Fosse Fox Posted 12 April 2010 Posted 12 April 2010 Chelsea Double then. AFIE is right, Spurs - Chels would have been a spectacle whereas this will be a walk over, still fair play to Pompey pleased for them. Hmmm... this might not be the foregone conclusion that you presume. All things being equal Chelsea should win BUT: 1) Chelsea are gunning for the title and may well have to play right to the wire to edge out MUFC and Arsenal. 2) Pompey have nothing to play for now and can rest key players - until someone can demonstrate clearly that Pompey's stars' appearances in the final means a net loss rather than a net gain I suspect that they will field a full strength eleven. 3) Chelsea were very poor for much of their semi against Villa who are at best a competent but rather dull and unimaginative side. Chelsea were also the net beneficiaries of some poor officiating (as were Pompey in their semi) 4) Pompey are a far better team than their current league position suggests. If it were not for their financial difficulties and the jiggery-pokery surrounding the club's ownership they could well have been a top half outfit this season. Their blend of pace and technique suggests that in a one off situation like a cup final they should be considered a top eight opponent or better. 5) Wembley bitch pitch - a great leveller. 6) The fans - pound for pound Pompey's are the best in The Prem by a carrot crunching mile. I think the players feel that they owe them one and will rise to the occasion. Verdict: 0-0 after extra time and Pompey to win the shoot out (with an heroic James save that books his ticket for South Africa).
Finnegan Posted 12 April 2010 Posted 12 April 2010 Only got wikipedia to go on - but that's still claiming that in the event of the cup winner qualifying for the Champs League, the cup runner up goes into the Europa - which would mean that if their finances weren't a stumbling block, Pompey would already have qualified? It does state that if both teams have qualified for the Champions League then the next lowest league placed team that hasn't qualified gets it instead.
Daggers Posted 12 April 2010 Posted 12 April 2010 It does state that if both teams have qualified for the Champions League then... ...the winner of the Championship playoff final gets it. And if it says this in Wiki then it'll happen. Book them and they will come and all that.

I don't know if it's already been posted but Pompey cannot play in Europe next year even if they qualify, they couldn't afford to apply for the UEFA club license.
Edmund Posted 12 April 2010 Posted 12 April 2010 I don't know if it's already been posted but Pompey cannot play in Europe next year even if they qualify, they couldn't afford to apply for the UEFA club license. You have to feel for the fans if that's the case. I'd be gutted if we won the cup and weren't in Europe the following season.

They are going to appeal for the license now but I can't see the football authorities granting the appeal, especially as the team likely to get the place will be Liverpool (6th place in the prem)
Filbert_Ross Posted 12 April 2010 Posted 12 April 2010 They are going to appeal for the license now but I can't see the football authorities granting the appeal, especially as the team likely to get the place will be Liverpool (6th place in the prem) 6th place will be in the Europa league anyway, it says in the paper that the Fa Cup europa place would go to the team in 8th spot. currently Everton
Sir Fynwy Posted 12 April 2010 Posted 12 April 2010 6th place will be in the Europa league anyway, it says in the paper that the Fa Cup europa place would go to the team in 8th spot. currently Everton I shouldn't rely on the BBC tables which show 5th as the only Europa cup slot, did seem strange
Filbert_Ross Posted 12 April 2010 Posted 12 April 2010 I shouldn't rely on the BBC tables which show 5th as the only Europa cup slot, did seem strange man.utd winning the league cup will have pushed the Europa slots down the league. Not sure why it goes down to 8th though
Brainy Posted 12 April 2010 Posted 12 April 2010 Did anybody notice how Portsmouth were playing towards the same end in the first half of ET as they were in the 2nd half of normal time? I didn't know that was allowed.
Fosse Boy Posted 14 May 2010 Posted 14 May 2010 Biggest day in English football tomorrow then! Come on Pompey! Abide with me!
C-man Posted 14 May 2010 Posted 14 May 2010 Biggest day in English football tomorrow then! Come on Pompey! Abide with me! Flat cap and pin badges at the ready?
Fosse Boy Posted 14 May 2010 Posted 14 May 2010 Flat cap and pin badges at the ready? Don't forget the all important rosette. I'm sure they'll all return for the first weekend in January.
Hitesh Posted 15 May 2010 Posted 15 May 2010 Gotta love FA Cup Final day - whichever team is playing!
Craig Posted 15 May 2010 Posted 15 May 2010 If there's any justice or romance left in football, Pompey will win.
Matt Posted 15 May 2010 Author Posted 15 May 2010 Was going to bet on Portsmouth at a massive 12/1 but thought it really will just be a waste of a pound or two. Really hope I don't regret having that thought though Nonetheless missing out on money or not - Come on Pompey!!! Not a huge Portsmouth fan but pretty much whoever was playing Chelsea i'd want to win. Bit annoyed it's on ITV and not Sky/BBC (I mean it's normally on a terrestrial channel aswell as Sky but not this year) we'll have to put up with the ITV Coverage <_< Ray Wilkins moaning about the state of the pitch already.
Mee Posted 15 May 2010 Posted 15 May 2010 Really want Pompey to win, gotta love the underdogs. Don't really want to bring the pitch up, but it looks awful
Joe. Posted 15 May 2010 Posted 15 May 2010 Going for 3-0 Chelsea myself. If it was a league match I'd go for 5 or 6, but Pompey seem to be able to pull something out the bag in the FA Cup. Hopefully it'll be closer than I think...
Tommeh Posted 15 May 2010 Posted 15 May 2010 Freddie Piquionne 1st at 16's Yeeeaahhhhh.. COME ON POMPEY! Should be us there today mind, fvcking welsh, next year IS our year
Edmund Posted 15 May 2010 Posted 15 May 2010 Can't see past Chelsea for this one. I really want Pompey to win though. Pompey 2-0
Corky Posted 15 May 2010 Posted 15 May 2010 Hope it's a good, open contest. Chelsea's desire for the double will come through though.
Matt Posted 15 May 2010 Author Posted 15 May 2010 Unlucky Portsmouth, gotta take those chances if you stand to have any chance though.
