Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 19 September 2009 Posted 19 September 2009 We should have gone out in the 2nd half and for the early stages just keep the ball. They should have scored from kick off and at that point we should have realised we needed to calm the game. But no typical City. I can't remember the last time we went 2-0 up then concede and still win away from home.
Tommeh Posted 19 September 2009 Posted 19 September 2009 Only Just picked myself up off the deck after celebrating Dannys goal. Mad times.

davieG Posted 19 September 2009 Posted 19 September 2009 Only Just picked myself up off the deck after celebrating Dannys goal. Mad times. You don't see many headed goals from that far out and that angle these days - massive and direction on it.
Tommeh Posted 19 September 2009 Posted 19 September 2009 One N! Gay. Oh and Bert's post on the last page!! I'd just about recovered from that knockbacknow you brought it up again
MC Prussian Posted 19 September 2009 Posted 19 September 2009 Nice to see familiar and new FT faces at the Oddfellows.

Bert Posted 19 September 2009 Posted 19 September 2009 Gay.Oh and Bert's post on the last page!! I'd just about recovered from that knockbacknow you brought it up again Sorry mate, but it was hilarious.
lou Posted 19 September 2009 Posted 19 September 2009 Cracking game.First half was our best 45 minutes for sometime, we were quality. The build up and finish for the 2nd goal was brilliant, can't wait to see it again on TV. Then the second half we started playing like retards. I cant wait to see it for the 1st fecking time! Bloody everytime I nip out I miss a goal
harpendenfox Posted 19 September 2009 Posted 19 September 2009 although delighted to be 2-0 up at the break it was apparent Watford couldn't be as bad again, having had just one off target shot in the first half. Sadly the big moment came when big Steve had his second headed chance, which he missed. I feel sure if it had gone to 3-0 the game wouldn't have ended 3-3. Unfortunately his fouls during the mayhem minutes meant we conceded possession too easily too. Gallagher looks like such a good footballer. Great balance. I don't think Nige quite knows his best team yet, which is fine. There's still time to tinker. I do feel it's worth starting Gallagher and Fryatt together up front to see how we go. I think the pair of them would scare a lot of defences. And with Tunch at the back for Brown we might not look as initimidating, but we'd keep possession better. Dany on the right, King in front of the defence, behind Wellens and Oakley, with Fryatt and Gallagher up front. Tunch for Brown. I don't for one minute think big Steve is finished, but lets experiment a little. This is surely the time to do it. We are better than we think we are, and could make the play-offs, without doubt, which is a pleasant surprise. I think West Brom will walk this league. The rest is all too play for.
Guest claude_leic Posted 19 September 2009 Posted 19 September 2009 Many positives to take from the game. Poor preformance from the fans, when we were 2 nil up it felt like we were losing. Most people were intent on sitting and be boring, i dont get why they dont just listen to it on the radio
TrickyTrev Posted 19 September 2009 Posted 19 September 2009 Would also like to know why NP seems to want to play Gallagher on the left? He came out and said he doesnt want to play on the left but he is still on there! Neilson looked good today as did Berner who would probably have got Man of the Match if not for Fryatt. They had 3 small chances to score and they did. They hit the bar too and we were lucky to draw. If we are to make the playoff the PNE is a must win game for me. Gallagher only played on the left after Wellens got injured. He was playing in behind the front two in the first half.

TrickyTrev Posted 19 September 2009 Posted 19 September 2009 Yeh I got it wrong but i remember saying from about the 47th minute we were getting over run and weren't prepared for the obvious fight back But we had two great chances in the first 5 minutes of the first half, both of which Howard fluffed. They were attacking with their full backs down the wings to try and double up on our unprotected full backs and when we had shape we looked like we could take advantage of how open they were playing. After Wellens went off we started lumping it out for throw in after throw in meaning that we were under constant pressure.

Agree with all of this. Especially about Howard, that 3rd would have killed it. I don't think he is finished he just needs a goal, I was a bit harsh earlier. Gallagher only played on the left after Wellens got injured. He was playing in behind the front two in the first half. He was on the left a lot too, but I would like to see him up front not in a midfield role.
lou Posted 19 September 2009 Posted 19 September 2009 Are these trips to the loo an age thing Touche! No I usually hold out til the end but as they only have 3 female loos in the entire stadium I thought Id best go early before the queues
Thracian Posted 19 September 2009 Posted 19 September 2009 Tis true I looked at the OS for the sub time and it said 62 - my apologies. Having said that we were still shambolic from the 46th minute, I really don't think Wellen's going off was the big difference. Neither do I. His absence became a factor but the main thing was our collective lack of focus when we came out for the second half and the fact that so many of our players faded so noticably having done decent jobs and put a lot of effort in during the first half. Our closing down, so much a feature in the first 45 minutes when we had almost total control, was almost totally lacking in the second half. It didn't help that we mentally tried to hold our lead second half rather than recognising why we'd come to be leading and maintaining the same intensity in closing down and in taking the game to the opposition. Helguson's introduction did make a difference. Firstly we didn't seem prepared for it and secondly we had people on the field whose energy was being sapped leaving them exposed and/or unable to offer the same impact and support as in the first half. Neilson, Berner, Fryatt, Howard and Gallagher all fell into that category and with individuals also making mistakes, something was always likely to give and it did. Trouble is, I'm afraid, we didn't replace either full-back when they were fading, Adams was no replacement for Wellens and there was no-one to make the runs of Fryatt/Gallagher when they were spent. It was only thanks to one moment of sheer brilliance that we saved a draw at the death. I hope we take advantage of that little slice of good fortune and learn from our mistakes immediately.
Granno Posted 19 September 2009 Posted 19 September 2009 Game of 2 halves anyone? The scoreline suggests a shit performance, but 3 goals away from home, extremely proud. The collapse, not so. But hey ho, that's life.
Salieri Posted 19 September 2009 Posted 19 September 2009 So how much of the second half demise was down to Wellens injury? Is he really that much of an important player that we are lost without him? What's the latest on his injury? I just want to establish whether it was complacency more than the injury that inspired Watfords fightback?

Losing Wellen's didn't help but you could see we'd turn off and were on the coach home with 3 points in our back pockets.

Losing Wellen's didn't help but you could see we'd turn off and were on the coach home with 3 points in our back pockets. I hope that is the case rather than being reliant on Wellens. Nige doesnt strike me as the sort who would allow his players to get complacent though. I'm sure, despite the equaliser, he had some choice words to say after the match.
Basingstoke Fox Posted 19 September 2009 Posted 19 September 2009 What a mixed game. Was happy but wary at half time, I was there and so I was politely asked not to jinx it. Unfortunately I did. Still, nice to get one over the other team in the last minute in some way. Our second goals was absolutely fantastic! Gallagher looks like he has alot of class to me and can only get better so I am looking forward to seeing him more, though I would like to see him play up front. Fair play to Watford for coming back. I still think that we should have won but I was happy when I came away from the game!

Well we might have found it difficult play without him but I can't see that conceding 3 goals like that was the result of his absence. I get the feeling others might disagree though.

I'm sure a couple of the defenders would have had been politely advised of what NP thought of our second half performance. It's Tunch time.
