The Padster Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 LM Story Great Every stinkin couple of months this happens, kinda pisses me off that they come up with a flimsy insurance policy excuse. I mean surely the premiums only go up if they have accidents or break down a helluva lot, to which i've not read owt about any crashes lately and considering all Arriva's buses are relatively new (5 or so yrs old) they can't be going up considerably, right ? What do you guys think of this ?
Benji Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 It used to cost me £1.50 max to get to town before I had a car. Had to get the bus after a train trip from london which was the first in about 4 or 5 years, gave the guy £2 expecting change and he just looked at me like a weirdo before asking for a load more. Damn
James. Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 Every time I go back home to Birstall I'm shocked by having to pay over £2 for a single to Leicester. It only takes about 10 minutes! One thing London does well is buses. £1 on an Oyster Card for any single journey, any length. Makes Leicester look ridiculously expensive.
Babylon Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 It's an absolute joke, how many more excuses do they want to come out with. It's all about profit with these companies, the people at the top make their money and bonuses by shafting the users as much as possible.

It costs me about a fiver to get a return from my parent's house to the centre of Leicester if I'm at my parents!
Koke Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 My missus rides on First to get to work and about a year ago or so ish a weekly bus pass cost £7.50, and now it is £14.00 - It's mind boggling really.
Daggers Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 Putting up bus fares gives Jeremy Kyle wannabies less cash for alcohol or crack. This is a bad thing. The next step will be them over-burdening the job centres with job applications due to their new-found clarity and sense of purpose. What will all the immigrants do then with no work to attend to? Ridiculous state of affairs.
Bluefoxtim Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 Bastards. I've got a Student Annual bus pass which cost me about £260 so that saves a HELL OF A LOT! Until that comes through in the post, I'm going to have to spend nealr £4 per day on the bus. Prices didn't fall when petrol prices fell did they? Some National Express journeys cost less than Arriva tickets
Koke Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 Some National Express journeys cost less than Arriva tickets I think you can get to Nottingham for £3.50. But I haven't used National Express for a few years, so they might have upped their prices too.
Lillehamring Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 oh dear, oh dear, oh dear... i'm sure leicester isn't the only city suffering, although the bus companies there do seem to be taking the piss.... the worst thing about it though, is that the bus services in leicester are the worst i have ever experienced... i mean just the fact that you can't even get a transfer and there are very few cross town busses, so you end up just buying a day ticket, except when you have to change to the other company and then you have to buy two tickets anyway. last time i was getting a bus to glenfield i had the option of two buses, one was due in ten minutes one in 5, the ten minute one arrived at st.m's straight away, i didn't get on thinking that i'd just get the one that left in five minutes, which turned up right then, i got on and the other one left - 8 minutes early - inasne. absolutely rubbish.
MC Prussian Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 Public transport in Leicester is a joke. Outrageous prices, ridiculous service, crap fleet. And if you're lucky, you're getting served by a Spaniard.
StanSP Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 oh dear, oh dear, oh dear...i'm sure leicester isn't the only city suffering, although the bus companies there do seem to be taking the piss.... absolutely rubbish. Yep. Bedford's bus prices have risen sharply over past couple of years. My mate used to be able to get 60p single for a journey into town which took about 5-10 minutes. That's now up to £1.80. And for where I live, a single when we moved here (about 5 miles away from the main bus stop in Bedford) used to be about £1.50. That's now shot up to £2.20 in 4 and a half years.
Unit Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 if, on the odd occasion i get the bus to town, i always get pissed off with it, I just walk in now, a mile and a bit for 1.60, fook offff
Guest Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 It's an absolute joke, how many more excuses do they want to come out with. It's all about profit with these companies, the people at the top make their money and bonuses by shafting the users as much as possible. I wrote to them several times last year, and although I presented them with evidence of massive group profits, they said that the increases were necessary to cover rising fuel costs. I asked if they would put the prices back down when fuel costs did, and they did, but Arriva never answered that question. Fuel prices are back at the level that they were last year, so I was wondering if they would reel the old chestnut out, but fair play to them, finding rising insurance costs as an excuse wasn't something that I expected. It's still wrong, given that the only people who benefit from these massive profits are Arriva's shareholders. It is made worse by the fact that the council want more people off the roads. Privatising bus companies was a joke.

Privatising bus companies was a joke. i have a feeling that public transport here isn't privatised and it's still relatively pricey, the difference here is that it's exceptionally good. The secret is the Day Pass. except if you need to take two busses and one is arriva and one is first... also, i when i lived in woodgate and worked in narborough, i ended up walking to the railway station and then getting a train, cause i couldn't afford to get the bus to the station and back...the worst thing is it's dead easy in a car, but used to take me over an hour, no wonder people drive so much in leicester... now, in oslo, my day pass covers buses, trains, tube, trams and even boat routes and for what is probably less than you pay in leicester for a day pass on one single service.
Babylon Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 To be fair, for regular travellers like me prices aren't bad. I buy a 4 week ticket online every month. You save 10% buying it online so it comes down to £35.10 from £39. If you use the bus every day it equates to £1.25 a day, you can use it as many times as you want and anywhere in the midlands on arriva.

I bought a City pass last year where it was about £300 for a year anywhere in the city, 60 more for county aswell. Didn't use it much though

Yeah, like I say, the Day Pass.
Lillehamring Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 Yeah, like I say, the Day Pass. but you can only use it on one transport provider, so i'm not convinced.....
Guest Posted 29 August 2009 Posted 29 August 2009 Yeah, like I say, the Day Pass. But they're going up in price as well. They also only work on the one bus company, so it's useless if you live on an Arriva route, and your destination is on a First Leicester one.
Rodders Posted 29 August 2009 Posted 29 August 2009 They also only work on the one bus company, so it's useless if you live on an Arriva route, and your destination is on a First Leicester one. Not so. For £4/day, you can get a 'FlexiDay ticket', which you can use on First, Arriva, Centrebus, and the rest. Info on First Group website Compared to FirstDay (£3.50) and Arriva Local Day Saver (£3.60), this isn't bad value really. It didn't exist until recently (last year?) and they tend not to advertise it, but it does exist now! Think the council had something to do with it - odd, because it's a good, useful, albeit long overdue, idea.

It's almost as if they don't want people to know about it, and it certainly isn't contained on Arriva's website. <_< I still think that £4 a day is a lot of money. I could drive myself to anywhere in and around the city for less than that, and that's taking into account wear and tear, insurance etc. It's no real incentive to leave the car at home.
