purpleronnie Posted 3 March 2011 Posted 3 March 2011 How an Englishman can like Celtic is beyond me! Because some celtic fans hate the english? We dont like them because they dont like us. Sounds like playground mentality.
cambridgefox Posted 3 March 2011 Posted 3 March 2011 I dont get in to the religion thing, but i can see why Celtic are hated due to the IRA support , and here is my problem.i hate the pro IRA thing, but due to the ex Leicester players /managers who have been to Celtic i have a soft spot for them.Im one confused person.
purpleronnie Posted 3 March 2011 Posted 3 March 2011 But theres reasoning behind the fact some and I repeat some fans sing pro IRA songs. The british army being sent to NI when even the NI prime minister didnt want them there, and lets face it some british troops didnt cover themselves in glory when they were over there. If you lived in NI during those times you might not feel so anti IRA. I'm definately not supporting those fans but you have to look at why they feel that way.
MPH Posted 3 March 2011 Posted 3 March 2011 How an Englishman can like Celtic is beyond me! Some people seperate themselves from any religious/ secterian attachments to a club and follow a club like rangers or celtic for reasons that really are not very deep or meaningful at all... I loved Celtic When O'Niell went there. and chuffin nora when Lennon went there and Guppy.... Kind of like them because of Lennon being their manager now, actually. In other words some people make football to be about the football... not about any moronic fan and what they decide to sing or wave.

My mums cousin lived in Belfast in the height of the trouble and he was an irish protestant,he had friends killed by the IRA as they were in the wrong part of town he was in the army and had to flee to England as his family was threatened,he had to use protestant removal firms,so as not to alert of his whereabouts and use protestant taxis..You tell me if thats reasonable,i also worked with a catholic guy whos grandfather was one of the original members of the IRA,who were NOT a violent organisation, he was disgusted at how they turned to violence and wondered if both catholics and protestants really knew why they were fighting. My mate refused to eat at a well known fast food joint with golden arches and still doesnt!
Fosse Boy Posted 3 March 2011 Posted 3 March 2011 **** the IRA and **** Celtic. Would never have guessed from your username that that was your viewpoint on the subject.

I started liking Rangers when I was young because of Gazza, Laudrup and McCoist plus they play in blue. But being a proud Englishman I can't turn a blind eye to all this pro IRA, anti English bollocks Celtic spout. Its a natural reaction, but Rangers also have an equal amount of deadheads. Problem with Lenny is since he's been manager up there, he has turned into a complete and utter mouthpiece. Got no respect for any officials and thinks he's above the law, hopefully his appeal for his 6 game ban will get turned down so he can sort himself out!
Leicester_Loyal Posted 3 March 2011 Posted 3 March 2011 Would never have guessed from your username that that was your viewpoint on the subject. Don't tell me you support them?
cambridgefox Posted 3 March 2011 Posted 3 March 2011 I also like Berwick Rangers for being the only English club in the Scottish leagues.Shame they are shit!
Fosse Boy Posted 3 March 2011 Posted 3 March 2011 Don't tell me you support them? Sort of looked out for Rangers as a kid coz my neighbour supported them, leaned more towards Celtic lately what with the Leicester connections (O'Neill, Guppy, Lennon, Parker etc). Also rate their support as the best on this island. Show the wonders an active Ultras group can do to spur on the rest of the fanbase. Would hardly say I support them though. Have no time for the sectarian shite on either side of the divide. Maybe I should just follow Hibernian (as I did briefly during my glorious reign with them on FM 2005).

