MP3 Players

And iPods are mp3s for people who don't like music much... as Jon the Hat argues... sound quality isn't important.

Nah, of course not!

On the contrary, music is about much much more than sound quality. In fact I would argue that the levels of difference you are arguing about are completely meaningless to the music and are in fact only of any interest to a small niche of sound geeks. Who needs the highest sound quality in portable form? The sales figures suggest very few. The rest of us are happy to have the CDs and seperates at home if we really want to listen to something that closely.

I think you're being massively patronizing. Why do you have to be snooty about people who care more about a bit of audio clarity than sales figures?

And Trav wasn't? "ipods are for people who dont like music that much"? That is being incredibly snooty. I dont actually give a toss what people spend their money on, I just though that comment was a bit rich. I prefer to wory about the music itself. The sales figures suggest most people are in the same camp.

Obviously some sound quality is important, but the widesrepad switch to a lower quality for convenience suggest not that important!

Edit: I also have no idea what they are talking about.

I just felt dismissing James, Smudge and Bellend as geeks because music is their hobby was a bit of a dick thing to say, is all.

That's a cruel hand you've been dealt with there. Try this: my lounge isn't big enough to have my separates in. IT'S LIKE A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY.

They do get a sound proofed room of their own though (although this has recently been invaded by gf's random stuff that she's brought with her)

I am passionate about music but I use an iPod.

I just don't know who I am anymore

I'm not that passionate about music anymore, I guess that's why my iPod is good enough. ;)

Christ my comment has kicked this thread into life.

There was some reference to a comment which went along the lines of "Ipods being for people who don't like music".

I think a more appropriate statement would be: Ipods are for people who don't understand or recognise the difference in sound quality between mp3 players, whether or not this is due to intelligence, ignorance, or because they are simply not aware .

I think that if people actually compared the sound quality of an ipod with other devices, there would be a considerable decrease in ipod sales.

Or they don't care becuase is it not that significant, in their well informed, intelligent considered opinion.

Since when did any of them ever happen in here?

I still think if people were aware of the difference in sound quality, a number will pass the ipod to one side. Yes there will be those who couldn't give a toss but sound quality, surprisingly, has never really been brought up regarding ipods.

I'm aware, but I have other priorities when it comes to choosing my music. You underestimate my laziness when it comes to deciding what music to put on my MP3 player, and how quickly I can go from listening to or thing to another. I NEED ALL MY MUSIC AVAILABLE JUST IN CASE. Imagine if someone tried to mug me, unless I play them the a Capella version of the theme tune for 80s cartoon sensation Gummi Bears, followed by "The Mariner's Revenge Song" (a 9 minute sea shanty on the Decemberists 2005 album Picaresque), with the entire sound track to the 1979 BBC David Attenborough "Life on Earth" to finish? I am now prepared for such an eventuality. I've made the decision that I'll take a very slight hit (in my opinion) in music quality to protect me from the epidemic of music based muggings that is sweeping across London.

I'm a schizophrenic music listener :D

Just a follow up post, and I would say 7/10 thus far.

Quite slick, but didn't 'just work' as claimed, needed a few ons and offs to get first sync succesful.

TBH most apps are tiresome after more than 10 mins, but I didn't buy it for that so hey ho.

Music player frustrates me a bit - I like having all songs on random, but then I might pick out another from an album to play nexty. When I do this there is no easy way to regress to playing all at random.

Camera is poor, but again not reason for purchase.

Not changed my life, and if I had not been in a rush would have maybe plumped for something else, but I'm sure I won't lose too much cash on it if the new Samsung player takes my fancy.

Also my creative x-fi2 - all I do to put new music on it is to link it to my laptop. A folder pops up. I then drag and drop a folder containing whatever album I want to put on it. Its like using a USB stick. It is straightforward and easy.

As for file formats it supports almost everything I think. EVEN FLAC!!!! Yes even flac. files. I watched a film on it yesterday. AVI file, drag and drop. Simples.

I am sorry to read you have to sacrifice the quality of your videos because you have a creative. If you had bought an Archos 5 tablet you could watch HD and also listen to FLAC. They also have a 500gb hard drive, recording capability (TV and sound), internet access, touch screen and android.

I'm only interested in listening to music though. I have tried the video function and it was alright. HD with a smaller screen in my opinion is pointless. The Archos 5 does look like a good device though. Do you have one?

The fact that iPods have so much Market share is handy in that everything is compatible with them. My car radio has an iPod connector that lets me control the iPod or iPhone and also charges it, are there any creative zen compatible car radios? You charge an iPod with the same lead as an iPhone or iPad, there are loads of iPod docks around so it's was to have one in the bedroom, another in the bathroom etc, just plug in your iPod or iPhone and instant music.

I guess for most people they don't car about sound quality as they don't use it for serious music listening, I only use headphones at the gym with an old nano or m iPhone, if i wanna sit and listen to the nuances of music I'll put some music on at home which has a fairly nice onkyo receiver/mordant short speakers combo ( although played using those nasty high bitrate mp3s from a media centre pc... which don't sound any different to CDs played through the same system)

Yes I have one. Its the only player I could get my music collection on without having to transcode the FLAC files. It also serves as a good backup drive. I have a SONOS system at home so a lot of my collection is FLAC.

You can plug it into a TV to get the most from the HD. Good if you go away and have a TV where your staying. But you can tell the difference on a smaller screen.

My only complaint about the Archos is that the software can be a bit buggy but they are constantly releasing updates so hopefully we will get there one day. The music playback is bug free but some of the other functions tend to make it crash or freeze from time to time.

I do have three ipods as well. A nano, a touch and an iphone. Compared to the Archos the sound quality is poor but I still use them when I am walking the dog etc. What gets me about them is all the mega expensive high quality docks (such as those blimps) that people buy thinking they will improve the sound.

If you want something with a dock then that's fair enough, but I've never quite understood the point of them. What's wrong with a good old fashioned USB port? My car stereo has a USB port and cheerily reads files off both my Sansa and usb memory sticks, so presumably would do the same for any other mp3 player, Creatives included. You have to put it in a special mode for Ipods, I'm not sure why
