Asha Posted 29 November 2010 Posted 29 November 2010 but how much of that extra space in russia & australia is actually inhabitable and not just filled with spiders, snakes etc. (australia) or is too cold/infertile for any plant life to survive there + too remote to ship in food stuffs (russia) ? Sure, a decent percentage I'd guess...but it still suggests that space isn't really a problem. The planet probably has a [currently unknown] capacity for a population figure it can sustainably facilitate, and we're probably not a million miles away from it. I just don't think it's quite time to bring in the cyanide just yet.
Collymore Posted 29 November 2010 Posted 29 November 2010 Recently i've been reading up on the internet phenomenon that is 'Peak oil'. Do a quick google search and what you find might shock you, it stirred me a little bit. There are some serious pessimistic theories of what the future might hold, apocolypse-esque in their predictions. So, what do you think about it all? Some things that have interested me are Transition initiatives and towns, which whether you believe in this oil crash or not are a good idea imo. Hopefully im an easily scared guillable teen, but nothing ive read so far suggests so! I don't understand what you're so worried about - How exactly is this going to cause the end of the world? I predict that in 100 years humanity will know enough about quantum physics that energy/fuel production will be the least of our problems. I remember reading something ridiculous like there was enough potential energy in 1cm cube of air to power New York for a year or something along those lines...
Dr The Singh Posted 29 November 2010 Posted 29 November 2010 I think there's enough hot air comming out of our arses to energise the planet
Kenners Posted 29 November 2010 Author Posted 29 November 2010 Large al: Those graphs show us theres 190 years left of oil, however the idea of peak oil and the collapse theories that go with it are that its not when the fuel runs out its when supply begins to drop below demand(as a side note, ledc's are developing at an incredible rate at the moment, powered by oil). They predict this to be in the next 5 years and so predict a huge recession, much bigger than the one thats just been. And that sort of answers collymore's question, this 'oil crunch' in the doomsday theories could lead to mass starvation and ultimately the collapse of civilisation. Obviously its a theory designed to scare but some of the ideas behind it aren't particularly questionnable.

They'll also be able to build 'cities' on the most inhospitable land by then. With all the new technology and medical advances you can't really judge future lifestyles using today's as your yardstick.
Zingari Posted 29 November 2010 Posted 29 November 2010 i predict that one day in the future experts will get some predictions about the future correct

BoneDog Posted 30 November 2010 Posted 30 November 2010 Peak oil is a myth. Oil is abiotic and will continue to regenerate for as long as the planet is in working order. I'm sure there are examples of oil fields that have refilled after being emptied. I know that I've read about them but I'm trying to find where. The reason we are told that oil will run out is because it is a great way to make alot more money. How could they make so much cash from oil if we all knew it was here forever (and there are plenty of untapped massive fields out there)?
Daggers Posted 30 November 2010 Posted 30 November 2010 Yes. Oil spontaneously regenerates. And so does petrol if you have a positive midset - I've not paid for a tank of petrol since 1987.
BoneDog Posted 30 November 2010 Posted 30 November 2010 I've not paid for Horse radish since I saw Come Dine With Me and some country geezer showed me where to look for it. That stuff is a fine example of regeneration!

BoneDog Posted 30 November 2010 Posted 30 November 2010 A short article here about this subject. World May Not Run Out Of Crude It's quite a fascinating subject to me this peak oil stuff is. Hundreds of conspiracies going on in the oil world. They are messing with us and our money! I know they* think it is their money but we earn the fricker and all the time they* are thinking of more ways to take it off us even quicker. Just wait til paper money disappears and it's all electronic. Oh 90% of us are in trouble then. Do you know what, I'd start a revolution if Sky Sports didn't have so much good stuff on to keep me indoors. Or this tweed weren't so good. *not sure who 'they' are!
Daggers Posted 30 November 2010 Posted 30 November 2010 Sod it. I'm off to become a Zapatista. Do you prefer his later stuff or when he was with The Mothers of Invention?

I was expecting a much grander and slightly retarded conspiracy than the obvious - "they're lying about a lack of oil to make more money"
Finnegan Posted 30 November 2010 Posted 30 November 2010 They're lying about a lack of oil to make more money because the monkies on Saturn told them to.
Father Ted Posted 30 November 2010 Posted 30 November 2010 You've copied and pasted that. I have got a bright side
SystonFox Posted 30 November 2010 Posted 30 November 2010 190 years from now I predict we are all dead!
