What do you want to happen to Football?

... to Leicester City in particular and Football in general?

I know a lot of people on here despair about the state of football, and seeing as the Premiership isn't exactly improving, what would you like to see change?

If you could wish for 3 things to happen to our game and club in the next few years, what would they be?

It can be as broad as you wish (for example debt regulation) or something as simple as 'beat Forest, Derby and Cov in the return fixtures this season'.

I'll start it off:

... to Leicester City

1. Our debts to be cleared and the club become self sufficient even if it means Championship football.

2. Our away support to continue to grow.

3. When You're Smiling to be sung slowly.

... to Football in general

1. Transfer embargos for teams whose debt increases every season.

2. A strict and properly regulated 'fit and proper person' test for potential new owners/investors.

3. FA Cup games free for season ticket holders everywhere to promote the competition again.

Posted

... to Leicester City

1. Consistency and passion shown in every game. If they show it, and we lose, then fair enough.

2. No goal music.

3. Debts to be wiped

... to Football in general

1. Video technology

2. Salary caps.

3. Similar to what they do in Italy (I think?), can't sign anyone under a certain age. Saves the huge clubs poaching the best youngsters. (someone might want to clear this up :) )

That's just what I can think of at the moment. Might think of more brighter ideas later.

Yeah I think I could have thought of about thirty for each!

To Leicester City

1. An investor with the money and will to invest funds to get us to the Premiership and keep us there.

2. Free travel to away games a la Aston Villa

3. Improved facilities at the Walkers

To the game

1. Safe standing to be introduced

2. Wage cap

3. Limit on amount of new players brought in over course of a season

Posted

I honestly never thought I'd see the day when I would back a wage cap but the way the games gone I would welcome nothing more, along with other silly ideas that I would never of backed 10 years ago like drafting caps on transfer budgets limits on forigen players etc.

The one thing I'd want from Leicester City is for them to give me the desire to go and watch them again.

To City...

1. Have a secure financial future.

2. Win the FA Cup.

3. Every game, home and away, win or lose, rain or shine, to be like Continental SK1 v Swansea.

To football...

1. Safe standing areas to be introduced.

2. Police/stewards/media/commercial entities to stop undermining the sport and those who follow it.

3. Have the game at all levels run by people who aren't corrupt morons (unrealistic, but I can dream).

To Leicester City-

1. Get rid of Goal Music and family-orientated atmosphere. By all means have families but don't over-prioritise them.

2. Win a major cup (Carling or Fa). Would love a return to Europe.

3. Build a team for the long-term and become debt-free.

To football-

1. Safe standing introduced.

2. Seedings scrapped in cup competitions, make it more open from the start.

3. Clubs taking every competition seriously.

I've needed 4.

LCFC:

The team and club to consolidate financially and if it's in this division so be it.

To go back to Stoke in the Cup or even league if they go down/we go up and fu cking destroy the tinpot cu nts.

For For Pearson to be given time and I mean a good few years to sort us out. Players like Hobbs, Fryatt and King to stay a good number of years and become the first real fans players since Elliott, Izzett and Heskey.

For our fans to chill the fu ck out, enjoy the day no matter what and return to the away support we had last year.

Football:

Safe Standing areas to introduced to all grounds in all divisions.

For Richard Scudamor and the Premier League to fall flat on it's arse.

For Sky's monoply of our game to be controlled and ended.

Oh and for MK Dons to die and be replaced in the league by AFC Wimbledon.

... to Leicester City

1. Attempt to gain some soul of English football back.

2. Good support with a hardcore which would be unique in adopting an European-style feel.

3. Honest club to fan communication

... to Football in general

1. Midweek games to be within at least 80 miles of away side's location.

2. Two league games televised a weekend. Rest Saturday 3pm.

3. League Cup to become 'regionalised' and 'seeded'

4. Honest investment.

3. League Cup to become 'regionalised' and 'seeded'

In terms of regionalising it, would it not just be a larger scale JP Trophy?

It's already seeded to some extent isn't it? Don't agree with seeding but I'd certainly be infavour of regionalisation. Could get some cracking local derbies every year.

AFIE I'm surprised you've not mentioned these to be brought back :D

:D

All footballers caught sporting a knickerbocker which reveals the knee should be fined ten shillings and fourpence.

Brylcreem should be compulsory for all Inside Lefts.

Cigarette Cards should be brought back.

Those saucy Hungarians and their frightful trickery should be banned from the game. Rubes.

... to Leicester City

1. Debt free.

2. Beat Stoke at the Britannia in a Cup game, last minute.

3. Emile Heskey to one day return.

... to Football in general

1. A selling age - so teams the bigger teams cannot go and steal 15/16 year olds with big money.

2. Man City to rot and that Shaikh guy to die.

3. The Champions League to return to a straight knockout competition, like when it was the European Cup.

Interesting. How would it work?

As per the topic of this thread, we had a conversation at work about this. I happened to be the person who wanted the most change (unsurprisingly I watch the most live football out of anyone at work).

I suggested that the league fixtures be played over weekends and advantage taken of bank holidays etc. to position games then. Even play games on international weekends - the only way you can wiggle out of not playing is by proving that 5 or more of your players have played 65% of your games across the season (bar injury). I actually worked this one out based on the scheduling of this season and about 3 programmes of league fixtures ended up in the midweek. These three programmes would have to be fixtures which involved only a 80 mile trip for the away team, this was to ensure fans were able to get there and then called-off games will also have to be on mid-weeks but encouragement of rescheduling weekend games to reduce distances over the midweek. Finally, derby games (45 miles or less) must stay on Saturdays!

