Watched it twice now:

Weale 7.5 a competent display in the main

Neilson 6.5 - Felt his work in the second half helped to keep our defensive unit ticking over, poor first half moments again display his limitations

Morrison 7.5 - Ace and dodgy at different moments

Hobbs 6 - Floundering again before team confidence seeped in. Injury nothwithstanding, the frailty of his self-belief should be a concern to Pearson

McGivern 7.5 - Has impressed me more playing in centre than he ever has at left-back

Oakley 7.5 - folding back to support across the middle came in very handy, the poor balls cancel out the excellent ones for me

Wellens 8 - as with King...

King 8 - Heartbeat of the side with the pair breaking up play and making loads of simple but intelligent balls

Dyer 8 - unsettled their right-hand side with some excellent running. The marks for his effort and pace are tempered by his lack of quality...although he could have benefited from a slightly less selfish/more aware Fryatt.

Fryatt 8.5 - One of the best all-round games I've seen him play but, and I know it's churlish, I just wish he'd share the ball when someone has a better chance on goal.

Howard 7.5 - Just like he did against Wednesday: Big Steve bruises and blusters, unsettles the oppo and is our best link player. He holds and passes with the best, and you have to wonder at those who moan because he doesn't play pass&run. It's not his game, it never was, he drops deep to allow midfielders to run in.

O'Neill - it doesn't seem fair to slight him, he was never meant to be playing and I doubt we'll see much from him.

All in all, the thing I prized most from that performance was the spirit which seemed absent at the start but came pulsing through the side - it was a performance that was greater than the sum of the parts, a game of grit and guile.

United may whine that they deserved a point, but they didn't...the stats say so: we controlled the game more and used it to forge more opportunities. In doing so we converted more chances than them, they got what they deserved because they fell away so much in the first half.

...and then there's this:

We played well

I don't think I can disagree too much, but I felt that Oakley was poor last night! I think he tried but was not his night.

Sheff United deserved what they got because of their 1st half "performance". There was little effort, they were 2nd best to everything and they were a beaten side going in at half time.

The injury to Hobbs was not even enough to raise their game even after a bundled goal which can be blamed on many opportunities not taken to clear the ball. They attacking efforts were almost predictable where as we were unpredictable as we could counter /lump or pass our way to create a chance. Makes good feelings for Donny. Hopefull we will carry on in the same style.

Also the passing before the 1st goal was some of the best football I have seen from Leicester in my 20 odd years watching them. :appl:

Thought it was a good performance against a very good attacking Sheffield United team. They looked dangerous on the counter and could have had a hatful of goals.

Watched the game on t.v

Weale 7.5 - Dealt with everything with minimal fuss, good distribution, was unlucky with the goal

Neilson 7 - Not his biggest fan, and he does lack speed and doesn't look clever when attacking, but defended well.

Hobbs 7 - Played alright 'till he got injured, hope it's not serious

Morrison 7.5 - One of our better players, looked good in the air, and a good finish for the goal

McGivern 7 - One of his better games, still looked shakey at times

Oakley 7.5 - Not a fan of him out on the right, but put some good balls in and made some good challenges, also, his corners are improving.

Wellens 8 - Mr Consistent, his passing is quality, he dictactes play.

King 8 - Best performance of the season, he was always there, breaking up play and linked up well with Wellens.

Dyer 9* - Outstanding, always a threat, could have maybe squared it to Fryatt when through, but other than that, no complaints.

Fryatt 8.5 - Looked a class act last night.

Howard 7.5 - Played ok, think this might be his last season at this level to be honest.

O'neil - 6 - Well out of his depth

And to think people near me were having a go at Neilson for passing backwards to Morrison instead of crossing. He kept possession, which in turn led to the shot, the corner and the goal.

Sometimes being patient and keeping the ball works well.

in truth I think we was lucky to win the game, 2nd half there was no closing down from our midfield, infact fryatt did more closing down then our midfielders. It was just waiting for them to get in our box before we put a tackle in, was like watching a bunch of statues at times, and at least 3 times our players let the ball go out when we were last to touch it.

on the penalty fryatt did dive but it happens is part of the game.

sky very clearly showed later on them getting a corner when our player didnt touch the ball and was right in front of the linesman, incredible decision. If a goal came from it I would have been livid.

Keeping the ball is always better than giving it away even if it is backwards or sideways.

the number of people that scream to get rid, hoof it, pass it forwards and then moan like fook when it goes astray.

The sheff u player put his foot to fryatts foot preventing him from continuing his run. What a nightmare that its 'part of the game', it should be a game of football.

