injured

Well with Clemence hopefully making a return, Adams looking tasty and Berner being Mr Handyman I really don't think 700k would be well spent in midfield. Plough the money into Lita's wages I say...

Looking at their fan sites, they were hoping for £50,000 when he handed in a transfer request a couple of days ago. Hopefully this is just the Sun getting things very wrong either on the transfer fee front or even the transfer itself.

:D That's a big difference, BUT for that price NP may think it's a good deal?????

could well be an agent trying to stir up interest in his player too...

Doesn't it say this Jones guy couldn't even get into the Hartlepool team? If he isn't good enough for them, he isn't good enough for us. Not interested, money can be used more effectively.

Can't comment on his ability, but surely midfield is not a priority. However, if he comes cheap, could well be worth it. Injuries are bound to happen, and options are always good.

I am still worried on the goalkeeping front though, as we don't appear to have quality in reserve, should an injury occur. Could be the mixture as before, and a string of loan signings!

I think there could actually be some subtance to this.

Jones handed in a Transfer request on Tuesday, Could this be because he heard we were in for him??

Made 42 appearances for Hartlepool last season (League and Cup), so would hardly say that he couldn't get in their team.

Only joined them last summer from Man Utd, where he'd made 5 first team appearances (albeit cup games).

Sounds like he left Man U to get first team football, impressed at Hartlepool, and has made his own decision to want to leave, possibly for a bigger club like us.

I admit, the questions are, do we need another midfielder? and is that an inflated price tag??

It does very much sound like a pearson type signing though...................... 22, English, and developing player wanting to prove himself.

Thoughts??

Maybe there's more to this than we think. Obviously this isn't necessarily reliable, it's from an article comment on Vital Hartlepool:

If you read various post and comments. I said at the beginning of the week Jones was going to leicester. if it doesn't happen it will be because of personal terms and how he does on his medical. Both clubs have agreed the deal. Down to Jones and Leicester to sort the deal now.

pure speculation, of course but maybe NP is looking for another mid because he is fed up chasing a striker and will mould n'Guessan into a striker's roll for this coming season....

who knows... *shrugs*

sounds like a decent signing but where are we going to put all these midfielders?

It would be good to have 4 decent centre midfielders, a position that we have been light in for the last few seasons.

If you look at our squad there are only so many players who are really 'first team' material. If we want to look towards promotion in the next two or three years (those who think this year we'll be pushing for the play-offs are dreaming) we need more than a first XI - we need back up and at the moment we are seriously lightweight around the park. The defence is solid although I'm still not convinced we have fantastic full back choices. Our midfield is good enough for mid table if you look at first choices but even then the wingers are all untested at this level and have waxed and wained in form at lower levels. if you consider that they may be in and out of form again that only leaves a solid centre mid and only in so far as we have oakley, wellens and the youngun'. with oakley potentplaying on the right as he did for part of move last season another midfielder would be fine although i would prefer that he was attack minded and able to move around midfield - not knowing that much about this lad i have no idea if he can but we could do with an attacking player of that type as well as the obligatory two strikers we are in need of.

I wouldn't yet assume anything about our midfield when related to Championship[ opposition. Oakley was there when we went down, remember, and #King didn't really have chance to make a meaninful impression.

Based on Peason's signings - and even the targets he's missed signing - it's perhaps fair to assume that Jones has some ability and potential.

Given that I see no problem with having another midfielder. Oakley might have coped on the right at times last season but Saturday gave clear enough indication that it's bad enough having the relatively pedestrian Howard and Fryatt leading our attack without having a medium paced veteran right winger as well.

We've got two fast, dangerous, right wingers as it is so Oakley will surely be competing for a central midfield place unless he's going to be accommodated whatever.

King has been the subject of transfer speculation but has still to prove himself fast enough and combative enough for top-end Championship football anyway.

Wellens is still raw and an injury to any of those three would leave us seriously limited for choice and I'm still not convinced that Clemence will be fit enough to complete a worthwhile shift.

So another midfielder would provide an option whatever happens.

Nicky Adams too has come good when people may have been questioning Pearson signing him last year. I think that we look lightweight in some positions and unless we go for loans we will need cover at left back and the Howard position. The impact that davies made last year shows that running at defences can pay dividends I would like someone in midfield like that. However, Adams may get a run in the team or on the bench sooner rather than later.

He would give us more options in midfield, but surely that area is not in need of cover as much as up front, in goal, left back and perhaps even right back. With money quite tight, I wouldn't have thought another centre mid would be a priority.

Interesting to see if any of our fans see this as being disloyal.....
