MP3 Players

Hi all,

Firstly apologies if a thread exists - have used search function to no avail, but mods please merge is necessary.

I am on holiday in a couple of weeks and want a new mp3 player to take. I had a creative zen 20gb for years which I loved but the modern equivalents seem below par.

My requirements are plenty of storage ie 80gb+, not too clunky, decent playback, sub £220 cost, decent software. Not fussed about apps, the headphones it comes with or general looks.

The only option as I see it is an ipod classic - anyone have anything else that fits the above description?

I love my classic, I really don't think there's any point of buying anything other than an iPod at the moment. Would get another tomorrow if mine packed in.

I've got the classic too, had it for about 3 or 4 years now and it's great. Can't really go wrong with it, loads of space, can play videos and it's a right sturdy little thing.

I've got an iPhone now though so I use it more as a storage device for all the music I've collected over the years and stick my favourite songs on the phone.

Just got a 32Gb Touch for myself... I already own a classic (4th gen) and a shuffle)

The only problem is once in iTunes your music is kindof stuck...

Thanks for replies all. Downloaded itunes last night and I enjoy it as little as I did when I tried it a few years back. I'm used to mediamonkey which seems a lot more flexible.

Phube what do you mean about music being stuck? I am ripping cd's in mp3 format so assume I can use without itunes if I choose?

Anyway £173 at Amazon seems best deal unless Asda still have them for £170.

Apologies but just a couple more questions - what's real world battery life?

Also I have done a bit of research and there doesn't appear to be a new version of the classic in the immediate offing - has anyone heard different?

I have a 30gb creative zen extra. I have had it for about 6 years. This year it stopped working, and even though I can fix it, I decided to get a new one.

Therefore I was in the same predicament as the OP.

I used the following factors to decide which mp3 player to choose.

1- sound quality

2- space

3-data transfer method

1: If you like sound quality and if you also have one or two FLAC files, choose Creative. The x-fi system is fantastic. Sound quality is massively better compared with the ipod.

2: How much space do you need. You may think you need 80gb but you may not. I have over 100gb of music and assorted shit. But seriously there will be stuff you don't need. I opted for a 32gb.

3: itunes is shit. My zen x-fi2 is a simple drag and drop data transfer method. Easy.

I have a zen x-fi2. I have had no problems with it so far. I never had a problem with my previous creative mp3 player and the same applies to everyone I know. Don't be a fooking sheep. A device that plays music is not a ipod. Its an mp3 player. Fight the brand!

ps. With the 'i' brand, has anyone noticed how it controls what you can and can't do - ipod need itunes - buy from itunes - only x amount of devices you can store the music on - have to have music on itunes otherwise ipod is wiped (is this still true?).

EDIT: I refer to media monkey and itunes comparison. Hell yeah media monkey is waaayyyyy better. The creative media player device is a lot better then itunes.

Not being a tech bod myself, I ripped straight into iTunes then they were in MPEG4 which I can't use anywhere else, but as you say if you rip in using mp3 it is better. But I can't be arsed to go and do it all again! Into mp3... therefore stuck!

Apple are evil incarnate. You're paying an extra £20-40 on any iPod for which you can get an equivillant non-Apple iPod (Creative, Archos, Sony Walkman, etc) that doesn't slave you to iTunes. I was given an iPod shuffle and I hate it. Sure it works, sure it plays music, but it slaves me to iTunes, only plays MP3s, is awkward to use, lousey battery life and if I'd just been given the money instead that had been used to pay for it, I know I could have gotten something so much better.

Have always had Creatives. Most recently the Creative Zen 32gb which just stopped working. Need a new one myself but can't seem to find a great selection of 32gb+ so far. Want something similar anyway.

you can manage your ipod through mediamonkey. Google it.

Apart from an ipod my only remomendation would be an Archos. A 500g internet tablet aint bad for the money

I got the kids and misses SONY WALKMANS (great sound, easy to use, does the biz) for xmas.. ipods are a rip off and you can get the same tech mp3`s for a lot less...

We also download all music for free instead of being dicked by itunes...

I'm not saying iTunes is what you should use, but you do know that you can use music from other sources rather than the iTunes store, right? You don't even have to make an account.

Macbook Pro, iPod Classic, iPhone, iTunes - they all simply work together.

Back in the darkness, when I had a lump of shit Windows laptop, iTunes was a real pain - but not when it is running on the OS it was designed for. I couldn't be happier with the way it helps me to organise my music, books, audiobooks, podcasts and downloads.

I pay a bit more? So what. It works well (no crashes, no bollocks) and it looks aesthetically pleasing. And I'm dead happy with it all.

]anything but ipod[/color] is a good place to start.

i'd endorse the Creative line of thinking myself. i've had a 20gb Creative Zen for ages, gives you the freedom to buy your music from wherever the hell you like.

And i've compared it to a couple of ipods before and it simply sounds better.

I really don't get this "you can only buy music from iTunes if you have an iPod". I buy no music from iTunes and mine works a treat.

hold on a second. Can you rip cd's and put the music onto an ipod the way you would a normal mp3 player?

Yeah. And you can buy music from anywhere too.