There seems to be too many fans at times that are too annoyed when we keep the ball.

On TV

Weale 8 - Had a solid game and made some excellent saves. Reliable as clockwork.

Neilson 7 - One of his better performances I felt.

Morrison 8 - A real prospect for the future. A stinging shot that led to the corner for the goal.

Hobbs 7.5 - Reliable as ever when on the pitch. Would be a loss if out for any length of time.

McGivern 6.5 - Outpaced at times but decent in the tackle. Eventually learned to cope with reshuffle after shaky start.

Oakley 8 - Crossed and passed the ball brilliantly. Back to his best.

Wellens 8 - Desperately unlucky not to notch his first for City just before the break. Ran the midfield with a rod of iron.

King 8 - Further proved how wrong his naysayers are with an excellent performance. Stymied opposition attacks all evening and initiated our own. The Wellens-King partnership is growing in promise.

Dyer 9 - Man of the match for me. Pace, crossing and cutting inside played havoc with United's backline. They'll be glad to see the back of him.

Fryatt 8.5 - A very close second to Dyer in MOTM stakes. Dribbled, passed and caused problems all night long. Morgan must be walking like John Wayne today after being well and truly torn a new cornchute, was skinned numerous times by our man.

Howard 7.5 - Effectiveness undermined by a referee who penalised him for using his superior strength. Won flick-ons for Fryatt when not penalised so did his job well. I can imagine Morgan will be pleased he won't have to face Steve again this season.

SUBS

O'Neill 6 - Looked more out of his depth than Stuart Lubbock to start with but got into his stride eventually. For an 18 year old playing out of position on his first team debut, it would be unfair to criticise him too harshly.

Gallagher NA - No time to make an impact.

I agree, he was a bit selfish, although I suppose you could flip it over positively and say he's just very confident and believes in his own ability to score. :dunno:

There are so many times when I wish he'd pass (for example, passing to Dyer at one particular moment yesterday would have all but guaranteed a third goal), and this is definitely the weakest part of his game. In fairness though, most strikers wouldn't pass at a sniff of goal, but Fryatt's just perhaps a bit worse than we'd like him to be.

That said, I'm just happy to see a Fryatt with confidence in our side. He's come on leaps and bounds since the dark era of 05-07, something which I can quite honestly say I never thought would happen. He's now fastly becoming a very good Championship striker and scoring goals, so if he has to be greedy now and again then so be it.

Posted
maybe it is purely because we have switched to 4-4-2 and brought back Dyer.

Yes he's slow, yes he should score more, yes he should have been taken off after 60-65 minutes, but he should definitely start against Donny and keep his place in the team when Waghorn is back until we can find a way to play more effectively without him than with him.

Bear in mind that he didn't start for about 10 games before Wednesday so is probably not match fit, and we have no reserve team for him to keep sharp, I expect he will look sharper if he starts the next few games.

i don't have a problem with him starting, but i'd rather it were kermo, as he's proved that anything howard can do, he can do... there has to be a point where we start taking some risks and start thinking about the future - if this season is about consolidation and building for the future, why do we seem to be sneaking into this plan to try to do what derby did when they went up.

and as far as looking sharper, i seem to remember that when he had a run of games at the start of the season he actually got worse the more he played until everyone (not just me) was calling for him to hang up his boots.....

Anyway....

regarding fryatt's dive - how come players do that week in week out, and the first time - ever - a leicester play makes a meal of something, it becomes a national disgrace - besides, there was contact.

Kermorgant's proved absolutely nothing, he's not even scored for us yet. If he was as good as everyone on here makes out, he'd be starting games regularly. Howard's come in and gave us a focal point, he knows the English game inside out and he knows how to play against Championship defenders. Yes he's old and hasn't got many years left in the game, but if he's fit and playing well then there's no problem. Fryatt looks a better player with Howard as his foil.

This!

Yes everybodys seen the videos of Kermo's overhead kicks. Hes done nothing yet, besides a bullet header at Scunny. Everyone seems obsessed in him!

Weale - 7. Some good saves, including one in particular when left exposed. Looked quite shaky with crosses in a crowded area.

Neilson - 7. Did little wrong yesterday I felt, first 5 aside. Looked quite solid from what I saw (on TV  ).

Hobbs - 7.5. Extremely confident performance, dominated in the air and took charge of his back-line well. Shame to see him go off, unnerved us no end.

Morrison - 8. Very, very good. Booming shot, good header to score, assured and confident at the back. Heroic second half.

