colbo68 Posted 4 December 2010 Posted 4 December 2010 Useless away from home. That was pathetic. Gifted Watford with two early goals, Weale with another shocker (made up for it in the end, though), no goal from open play, no goal from a corner (and we had another roughly ten of them), poor defending, players not being present. We've got one of the worst away records in the league and this away record will be decisive comes the end of the campaign. With the form we're on, we're not going to make the playoffs, but linger on in mid-table mediocrity. This inconsistency is too much to bear. THIS HAS GOT TO STOP!! At least another 2'000 made themselves heard. Well done to all of you! Bizarre game today... made the trip to Watford on fans coach 4 expecting to see City win on the back of the performance against Forest. Initial impression was one of amazement that Watford were once a Premiership Club cos the ground really is shite... First half they looked like they would score with every attack - our back four were surprisingly out of sorts and Chris Weale devoid of any confidence. Second half it looked like only one side was gonna win it (us) esp after we scored the equaliser....however, strange again that this spurred the Hornets back into action and the last 15 was all them... Changes I would have made.... 1. certainly would have played Vassell down the middle cos Taylor and Mariappa, although great in the air, were there for the taking if we would have kept it on the floor 2. would have had more shots..time after time we had the ball on the edge of their area (especially Wellens), with the fans baying for us to shoot 3. would have brought on Dyer, not Waghorn... the former's pace would have broken them down, the latters confidence is short at the moment. For me the jury is still out on Sven.... I think he got the tactics wrong today, played Vassell out of position and should have brought on Lloyd - these seemed obvious to me. The only saving grace was that we didnt capitulate after going two down...which we would have done under Sousa
Baby Elvis Posted 4 December 2010 Posted 4 December 2010 Okay... Play offs are not on my mind judging on this performance. On Monday night we had a very promising win against so called ( play off) contenders but to lost to a very poor Watford team is beyond me! The defence on Monday looked solid but today it all went askew! Very new to this forum lark so any idea on what happened today thanks!
Salieri Posted 4 December 2010 Posted 4 December 2010 There are clearly still problems to address, but Sven will indeed address them come January. I expect us to spend big in January, the Thais want promotion this year and have the clout to back up their convictions. I think transfer wise Sven has done very well considering the fact only loanees/frees were on the cards up to now, the measure of the mans nous will come to the fore in the new year. Mark my words. Play Offs here we come.
iBleedLeicesterColours Posted 4 December 2010 Posted 4 December 2010 Firstly, we deserved to lose as a result of a woeful start & first half and not taking our chances. We should have won this game, and this is the kind of game we have to win if we want the Playoffs, Watford are no more than an average side at best. Gallagher had 2 good chances, Abe had a side volley and im sure there were other very good chances for us to score. Bednar looked lost, Hobbs confidence has gone & Davies wasnt good today. How many more errors can Weale make before being replaced?! Not only the goal but everyone gets anxious everytime he gets the ball! We are not the hard-to-beat, organised side we were. Sven has done well but has to get some consistency going, this improving our away record. Another good showing from our fans Creating some good noise away this year. Oh and what happened in our end 1st half, everyone got up around the stairs area ?

I think the mark of Sven as the manager won't be simply about attracting big names to the club...lets be honest he's got the financial backing to do so...it will be about getting the players he signs to play well together... today he didn't....which is why I remain unsure about him..... On paper the side we put out today should have beaten Watford - a eam including a number of premiership signings including Curtis, Bednar and Naughton should be able to have beaten a very average Watford side.
martyn Posted 4 December 2010 Posted 4 December 2010 The defence were an absolute shambles to a man, and as a unit. We were asleep for 30 mins and duly got punished. If I was Lloyd Dyer I'd be furious. Has been one of our top performers and is not getting a look in whilst we try and shake the rust off Vassell.

There was very nearly fighting amongst our own fans...some wouldnt sit down and didnt take too kindly to others shouting at them to sit down.... that was all

It was a bad day (particularly first half) at the office, nothing more. The performance just a few days ago against Forest with the same line up was one of the best i've seen for a while, you can't argue those players didn't play well together that night? It's about finding a bit of consistency which i'm sure will come.

Wymsey Posted 4 December 2010 Posted 4 December 2010 Shit performance today by the sounds of it. May probably mean we will be brilliant on Sat
Petchy Posted 4 December 2010 Posted 4 December 2010 Bad away day for me, thought we may have snatched a point but wasn't to be. Highlight for me was seeing Oakley(?)'s shot hit the steward at the front which was greeted with a huge cheer! He was rubbing that one for a while - stinger!

hackneyfox Posted 5 December 2010 Posted 5 December 2010 Why is everyone so worried? Buy a new goaie, Weale will let in more than any of our strikers can score. Buy Davies, Naughton and Cameron in January Keep Vitor fit to play with them. Buy two good goals scorers NOT forwards. And fit Vassel, Yuki, King, Wellens Gallagher & Dyer around them. Discussions about Fryatt or Howard are pointless. Easy About 30 million plus wages should do it. ,
Tilley Posted 5 December 2010 Posted 5 December 2010 Chris Weale  What the hell was he doing for their second and let's be honest, he should have saved the third too. Terrible.
l444ry Posted 5 December 2010 Posted 5 December 2010 Chris Weale  What the hell was he doing for their second and let's be honest, he should have saved the third too. Terrible. I don't think the video shows the true pace of the cross, header or angle. Poor goal to concede as it was, Weale was no more to blame than the defender's pathetic attempt at shutting the cross down or both the central defenders woeful efforts at dealing with a bread and butter cross into their zone.