Like I said I dont support those pro IRA fans but theres 2 sides to the arguement something I'm sure you understand. You're giving two examples in a time and place that has 1000's of examples of good and bad you must realise some Celtic fans are anti british for a reason and some fans would have families with opposite experiences to those you've posted about.
FoxyPV Posted 3 March 2011 Posted 3 March 2011 Most of the ones chanting republican songs will be from NI who have good reason to hate the Brits although the anger and hatred is somewhat anachronistic now given the relative peace. I daresay a good proportion of those involved in fighting will be from NI because those glasgow OF fans will have to go to work together the next day. The boat back from glasgow was always notorious for fighting as the two sets of fans were stuck together for the two hours and usually steaming. Cambridge - the Brits were, for the most part, cnts during their time in NI. I'm not condoning the behaviour of the Provos either.
lcfc"weasel" Posted 3 March 2011 Posted 3 March 2011 How an Englishman can like Celtic is beyond me! Because we put sectarian and religious bullshit aside. I've seen Celtic play twice, one against HSV and once in an old firm game, both were extremely good experiences and the old firm game beats anything I've experienced down Filbert Way. I also follow Hearts and Hibs as my mum supports Hearts and my grandad supports Hibs.
Vacamion Posted 3 March 2011 Posted 3 March 2011 Every time either of he Old Firm play, hundreds of fans come over from Northern Ireland. Even when the opposition is Hamilton Accies. Last night, I was trying to get across Glasgow before the football and hit the motorway, to be confronted by a traffic jam containing loads of coaches from Fife and Edinburgh, full of fans of the Old Firm (not mixed, obviously) wearing their colours and their scarves and flags, being transported in from nowhere near Glasgow. I was once at a game at Arbroath and got chatting with a director who told me that 3 coachloads of Old Firm fans set off from the town every week headed for Glasgow. These fans not supporting their local team (it happens all over Scotland) just widens the financial gap between the big 2 and everybody else. If Rangers and Celtic would just piss off and play elsewhere (they could play each other every week, for all I care, I'm sure they'd LOVE that) the rest of the league in Scotland would actually be meaningful and would probably be a lot more entertaining than the kickfests we have to endure when Celtic play Rangers. Of course, there's no way either of the Old Firm would be allowed to play in England (as was suggested a couple of years back) because Police forces in England don't want the trouble that comes with them.
Simmo86 Posted 3 March 2011 Posted 3 March 2011 Some good suggestions in the thread. It's not scary, it's the best thing I've ever experienced at a football match. Get yourself into the respective boozer of the team you're supporting early on, then hit up Parkhead/The bigot dome and sing your heart out. Even when Celtic lost back in October/November it was absolutely brilliant. As for tonight's Old Firm game it was absolutely quality. The football was mediocre at best but the occasion was brilliant. Loved seeing Diouf and 2 of his colleagues getting sent off and seeing Parkhead bounding out You'll Never Walk Alone, This Land is Your Land and Celtic Symphony. Much better than God Save the Queen and "hello, hello" that the others sing. All-in-all it made me even more eager to get back to Parkhead for another game. Celtic for the treble! This, can't stand English people who think they 'must' support the lads from the bigot dome because they are British and don't mind singing "keep st. George in my heart" and "God save the queen." Really does my nut in. Yeah seems like your putting sectarian and religious bullshit aside!!
Bugg Posted 3 March 2011 Posted 3 March 2011 Completely agree, all wankers to a man. I can only assume the lad with the raspy voice in the second video is on a day trip with his carer. There again, are Rangers much better? Agreed, what kind of stupid fookers have Oakley's name on a flag?!?!
lcfc"weasel" Posted 3 March 2011 Posted 3 March 2011 Yeah seems like your putting sectarian and religious bullshit aside!! That's just based on there current fans rather than religion or sectarianism. I couldn't care whether the fan was a muslim, catholic, protestant, English, Scottish, Northern Irish, Irish or whatever, it makes no difference to me. EDIT:- Also, does the fact that I paid money to watch Hearts play in a game with no meaning really when Hearts are regularly called "mini-huns" show that I don't judge on religion or any other shite?

If the old firm sides split from the SPL, Scottish football would crumble. The other teams rely on the money they get when they play either of the big two that they couldn't stay afloat without it.

You do realise the irony of calling it "the bigot dome" whilst being a Celtic supporter, though, right? There's bigotry on both sides, there's a reason the rest of the SPL despise both Rangers and Celtic almost universally. It isn't envy.

I understand that both sides are just as bad as each other but from what I witnessed, Celtic were the far better side in that respect.
