Back whoever is in goal - says Chris Weale

Chris Weale is calling on the Blue Army to get behind whoever is given the nod as the Leicester City goalkeeper.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper earned a recall to the City side last weekend, and saved a penalty in the 3-3 Championship draw with Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

He had been axed in favour of former Portuguese national keeper Ricardo for the previous seven games, a decision which did not sit well with the Leicester fans, who loudly applauded his return to the team at the weekend.

But Weale said: "If you have a fellow professional playing in your position you want the crowd to support him but, of course, the fans pay their money and they are entitled to their opinion.

"It's nice to have the support of the fans but someone once told me that one third of supporters love you, one third of them hate you and one third don't give a monkey's for you, so you just get on with it."

1x1.GIFWeale said it had been disappointing to have been in the wilderness for the seven games and said only manager Sven-Goran Eriksson could answer the question whether he had done enough at Boro to keep the shirt for Saturday's home Championship clash with Burnley.

"It is part and parcel of being a professional and it has happened to me in my career now and again," said Weale.

"It is history now and it is about moving on. When you are out of the side you adapt your training a little, and mentally you have to stay sharp and keep positive and wait for your chance and, if it comes, then take it.

"I don't know if I will keep my place. You will have to ask the manager and for me it is just about the next game and preparing properly for it."

Weale said Saturday's high-scoring draw at Middlesbrough in an incident-packed game was a "very frustrating" experience with City leading 3-1 at one stage.

"We have scored three goals away from home and you would expect to win in that situation.

"They were going to throw everything at us and we were down to 10 men but it was still disappointing."

As reported in yesterday's Mercury, City striker Yakubu, a former Boro favourite, was able to offer some insider knowledge to Weale when it came to facing a penalty from Julio Arca during the second half of a pulsating contest.

Weale said: "Yes, the Yak helped and mentioned a few things. Conrad Logan (currently out on loan at Bristol Rovers) also told me a couple of things.

"I can't divulge them but he is also doing well at Bristol Rovers and has saved a couple of penalties so we are having a bit of a competition."

Fair point he makes there... I think myself a lot of other fans, were disappointed to see Weale dropped for no real reason (or for one that I can't remember of). So now he's had a game between the sticks, I'm happy to see a little competition for the #1 shirt.

Beating down any player with boos with time on the clock left, doesn't help your sides mental shape what-so-ever. It would be nice when Ricardo plays again if we could sing a positive song to him.

If Weale gets dropped for the next game he's finished at Leicester.

I'm a fan of Ricardo but you don't just drop a keeper the way Weale was.

His confidence must of been shot. Dropping him again would finish him off.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him at Hull next season.

Just keep shooting from outside the box when we play them next season then, easy wins.

We may as well wait for the summer when Sven will be after a new keeper. Until then, just cheer on whoever has the goalie's jersey.

it would of been more classy of Weale to say that BEFORE he got recalled, IE. after the 1st game when Ricardo was jeered

So this is basically Weale saying when he makes a mistake on Saturday don't abuse him like you did Ricardo.

Why?

He was dropped soon after the SheffU game (with only a 4-1 win over Barnsley inbetween) which was our goalkeeping performance of the season. Dropping him after Saturday just gone will make no difference.

We all know we need a new keeper for next year & one of the keepers we have is just about good enough to be our benchwarmer

Well said Chris, presumably the majority of the morons who call for an alternative during the game cant read, so unfortunately we can expect no change from the brainless, boo boy, sheep.

He won't get abused anyway, the fans are on his side.

Good of him to come out and say it but it's common sense really, don't boo your own fecking players during a game!
