Tomassi Posted 12 May 2005 Posted 12 May 2005 We know Maradona And Pele are probably the top two players to ever grace football.. but what about the rest of them?? Theres been great talents such as Sir Stanley Matthews, George Best, Paolo Maldini etc.. but i feel with the ageing dutchman Dennis Bergkamp.. he really had to be right up there!! In the past 9 years he has glittered the premiership with sublime skill.. together with superb techniques and quite amazing vision enabling him to create chances that bring so many other players into the game. If Arsenal do not offer him a new contract i feel next year we will miss this awesome specimen of an outstanding player.
Knighton Matt Posted 12 May 2005 Posted 12 May 2005 would it be arrogant to nominate myself? only joking! i'd honestly have to say ronaldinho is the most skillful player i have ever seen alongside maradona but whether he'll go on to become a great only time will tell. therefore i'd go for maradona but i think you're right tomassi bergkamp has had an amazing career and is a sensational footballer as anyone who witnessed that hat-trick at filbert street will i'm sure testify to.

Nationwider Posted 12 May 2005 Posted 12 May 2005 Getting back on topic, I totally agree about Bergkamp. I'd possibly have him above Zola, Keane and Cantona as the best foreign player to play in the Prem. It's difficult to compare players from different eras but in terms of defenders, Bobby Moore and Paulo Maldini seem to crop up again and again in people's Best Ever XI's. A back three of Moore, Maldini and Knighton Matt would take some beating.
Steven Posted 12 May 2005 Posted 12 May 2005 The greatest player ever was Franz Beckenbauer. Check his playing record or another look. In terms of Football there have been more skilfull players but none greater than the Kaiser and to me that includes Pele and George Best.

Nationwider Posted 12 May 2005 Posted 12 May 2005 Junior Lewis was good on his city debut ! 107411[/snapback] He was definitely the best player in the warm-up
FoxyPV Posted 6 April 2010 Posted 6 April 2010 After all the talk about Messi and his recent performances, can he be thought of as one of the best ever? I would argue that no one in the past 10 years or so can because of the changes to the slide tackle rule. The likes of Best, Pele, Maradonna, Cryuff etc actually had defenders trying to break their legs and they still did what they did. Best was routinely massacred in all his matches but was still a magician, Pele was kicked to pieces during '66 and in '70 but still performed well. Maradonna 1986. Enough said. Messi is an unbelievable talent but for me as well as he does, and some of it makes all superlatives redundant, he still has far greater protection from referees. Honourable mention for Zidane - legend

Messi is an unbelievable talent but for me as well as he does, and some of it makes all superlatives redundant, he still has far greater protection from referees. Honourable mention for Zidane - legend Why not? He is one of the best of this era; Pele, Maradona etc were some of the best of their era. You don't compare artists or musicians across eras either and ask 'who was the best of them all?'. Most would argue that football has 'changed' several times indicating different eras, so comparing the players across them is a bit pointless really. If you look at ability on the ball combined with pace and fitness, I would say Messi is possibly the best ever, but who's to say Maradona wouldn't have been as brilliant if he had been playing at the same time as Messi? For me Messi is without doubt one of the very best of this era, along with Zidane, Henry, Shevchenko, Ronaldinho, Raul, the Ronaldos, Rooney etc.
Fosse Fox Posted 7 April 2010 Posted 7 April 2010 Messi to me is like a cross between Kenny and Georgie but better than both. Technically brilliant, consumate dribbler and a clinical finisher. But 'best in the world by some distance' (Wenger)? You've got to remember that he's playing in a club that's at least as good as the AC Milan side of the late '80's and in spitting distance of the Real team of the late '50's. And the strange thing is that Messi is not in the Barca engine room - he's more of a useful outlet for the likes of Busquets, Xavi and the incomparable Iniesta (the greatest under rated talent in world football). Barca pass the ball more quickly, more often and more unselfishly than any other team on the planet and when they lose possession they strive to win it back pdq. The net beneficiary of all this is Messi who tends to drift in and out of games as the mood takes him.. Worth remembering that Barca are currently second to Ronaldo's lillywhites. Christiano has all the attributes that Messi has plus pace to burn and an amazing repertoire of tricks but he's currently sitting out the Champions League - hence the lack of attention. However, Ronaldo's genius is undermined by one thing - he doesn't have a brain.
Uncle Albert Posted 7 April 2010 Posted 7 April 2010 The players we have now playing are bloody unreal, Ronaldo, Messi, Rooney, Kaka, Higauin and soon add to that list Bojan and that little lad from Athletico, Aguerro. They are the top drawer players at the minute and we will probably add Bojan and Aguerro to that list in years to come but then look at the players you are leaving out of that list, the other players who can set the world alight. Xavi, Iniesta, Gerrard, Drogba, Torres, Arshavin, Fabregas, Ibrahimovic, Pato, Eto'o, Lampard, Henry, Ribery, Robben and probably more. This current generation of players is possibly the best ever.
maddog Posted 7 April 2010 Posted 7 April 2010 Messi has got to be the best footballer ever to play the game by a long long way.

Uncle Albert Posted 7 April 2010 Posted 7 April 2010 Messi has got to be the best footballer ever to play the game by a long long way. Why exactly?
Unit Posted 7 April 2010 Posted 7 April 2010 Cantona was always one of my favourite players as a kid, the sheer cockiness alone would earn my nomination