FA Cup...I suggested a Champions League place for the winners and if the winners already have a spot then it goes as per the league. If a team like Portsmouth got there, they would have to played one of the 'Champions' qualifiers which makes it a bit more difficult.

Further suggestions were a wage cap (but would have to be thought very carefully) and capped ticket prices for 30% of the stadium plus 10% of the away support....these would be staggered for divisional status.

Finally League Cup...

It would be different for JPT, you would not be restricted to just one regional group. The regions would change upon every draw. Up until the last round of 16, the regions of North, South and Midlands would be further sub-divided into North/South or West/East. From round of 16, it goes North and South with sub-divisions and then quarter-finals, North and South with no divisions. This is because I am worried about lop-sided sections basically with too many or too little bigger sides.

Seeding - the first two rounds would be seeded thus ensuring the smaller teams have the big boys at their ground - then open draws within the divisions . My seeding also refers to the German Cup, the lower positioned side have the venue regardless of who comes out of the hat first.

Format - First Round, first midweek of August before the league schedule even starts.....48 teams from League 1 and 2, 8 teams from Championship (lowest positioned on previous season). Draw would be seeded as per previous season league position.

Second Round, mid-August..Premiership teams and rest of Championship join for 32 ties involving 64 teams.

And so on and so on....

The League Cup is a midweek competition which needs more fans through the gate to avoid clubs losing money, it needs locality to ensure more away fans and more attraction. So that's my solution more derbies (the Police would hate it)

This morning I have worked out a draw etc. and based on this weekend results I'll have the next round done and we'll see how it goes (ultimately whether it works with it's intention). Admittedly, the one negative is that Swindon ended up in the Midlands section.

First Round

North-West

Accrington Stanley v Tranmere Rovers

Macclesfield Town v Oldham Athletic

Morecambe v Carlisle United

Rochdale v Stockport County

Bury v Carlisle United

North-East

Grimsby Town v Barnsley

Rotherham United v Leeds United

Bradford City v Huddersfield Town

Darlington v Hartlepool United

South-West

Torquay United v Plymouth Arygle

Bournemouth v Southampton

Aldershot v Bristol Rovers

Wycombe Wanderers v Yeovil Town

Exeter City v Brighton & Hove Albion

South-East

Barnet v Charlton Athletic

Dagenham & Redbridge v Norwich City

Gillingham v Millwall

Brentford v Southend United

Leyton Orient v Colchester United

Midlands-North

Burton Albion v Nottingham Forest

Notts County v Derby County

Port Vale v S****horpe United

Lincoln City v Hereford United

Chesterfield v Shrewsbury Town

Midlands-South

Cheltenham Town v Coventry City

Swindon Town v Leicester City

Northampton Town v Peterborough United

Walsall v Milton Keynes Dons

- Some decent derbies in there!

Football in general:

1. One televised Premier League game, and one televised Football League game per week. All other games to be played at 3pm on Saturday.

2. Total wage bill cap - a la rugby union; a salary cap may work, but if based on individual players richer clubs will still be able to buy more players. If the total wage bill is capped, clubs have to decide whether to blow it on one star, or look for consistency.

3. Restrictions on foreign players - when restrictions were lifted, our youngsters were supposed to benefit, and we would see an improvement in the national squad. Since then, the national side has failed to qualify for more major tournaments than before, and whilst we have qualified for this year's World Cup, I am not optimistic about our chances. Young talent does not break into the Premier League that often, as clubs buy in experienced and cheaper players from abroad. It all boils down to money.

4. Education and vocational training for players - there is far too much money in the game, and most of it is going to players and agents. I love football, but I don't see why footballers should expect to retire in their mid thirties and never have to do anything ever again. Yes, some go into coaching and management, but not all players do. Footballers need to realise and understand the sacrifices that fans make in following clubs. I am sure that there would be more respect from players if they knew that at the end of their career, they could be working alongside the very same fans who chanted their names. It used to happen, and I see no reason why it shouldn't now.

5. Abolish seedings - under the pretence of "giving smaller clubs the chance to play bigger clubs", it is just making life easier for the big clubs. The randomness of a proper unseeded draw is what the cups are about.

6. Abolish League systems for cup competitions - If the so-called big whatever want a European Super League, form one. If you haven't got the support or the balls to do it, then go back to a proper knockout cup format. That should stop the likes of Arsey Wenger banging on about playing too many games....

7. Safe standing - it can be done, and fans should be given the chance to sit or stand, because they have no choice either way, certainly for those who want to sit down whilst following their team away from home.

That's it for now.

Football was better when everyone smoked, wore sheepskin coats and had dollybirds draped over their Ford Fiestas.

I propose that in order to improve the game:

  1. Everyone has to have a perm and/or facial hair growth
  2. All shirts to be made of 100% cotton
  3. Games to go ahead regardless of weather conditions
  4. Reintroduction of rattles, caps and crates of brown ale
  5. Small children to be lifted onto the edge of the pitch
  6. Salaries limited to £250 p/w with a £50 brown envelope bonus for those who tried
  7. Terracing
  8. Turnstyle payments
  9. Jimmy Rimmer to give sandcastle building lessons to all keepers
  10. Scrap the transfer windows, open up transfers over the entire season