Championship rarely works like that maybe if your team though they only had to turn up maybe it explains the 1st half performance?
ThurnbyLodgeFox Posted 5 December 2010 Posted 5 December 2010 One of the best games ive been to. Leicester showed great fighting spirit and were robbed of a point because of mistakes from the defenders. Even though I was really ill yesterday, still went and hoped Leicester would have got a point!
Karljohn Posted 5 December 2010 Posted 5 December 2010 Looks like a bit "too much too soon" going on with the defence, was last seasons back four really so bad? Yes we needed a CB after Brown and yes Bruno didnt start the season well but away from home we were solid, now we seem to be lacking concentration from the off, very unusual given that Naughton, Davies and Cunningham are supposedly premier league pedigree. I did have some doubts about Davies initially, anyone who has Matty Fryatt take the piss out of him (carling cup @ villa) must surely raise a few eyebrows. Whilst he undoubtedly has a cool head, he's nowhere near the 8m price tag that Villa paid for his services, I would love to see a fit Tunchev with Vitor and see if this leaky away defence can be sealed. Anyone who thinks premier league quality can drop down into the championship for an easy ride is being proved wrong, just ask craig bellamy!
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 5 December 2010 Posted 5 December 2010 Naughton is starting to remind me of Glen Johnson. Quick and good going forward be he isnt the best defensively. Him and Davies are good players, though I do think people on here think too highly of them both.

Agree on that, Naughton got caught out far too often.] Massive shame we couldn't capitalise on levelling the score, oh well, another day another game. Watford really is a shit hole, Vicarage road is a complete joke of a ground.

Him and Davies are good players, though I do think people on here think too highly of them both. I think they are both trying to hard to impress, not just us but any team, preferably in the EPL, who wants to strengthen in defence. They seem to be making little attempt to forge a strong, cohesive back 4 with their team mates, primarily they seem to be playing for themselves. Regarding Naughton (and Cunningham), if you are going to encourage them to get forward then the two centerbacks need to stay back, at present both both Davies and Naugton rampaging forward our right side is wide open for the counter. It is also a good idea to have a proper holding midfield player if we are going to play with two attacking full backs.
Foxblogger Posted 5 December 2010 Posted 5 December 2010 I think some people need to calm down a bit. This defence has kept four clean sheets in its last seven matches. We were asleep for the first 30 minutes and it cost us dearly, but credit to Watford, they pressed the man on the ball well and recovered the momentum having lost the lead.

With regard to the ground hopefully these reports of potential investment can come true and we will get to build a new east stand to smarten the place up... The Rookery is quite good now but clearly you don't get the chance to go there whilst the away end is really too small but about 10 years old already.

We were asleep for the first 30 minutes and it cost us dearly, but credit to Watford, they pressed the man on the ball well and recovered the momentum having lost the lead. To be fair, two of those clean sheets came against Preston and Barnsley who were nothing short of abysmal, and we were fortunate that the ball ended up on Browny's head against Preston in the 93rd minute. In my opinion I guess I just expected a little bit more from the back four given that they have had some games under their belt, I honestly believe that Preston and Barnsley wouldn't have scored against Neilson, Hobbs, Morro, Berner they were really so poor, credit to the defence for Forest and Derby but I agree with the Glen Johnson comment (which I think applies to Davies too) that these 40-50 yards forrays into opponents halves do sometimes have a consequence at this level, usually in the shape of a forearm smash from some meathead. Ashley Cole was guilty of forward runs with no end product in his Arsenal days, then getting exposed at the back just like Johnson, I really hope that the defence gets it together and whilst I acknowledge clean sheets 4 in 7, it has to be acknowledged that we've lost 5 cheap goals in our last 2 away games. The only positive from that is that we could go back to their parent club and say that he's been part of a defence that isnt doing its job away from home! and carve out a cut price deal!

It is also a good idea to have a proper holding midfield player if we are going to play with two attacking full backs. I agree, I think they are trying hard to impress too, not always playing as a backline but as individuals. Like I said I think Davies is good, but some how he seems to have been made a great and fantastic player by our fans for some reason. I do think the problem is still that we need a leader at the back, a Brown figure who gives orders and has experience. Davies is good on the ball and quick, but doesnt actually win much in the air against the bigger physical players, and think he would be better with someone like that alongside him. Hobbs despite looking physically bigger than Davies, is also victim of this, and for us to really be consistent at the back I do feel we are missing something at the back, which is quite frustrating as both of them are good players. Regarding Naughton and Cunningham, I think we are much more of a threat going forward with those two compared to Berner and Neilson/Morrison. That sort of reflects the fact we have scored more this season than we had this time last season, but last season the defence was so much stronger. Last season we effectively had 4 centre backs (in terms of height and strength of the players) along the back 4, though admittedly we were sometimes out paced along the wings. This season we are getting done on the break down the wings not only because of of having very atttacking full backs, but also the fact that our current formation of Gallagher and Vassell on the wing, do not get back and defend the way they should, leaving much space down the sides.
