MikeyT Posted 18 May 2010 Posted 18 May 2010 it's Ricky Sappleton all over again... What's happened to him?
fosseman Posted 18 May 2010 Posted 18 May 2010 it's Ricky Sappleton all over again... I think you might be right.
The Doctor Posted 18 May 2010 Posted 18 May 2010 What's happened to him? he was released. On an aside did he ever actually play a match?
Fez of Mahrez Posted 18 May 2010 Posted 18 May 2010 This sort of thing is great news. I can understand why people denigrate the youth setup when they perform so well but very few players get brought through into the first team. But when you spend a fair bit of time down there watching the youth sides play, you start to separate things out a bit and the first team isn't the be-all and end-all. Like the Saturday before last when our academy team played Forest in the FA Youth Premier League semi-final. They'd gone all of the league season unbeaten and they played 120 minutes and penalties and lost. They were absolutely gutted, completely shattered by it. The youth setup is its own little world that some people maybe don't realise. It's tough. You can have a good season and be one of the key players for a successful team and then suddenly get released and it's all over. It happened to Tom Tejan-Sie in 2007, who was on the bench for Dagenham in their play-off game on Sunday, and it's just happened to Robbie Burns who played well against Forest. It's fantastic that kids want to join us though. Andy King was rejected by Chelsea, remember, and we managed to attract him to our excellent youth setup. Now, over 100 games at first-team level, nearly 25 goals, a crucial member of the team. Hopefully the likes of Tom Parkes and Elliott Chamberlain will do the same soon, although it's a massive step to take. Kee and Sappleton didn't make it. Mattock and Gradel did but never properly convinced a lot of people before moving on. When you watch the youth team, it's fascinating to see the paths that the players' careers take. This season, we've had a really tight-knit core squad at under-18 level and, thankfully, a lot of them will move into the reserves for next season. Some will stay with the 18s and take on a bigger role next year, a bit like Hobbs has done at first team level going from the young loan understudy to winning player of the year awards. One thing's for sure - this lad could not ask for better coaches and a better environment in which to learn how to become a professional footballer than under Rudkin, Beaglehole and their staff at Belvoir Drive.
Fosse Boy Posted 18 May 2010 Posted 18 May 2010 Guessing the fact he opted for us is probably down to Steve Beaglehole's connection with the Northern Ireland youth setup?
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 18 May 2010 Posted 18 May 2010 it's Ricky Sappleton all over again... First thing I thought of, very similar headlines when he signed.
dave_the_fox Posted 18 May 2010 Posted 18 May 2010 First thing I thought of, very similar headlines when he signed. Everyone seems to be forgetting that he was part of Mad Dogs signings.........
samjohnson Posted 18 May 2010 Posted 18 May 2010 Leicester City have beaten Arsenal to the signing of a top teenage prospect. Centre-back Joe Jones has decided to join City ahead of the Gunners because he feels he will get more opportunities at the Walkers Stadium. The 16-year-old, who has been capped at under-15 level for Northern Ireland, has come through the youth ranks at Kingstonian, Wangas in Tolworth and Sutton United, and had been training with Arsenal, but has decided to join City instead. After initially being told he would not be retained, Jones produced some excellent performances to prompt Arsenal academy head coaches Liam Brady and David Court to have a rethink and offer him a two-year scholarship. Click here for more Liverpool also showed an interest, but the teenager opted for City because of the club’s reputation for developing young talent. “Joe is one of a number of under-16 players who I am delighted to say will be joining us for pre-season,” said City academy manager Jon Rudkin. “He is a player we have been looking at for some time and we have seen him play for Northern Ireland. “He has identified there are opportunities at Leicester, as have a number of other boys.” City finished top of their academy league last season after going through their entire league programme unbeaten and only tasted defeat on one occasion, in the FA Youth Cup at home to Liverpool. City’s proposed pre-season friendly at Burton Albion has been called off. The game was provisionally pencilled in to take place at the Pirelli Stadium for June 10 but has now been cancelled. FoxyPV Posted 18 May 2010 Posted 18 May 2010 The whole Chamakh saga was just a cover up then as he is really on his way to the Walkers (he didn't want to hurt Arsenal fans' feeling again after this loss) I think it's a good thing that young players want to sign for us. It gives us the opportunity to develop our own talent rather than relying on loans and signings. Anyway we could get a generation similar to the one that came through at Old Trafford (Giggs etc) - just a thought
Ozwin Posted 18 May 2010 Posted 18 May 2010 Joe Jones and Jorrin John. We sure do love our J name players.
Corky Posted 18 May 2010 Posted 18 May 2010 Joe Jones and Jorrin John. We sure do love our J name players. John Jensen is coming out of retirement to sign as well.
shiv Posted 18 May 2010 Posted 18 May 2010 When it says he chose Leicester over Arsenal, it means he chose the Leicester Youth Team over the Arsenal Youth Team because he probably feels he won't get as many games in the Arsenal Youth Team. So I wouldn't get too excited, although it is great to see us signing youngsters, hopefully he'll turn out to be a great prospect.
iancognito Posted 18 May 2010 Posted 18 May 2010 Not just Sapp but that Harry Worley kid too. The new John Terry, which has all sorts of other meanings these days.

surrifox Posted 20 May 2010 Posted 20 May 2010 John Jensen is coming out of retirement to sign as well. just so long as Jason Jarrett doesn't
Dan Posted 20 May 2010 Posted 20 May 2010 Jermaine Johnson anyone? This move just proves how far we've come to be honest.
acooling08 Posted 20 May 2010 Posted 20 May 2010 Don't need any defenders especially if we get Bruce.
Guest Posted 20 May 2010 Posted 20 May 2010 Don't need any defenders especially if we get Bruce. Read the thread title and then tell me if you think he'll be thrown straight into the first team? Or should we just give up on our youth system if they're not providing any benefit to the first team immediately? <_< Pleasing that players are recognising how good our youth setup is, fingers crossed we start to see more of them coming through in the next few years
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 20 May 2010 Posted 20 May 2010 Pretty sure we also beat several top clubs to the signings of Kaebi and Sappleton!
MPH Posted 20 May 2010 Posted 20 May 2010 Jermaine Johnson anyone? This move just proves how far we've come to be honest. we need jermain Jackson as our mascot!!
