lcfc_jme Posted 7 April 2010 Posted 7 April 2010 In terms of players I love watching when they're at the top of their game, leaving out the obvious in Messi and Ronaldo, I'd have to go with Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben and Steven Gerrard. All 3 are fcking brilliant players.

Nick Posted 7 April 2010 Posted 7 April 2010 Nah , it's the Classic XI squad on fifa What no Porter? No Sheehan? No Dudley? How can that squad be titled 'classic'?
Guest Bilo Posted 7 April 2010 Posted 7 April 2010 This squad could be seriously improved with a bit of Elvis Hammond.
Guest Posted 7 April 2010 Posted 7 April 2010 What no Porter? No Sheehan? No Dudley? How can that squad be titled 'classic'? This isn't a 'Thracian's Greatest Players Ever' thread
Fosse Boy Posted 7 April 2010 Posted 7 April 2010 I think it's difficult to compare the best players around today with some of those from the 70s, 80s and earlier. Especially for those of us not old enough to have seen the differences in style and physicality between the games of today and those of say fifty years ago. Anyway, I'll throw another name into the hat... Just Fontaine - 13 goals in the 1958 World Cup finals, a record which will most likely never be equalled.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 7 April 2010 Posted 7 April 2010 No one's mentioned Gerd Muller either.

Guest Bilo Posted 7 April 2010 Posted 7 April 2010 515 goals in 533 club games. 84 goals in 89 internationals. Part of the team that was the first non British team to win at Wembley. Part of an international team unbeaten for six years. An award for the best goal of the year named in his honour. Sometimes the facts say it all. Ferenc Puskas. Never mind your Argentinians, Brazilians, Germans or French. The best player for the greatest ever international team was Hungarian.

Hugo Sanchez Posted 7 April 2010 Posted 7 April 2010 Diego Maradona is by far the greatest player ever to play football. Messi will never win a world cup on his own.
Budweiser Posted 8 April 2010 Posted 8 April 2010 The players we have now playing are bloody unreal, Ronaldo, Messi, Rooney, Kaka, Higauin and soon add to that list Bojan and that little lad from Athletico, Aguerro. They are the top drawer players at the minute and we will probably add Bojan and Aguerro to that list in years to come but then look at the players you are leaving out of that list, the other players who can set the world alight. Xavi, Iniesta, Gerrard, Drogba, Torres, Arshavin, Fabregas, Ibrahimovic, Pato, Eto'o, Lampard, Henry, Ribery, Robben and probably more. This current generation of players is possibly the best ever. Higuain - Looks quality this season, but one good seaon can't call for him to be labelled 'unreal'. Bojan - Doesn't look like he will set the world on fire from what i've seen. Personally, think he's over-rated. Time will tell. Arshavin - Produces moments of magic, but easily fades against less than average teams. No way is he world class imo.
Edmund Posted 8 April 2010 Posted 8 April 2010 "How can you trust a man who walks around with grease on his head"- Commentator on 98/99 season review. Was that the season he scored a bullet against us? In fact he might have scored a few long rangers against us.

Finnegan Posted 8 April 2010 Posted 8 April 2010 Some of the names thrown around in this thread are ridiculous. Lampard, Ibra, Pato and Ribery? Sneijder? And I presume Van Hooijdonk was a joke? Don't get me wrong, they're all (with the exception of Pierre) world class players, brilliant players and some of the top level players playing now. Maybe. But amongst the greatest ever? Great is one of those words like genius that people throw about far too casually. I don't really care who wants to tell me I sound like a fanboy, none of these people come within miles of Messi and probably never will. The boy is an absolute enigma. I cringe whenever fans of the English game sincerely compare him to Rooney or Ronaldo in terms of ability and then try and give silly excuses like bigging up the standards of the Prem or whatever. Just watch the lad play. Rooney and Ronaldo will be remembered for all time as two excellent footballers of their generation. Messi will be idolized for decades.

I think the greatest player ever is Maradona but I would say Messi is the greatest player I have ever seen with my own eyes and seeing him play is for me the equivalent of that generation having the privilege to see Diego play the beautiful game.
Kilworthfox Posted 8 April 2010 Posted 8 April 2010 Messi has got to be the best footballer ever to play the game by a long long way. Diego Maradona - ignorance is not a defense Maddog!