McGivern - 6.5. Abysmal at left-back, which is supposedly where he plays. Moved the centre-half in the second half and actually looked like a defender playing there.

Oakley - 7. Good touches, got involved going forward and keeping the ball, tracked back well and looked to make things happen.

Wellens - 8. Controlled most things in the midfield, drove us forward and got stuck in as well. Sure it was him that crashed the effort off the bar before half-time as well. Big fan.

King - 7.5. Puts in more tackles than people care to remember, keeps the ball well and always gets things moving. Does a lot of the dirty work in the middle which goes unnoticed but it absolutely vital to a team.

Dyer - 8. Finally looked good again. Pace to burn, ran at defenders, kept them guessing and could have scored. Real handful for once, always an outlet. Needs to keep that level of performance.

Howard - 7. Crunched their right back early on (who was looking awesome at that point it has to be said), put himself about, got physical and for me won the aerial battle against Morgan. Made Fryatt's job easier, and at the minute, looks Fryatt's best partner.

Fryatt - 9. Absolutely magnificent. By far and away the best I've seen him play. Sheffield United just couldn't touch him. Showed his skill and intelligence by tangling defenders up. Wish he'd pass a bit more when people are better placed than him, but if he'd done that yesterday maybe he wouldn't have won the penalty? Top performance from the lad.

Subs:

O'Neill - 5. Ok, he's a young kid and was playing left-back as opposed to right-back where he prefers, but he looked extremely poor. But for one challenge and burst forward, he was beaten every single time by the Sheffield United right-winger and looked as though he had no idea how to play full-back at all (his age is not an excuse - he'll have played there before and should at least have had some idea of what to do). Not as promising as he's been made out to be based on that performance.

Gally - N/A.

Wasn't a dive for me

I am with the BBC when they describe it as a:

'Fryatt fired in his 11th goal of the season when he sent Bunn the wrong way from the penalty spot in the 35th minute following a clumsy challenge on him by Nick Montgomery.'

If you look at the replay Montgomery actually took Fryatts furthest foot away from him, takling Fryatt across his body, Fryatt would have had to hurdle the challenge to go on and imo would been an idiot to do so.

I'm not going to blame him if he is going to make the most of a sloppy challenge.

At the match

Weale 7.5 - Solid as usual, nothing much he could have done with the goal tbh. Some great catches from crosses but at other times felt a bit uneasy when punching.

Nielsen 6 Average, but imo will always be shit.

Morrison 8.5 - Excellent. Fantastic in the air, fast and unbelievable great technique. Morrison and Hobbs seems the way forward. I've been crying out for this guy to be given a chance and he didn't disappoint.

Hobbs 8 - Missing him showed just how much we need him.

McGivern 3 - Makes me shit myself. Absolute crap. No positional sense whatsoever. Bad decision by Pearson to stick him at CB.

Oakley 8 - Had a good game, got involved and some good corners. Still, needs to stay wider though.

Wellens 8.5 - One of his best performances so far. He even had a couple of shots and was unlucky not to score. Was a real battler.

King 8 Solid performance as usual. Turning into a quality player.

Dyer 10 - FANTASTIC. He showed everything about the Lloyd Dyer that we love. He ran at players, scared the shit out of them, didn't shy away and worked like a horse for the full 90 minutes. Well done Lloydy.

Fryatt 7.5 - Good game, good dive, good penalty. Thanks.

Howard 8 - Battled and bossed Morgan the dirty twat around. Good on Stevie. He also got into the box 3/4 times for crosses which is something we haven't seen for a long time.

O'Neill 5 He showed some decent touches aswell as being strong in the air, but nevertheless got done over a couple of times. Not helped obviously when you've got an albino donkey playing next to you. And tbf to O'Neill, he is a right-back.

Pearson 6 - Why did he bother putting Berner on the bench if he wasn't prepared to bring him on? Should have at least put Howard at centre-half. First half though, everything was spot on.

Sheff U fans - 0 - Crap.

He was, he did - as they were going from the changing room to the pitch Berner complained of pain and so plans were changed at the 11th hour.

I thought it was Berner doing a warm-up at half time.

Was shocked when I saw O'Neill come on. This explains that.

Theres all that, and alot of times this season he's been unoticable. btw, are you King's dad?

Ha ha, no I'm not his Dad! I just appreciate that style of play. Probably because I have no pace and can't run with the ball so that is how I play football. I'm starting to show the Spanish how to play English football, none of this step over, dancing round the ball flashy shite, play it simple get in space and keep the ball moving. I only wish I could shoot like King.
