Fez of Mahrez Posted 6 October 2010 Posted 6 October 2010 At a Watford supporter's evening, Malky MacKay said we were in pole position to get Cleverley back but Pearson "played the tough guy" financially with Alex Ferguson and that's why he went to Vicarage Road on a season-long loan last year instead of coming back to us. I wonder. I doubt Pearson would have been in a position to act in that way, it may have been someone else instead... It certainly gives another clue as to why all was not well among the key figures within our club. With the benefit of hindsight, Cleverley would have been fairly useful for us to say the least - particularly had he remained injury-free.
dandannieldanok Posted 6 October 2010 Posted 6 October 2010 I doubt Pearson would have been in a position to act in that way, it may have been someone else instead... Why not? Managers are given a budget and they specify how much of it they want used on any given player.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 6 October 2010 Author Posted 6 October 2010 Why not? Managers are given a budget and they specify how much of it they want used on any given player. I think that's a brave assumption to make about all clubs, particularly ours.
dandannieldanok Posted 6 October 2010 Posted 6 October 2010 I think that's a brave assumption to make about all clubs, particularly ours. But it's an assumption seemingly backed up by Malky Mackay's comments.
Bettsj2 Posted 6 October 2010 Posted 6 October 2010 But it's an assumption seemingly backed up by Malky Mackay's comments. Dont waste your time mate. There's no way Pearson can be in the wrong in some peoples eyes.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 6 October 2010 Author Posted 6 October 2010 But it's an assumption seemingly backed up by Malky Mackay's comments. Supposing you're right in your assumption, we can look back now on the players we signed with the money that would otherwise have gone on Cleverley's loan e.g. Wellens mainly. I know this is all in the past but still interesting I think.
David Guiza Posted 6 October 2010 Posted 6 October 2010 I thought the general rule with Fergie was that he didn't like his players going on loan to the same club more then once because they could become to attactched the club and ask for a transfer. I could be wrong though?
Fez of Mahrez Posted 6 October 2010 Author Posted 6 October 2010 Dont waste your time mate. There's no way Pearson can be in the wrong in some peoples eyes. I've got no particular feelings either way actually. But thanks for that.
Bert Posted 6 October 2010 Posted 6 October 2010 Guiza's got it spot on. He rates the lad, doesn't want him getting attached. No coincidence he's not gone back to watford this season then eh.
Simmo86 Posted 6 October 2010 Posted 6 October 2010 I thought it was Hoos who played hardball with Utd?
Edmund Posted 6 October 2010 Posted 6 October 2010 Guiza's got it spot on. He rates the lad, doesn't want him getting attached. No coincidence he's not gone back to watford this season then eh. I'm not doubting what you're saying but I think the fact he didn't go back to Watford this season is because he's too good for the championship now hence why he's at Wigan.
Babylon Posted 7 October 2010 Posted 7 October 2010 It was said at the time by various people (mostly on Bentleys) that Hoos had pissed Ferguson off over the transfer, this was one of the things that added to his relationship breakdown with Pearson. I usually discount everything as just rumour when there isn't proof, but lets face it, almost all the rumours that have been floating about seem to have been true. Eg. Sousa being lined up, Pearson and Hoos not getting on etc. So I would be very surprised if the above wasn't true considering what has gone on since.
Ric Flair Posted 7 October 2010 Posted 7 October 2010 What's frightening is that our midfield in League One was better than what it is now when you look at the calibre of Mark Davies, Tom Cleverley and Andy King. I'd still do absolutely anything to see Mark Davies back here. I'd heard this before about Cleverley, absolutely scandalous if true. I'd heard we asked United for a payment to take Cleverley for another season and not paying them anything. Plebs.
VampLCFC Posted 7 October 2010 Posted 7 October 2010 According to today's Mirror, Sir Alex Ferguson is recalling Tom Cleverly from his season long loan spell at Wigan in January

Bugg Posted 7 October 2010 Posted 7 October 2010 I don't think Davies and Cleverly ever played in the same team for us did they? If Carlsberg did League 1 midfields...

I could be wrong though? I don't want to do the whole football rumours my mates dogs brother knows... but, when i was a cabbie in Leicester i used to have a regular who works at the walkers and in the close season she told me this was why Cleverley wasn't allowed back.. especially as he was in the media stating his growing love for LCFC during his stay here
surrifox Posted 8 October 2010 Posted 8 October 2010 I don't think there's any particular secret about this policy of Ferguson, I remember at the time that Fraizer Campbell was on loan at Hull and elsewhere that this was talked about so not that surprising really
AaronH Posted 8 October 2010 Posted 8 October 2010 If this is true, its probably the reason we didn't get ritche de laet
sdb Posted 8 October 2010 Posted 8 October 2010 definitely a player to try and sign if we ever get to the prem
FoxyPV Posted 8 October 2010 Posted 8 October 2010 definitely a player to try and sign if we ever get to the prem Not going to happen. He's good enough for Yaanited. We can only dream though...
