Palace Post Match

It's not about them winning them Shane, they could draw some too. Preston, Cov, Us, Boro are all tough games, and Reading and Doncaster are hardly pushovers. Clearly I'm being optimistic, and I don't think we'll do it but just saying.

Playoffs is more than enough for me. :D

Great to get the points, but we didn't play that well, Palace look a truly awful side and there seemed to be period of five minutes at a time where no palace player even attempted a tackle. Didn't see the sending off but interesting to note Palace fans didn't seem to be complaining. They could have been asleep at the time of course, they were for most of the game.

I don't get it.....

I assume he's referring to Coventry's match tonight?

They were 1-0 up at their place... and we'll win on aggregate, i think he means

Yeah tonight they were 1-0 up against Cardiff and ended up losing 2-1. In comparison to us where we kept our lead.

Has nothing to do with our match at the Ricoh lol.

Just got back from Selhurst, took an hour and a half to get to my flat in north London....

Anyway, we were dominant without being ludicrously brilliant. Special mentions to Weale, Nobby, Waggers (obviously) and King, but the lads all played their part. Fantastic result though.

Oh and the penalty for the red (some people in the crows WERE asking) couldn't have been given regardless as the ref had already signalled for the throw in and couldn't go back and change his mind to award the pen. No idea what the sending off was for mind, I though it was Morrison in trouble at first... And anyway, I don't even think it was in the area? But I don't know having not seen anything...

Palace fans were shit except for that bloody drum and the 'tune' that accompanied it, the rest of the ground was silent. Our support was good, first 20 rows were sitting and mostly silent, but the other 30/40 rows were all standing and singing to an extent, great night out!

Very solid performance for the first hour but the last half hour was very poor. We were way too negative and regressed from being in total control to clinging on.

Still, what as has been said earlier in the thread, what an unbelievable season and the play-offs looking very likely! Congrats to the team on another 3 points.

And on another note, those Palace kids in the corner were fantastic. Given what their club is going through their support was an absolute credit.

Another 3 points, looking up and keeping the momentum going.

Smashing.

Just got back to Eastbourne.

Professional performance to get the three points that were quite clearly full deserved. The first half was a demonstration of some tidy football played by us, despite Palace's frustrating attempts to niggle their way to stopping us to that. The red card served them right on that one.

Good performances from all involved, although I thought our front three were particularly good on the night, along with Solano who slotted in at right back superbly. Hobbs and Morrison were again solid in defence, whlst Berner was always there to get forward whenever possible. Right place, right time for his goal.

It was disappointing to see us drop the pace at 1-0 because I think Palace were certainly there for the taking, and that's where things started to go slightly pear-shaped on the football front. The passing became at times wayward, and a few players didn't seem to really know whether to attack and go for goal or simply keep the ball in defence.

Either way we got what we fully deserved and it's a win which puts us in a healthy position right now. Got a £20 fine for an expired railcard on the way up which pretty much screwed up my other train plans, but jibbing four barriers was a good effort from then on. Cost me much more than I'd hoped today but seeing Leicester win away really is priceless...

West Brom need about 4 wins and we cant catch them so I would rule that out, but I would much rather finish 3rd or 4th then 5th and 6th, with the home advantage.

Saying that I don't think it really matters.

It doesn't matter if you finish 3rd or 6th, what matters usually is the end of season form you bring into the playoffs. Hopefully we haven't peaked too soon in case we get there...

Damn that rash booking of a dirty weekend away on the 21st May

West Brom could still drop all of their remaining games; never mind those naysayers posting above me.

Considering that both Forest and Swansea are very strong sides, I'd much rather finish 3rd and play Cardiff/Blunts/Blackpool/Whoever and plus have the second leg at home. That said, play-off is lottery so whoever we face we have to be on top of our game.

Not that getting a play-off spot is a foregone conclusion yet. ;)

Berner and Solano were both quality tonight, it should have never been as nerve racking as it was at the end because we were comfortable for the vast majority of the game.

What a ridiculous journey it is, I'm knackered. lol

Just fot home. Good, soild win. Pleased.

Shocked how some of our fans got on the lads' backs so quickly when we were under a bit of pressure in the last twenty though.

Didnt realise Donny had sneaked up to 8th, makes our win up there look very good.

Cov now tenth, by Sunday evening they could be 13/14th, where they belong!

Let's not get carried away.

As good as our result was last night it would be a major setback to not get at least a point against Coventry on Sunday.

This is a Coventry side that had taken 10 points from 12 prior to last nights result which they lost thanks to a last minute penalty.

Great win, other results in our favour and we go fourth, fooking brilliant.

We owned the first hour, neat, tidy football, only our lack of firepower stopped us getting 2 or 3. This kind of smash, grab and hold is becoming a bit of a City trademark under Pearson...

Everyone played well, special mention for Solano and Hobbs at the back who were excellent and both (yes, Hobbs as well) brought the ball out of defence with some purpose, not perfect by any means but a great improvement on our traditional 'hoof'.

The midfield got up and down as a unit, makes a big difference and the forwards were lively, still not enough presence in the box though. Waghorn works hard trying to lead the line but to my mind he is better as a second striker or coming inside from the right, this lack of a cutting edge cost us 2-3 goals last night.

Did not see the red card incident as such, but Palace were a bit niggly from the off and a few of the tackles were awful so I'm pleased someone got a red, as a team they deserved it. Waghorn's card was a joke, a blatent dive by the Palace player (Butterfield?) after negligible contact, should be ashamed of himself!

Last half hour was a different game, King and particularly Wellens sat way too deep and as they barely got forward our passing game fell to pieces as we conceded the initiative to the 10 men. With no midfield presence going forward our passes out of defense got longer and longer and less and less accurate giving Palace all the possession they could possible want... :sweating:

Fortunately our back 5 were pretty decent and we held out for a win, should have been a lot more comfortable.

When I get a bit more time I will do a player by player evaluation for those not at the game...

Huge credit to Pearson for switching from his 442 to this 433 system. At times last night our movement was superb. At one point I remember Dyer tracking back just in front of Solano at right back. Then a moment later he was on the left. I'm not saying we're good enough to play at a higher level, but this fluidity means we at least look like we're working towards it. As many posters have said we looked several classes better than Palace for much of the game. I wonder if Howard came on because he's told Nige he fancies a move to Hudders to get some game time, and Nige has reassured him he will get plenty of game time here. Certainly his arrival seemed to signal our retreat and led to a twitchy ending.

But all in all so many positives from last night. I wouldn't half be pleased if we could prise Charlie Adam from Blackpool to take Oakers place over the summer. King and Wellens laying the foundations, Adam streaming forward to link with our front three. Tasty.

Happy days indeed. I reckon 5 wins and 1 draw from our final 10 games will make us play off certainties. And even that requires one of the chasing pack to win 8 or their remaining 9 games. May is not the month to take a quick overseas holiday.

Absolutely buzzing now for the Coventry game, haven't been for such a long time, let's hope it's worth it!

If we did make it to the playoff finals, its in the middle of my final uni exams so I'd miss them! Gutted doesn't quite describe it!

You can always re-take exams! :scarf:

This was my fear when I heard he was coming on, shame Vaughn was out thought we could of traded him for Waggers and kept the pace up top to fininsh em off. Oh well, can't complain it's still 3 points and pushes us up a place :D
