danny. Posted 25 January 2011 Posted 25 January 2011 Yea true, my stereo has the same but I find it much handier just using the iPhone, as iTunes has already synced a load of music to it while I was getting my photos off the phone or charging it etc. I suppose it's just being lazy. Not sure if you can just plug in an mp3 player to the usb port though? I know my blackberry never worked like that, it will take USB sticks OK though. One thing I have noticed is there are more options when the iPhone/iPod is plugged in, like you can browse by genre etc. or if you are playing a song by an artist it will list all the other songs by that artist. It doesn't do that for USB sticks, although could just be my stereo.

I don't know, but I guess that Ipods don't work like this (and possibly Sony's), hence the special mode and also why you get additional functionality, like it recognising genres and all that. At least you can buy devices that can handle both. You can search for files and folders on my car stereo (although doing much of this while driving is not a good idea) and not do much else, but there is a random play option, thankfully
Rocket-Ron Posted 25 January 2011 Posted 25 January 2011 My mates just given me a mini disc player. It's great Anyone like to comment on that
AoWW Posted 11 February 2011 Posted 11 February 2011 Ok, ok, so maybe I'm gonna succomb and finally give in and get an i-pod. Purely and simply because it'd be useful to connect to the new car stereo head unit I'm thinking of getting (that's fully i-pod compatible, blah, blah). Only really need about 16GB so thinking of getting a second-hand 4th generation Nano or maybe stretching to a new i-pod touch. Thing is, all the files I have already (that I access through Windows Media Player) are all MP3 or WMA files. Will they work with the i-pod? Is it just an urban myth that it's difficult & you need to convert them to a different file format. Can I simply drag and drop what I've got already or do I need to do it via i-tunes or summat? Apologies if this has already been answered - I don't have the time right now to trawl through the thread.
Alexikokopops Posted 11 February 2011 Posted 11 February 2011 MP3s will play fine. iTunes converted all my WMAs. It's easy, the difficulty is a myth

It would be a lot cheaper just to get a USB memory stick and alot quicker to put your files on than using itunes.
hairy Posted 11 February 2011 Posted 11 February 2011 right, does an i-pod support avi files? No you will need to convert them to MP4. There is however an app which lets you play them on an ipad (think its called cinema divx) and I am not sure if that can be used on an ipod
AoWW Posted 19 February 2011 Posted 19 February 2011 Hmm, so I'm looking at getting an ipod (new, or 'like new', probably off ebay) but am undecided between a 16gb 4th generation Nano, or (for a similar price) an 80gb or 120gb Classic. Now I'd have no problem filling a 16GB with music but, in reality, that's probably as large as I'd need for all my favourite stuff. But, as the Classic is not wildly different in price, should I go for that... I'm sure I'd quickly enough find more music to add to it! I'm only really looking to link it to my car stereo and play it through that, only using it on the odd occasion when I'm 'out and about'. So, in that respect, the physical size of it doesn't really matter. Might also buy a docking station so I can use it in my bedroom - again, size wouldn't be an issue. In fact, if it was too small I'd probably be more likely to lose it in the car. I don't particularly need any fancy features. So, what would people recommend? Are there any particular features on either one that I'm overlooking?
Alexikokopops Posted 20 February 2011 Posted 20 February 2011 By the sounds of it, I'd go for the classic. You've stated at least 17 times that size doesn't matter, so if you can get a big one for the same price as a small then go for it. Reading back, that looks like absolute filth.

AoWW Posted 4 March 2011 Posted 4 March 2011 Ok, so I ignored everyone's advice and bought a secondhand (but new, if that makes sense!) 4th generation nano because, well, it was a bargain. That, however means that at long-last I'm having to get my head around itunes. All ok so far, downloaded, and it's automatically found my mp3 files, etc. But my wma files (of which there are many, stored in various random locations on my lappy) aren't automatically in itunes (which I kinda knew would be the case but I was clinging onto the blind hope that it would all just happen with no effort whatsoever on my part). Now I've discovered that when I manage to track down where said wma files are I can drag and drop em into itunes which then converts them itself into AAC files but, well, it's all a bit of a faff and long-winded. Is this really the only option available or is there some magical solution that I've missed? Or even a way of easily finding all my wma files (all unprotected, as far as I know) on my laptop if I have to go the manual 'drag and drop' route? Are there any other music files it's likely to have not found too?

I was in the same boat, I just got a new Ipod Touch delivered today and i needed to install Itunes after a few years of using windows media (because my laptop has these little buttons on and they only work with WMP), i have loads of WMA files and i just went onto either add files or add folders to library (on the file tab) and most of my music is in 'My music' or 'Downloads' so i just highlighted everything from those folders and it just converted them all. Don't know if that helps ... Good luck.

When you add MP3s to the library there is an option that stops the program converting it into stupid file type X. And I believe your nano should be able to play MP3 files as well. Don't know if that actually helped you in any way

It makes more sense now though, although I'd already let itunes convert them to AAC files by then.
The Doctor Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 2 questions: How do i change the set-up in itunes so it converts WMA files to MP3 rather than AAC? When i import an audiobook from cd, itunes reads it as multiple tracks and seperates it as such, how do i change those tracks to be a single audiobook?
Spencer Posted 6 July 2011 Posted 6 July 2011 Can anybody recommend some decent headphones for my iPod? Budget between £0-£150ish, not really sure what brand to go for. Preferably want the ones you put on your head, rather than the ones that slot straight in your ears!

My Dad's just bought a pair of these and they're bloody brilliant, highly recommended. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-HD201-Closed-Back-Headphones/dp/B0007XJSQC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1309978261&sr=8-3

Preferably want the ones you put on your head, rather than the ones that slot straight in your ears! I bought these. Some nice obnoxiousness by Adidas with some decent enough sound by Sennheiser. I think if you're going to spend over £50 it's not going to make that much difference on an iPod, you're going to get past the point where the quality of the headphones won't make that big a difference.. A lot of the decent headphones in that range tend to have the quarter inch jacks too, or massive cables for listening to your hifi system. That was my experience anyway (I was basically looking with the same spec as you!). As for the headphones I bought, I like them because I'm obnoxious and so are they. They also sound good. The only down side is that they seem a little quieter, but that's because I'm used to in ear headphones. It's not usually a problem because I use them for listening in the office or walking about town. However, when I used to get the tube to work (before cycling) I found that I couldn't really listen to talking postcasts. Then again the tube can be outrageously noisy. In short, I'd recommend them.
Webbo Posted 6 July 2011 Posted 6 July 2011 My daughter asked for (and got) some Skull Candy earphones for her birthday last month. You can buy them in Irish.
