right. Just got a classic and can't work out how to load my music to it. I've just dragged a folder of music from my music to the drive the ipod is connected to in my computer but it doesn't show up when i disconnect the ipod and turn it on.

I went into a swimming pool with my iPod Classic in my shorts. It hasn't worked since.

I'm now using my 32gb iPhone but it's nowhere near big enough. I would only ever consider getting another Classic, will do that soon probably.

One key thing though is headphones - get some Sennheiser CX300's. Anyone who uses the shit white ones Apple provide is an idiot.

Basically if you have a lot of music like many of us in thread clearly do, the Classic really should be the only option. Unless you fancy sifting through your collection and manually choosing which tracks to put on. But for £160-odd worth of kit, for 160GB you can't go wrong.

The battery life on mine is still admirable after a few years, and aside from once recently when I had to restore it, there haven't been any other problems with it. Cracking value in my opinion, and like others have said, you can still get your music from anywhere.

Don't think you can drag and drop (u certainly can't with a Shuffle) you need to sync to iTunes or possibly some other media player.

Told you iPods are crap.

fuck itunes.

Using a thing called copytrans manager, loading on fine but some albums have supposedly been split up, black holes and revelations by muse - 3 seperate albums within the ipod - 1 saying 1 track, 1 saying 2 tracks, 1 saying 9 tracks but when i go in each album all the tracks for the entire album are there - what's going on and how do i fix it?

edit: the fuck? Can't add led zep - files are unsupported format (wma).

Even WITH iTunes, I don't think it will take WMAs.

Is no one listening?

I wasn't referring to his WMA comment. I was referring to all the bullshit about splitting up albums.

As for WMA I just Googled "convert WMA to MP3" and got 18.5 million hits. Maybe Large Al should use some common sense.

And get a decent MP3 that isn't so fussy?

All i was doing was expressing my displeasure that it's so fussy about the format of the files. I know how to convert wma files to mp3's.

I'm wondering if the iPod was the best choice of mp3 player for you...

Seriously though once you overcome your initial displeasure I'm pretty sure you'll be more than satisfied. I just ordered the 160gb Classic as a replacement for my drowned former one.

Not being a tech bod myself, I ripped straight into iTunes then they were in MPEG4 which I can't use anywhere else, but as you say if you rip in using mp3 it is better. But I can't be arsed to go and do it all again! Into mp3... therefore stuck!

In some settings you can change what format its ripped in I believe, along with bitrate.

Thanks for further replies, I got a bit excited NYE and plumped for a 64gig touch, which will be in the post today. Just about squeeze my library on there, but will do a bit of spring cleaning so I have space for a few videos/apps etc.

For the record I'm not a massive fan of apple as a company, but in terms of media players (large capacity at least, my sansa clip is much better than a shuffle/nano) they are peerless.

If I didn't want one straight away I may have waited for the new android based samsung offering to see what its like, but I'll post some feedback on the touch in a couple of weeks.

Now to buy a case...

I went for this one on Amazon Link for less than £6 plus it comes with a screen protector too:

can't say if it's good or not, because the case turned up (which looks nice) but the iPod did not... :(

Bought my first ipod classic a few weeks ago. The sound quality compared to Sony and Creative players is poor. EQ settings are non editable on the ipod and can't edit playlists. Nice feel to the ipod but for ease of use and sound quality I'd go for Creative. Oh yes, the ipod earphones are crap as well, bin them.

I don't see the point of buying an mp3 player when the sound quality is shite and you can't change the EQ settings.

So why do people buy ipods?

I mean come on and fooking wake up people. You are all corporate whores. An mp3 players primary functions is to play music. Therefore the one which has the best sound quality wins.

Also my creative x-fi2 - all I do to put new music on it is to link it to my laptop. A folder pops up. I then drag and drop a folder containing whatever album I want to put on it. Its like using a USB stick. It is straightforward and easy.

As for file formats it supports almost everything I think. EVEN FLAC!!!! Yes even flac. files. I watched a film on it yesterday. AVI file, drag and drop. Simples.

Most people aren't audiophiles and can't really tell the difference... If we all cared we'd all have to buy Bose etc.!

And Apple product, crap or not do look good!

i brought mine because it was the cheapest for the memory size + extras (e.g. video), and also it was cheaper to buy ipod + docking station than a new hi-fi system.
