purpleronnie Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 I love the playoffs but always felt sorry for teams finishing 3rd who get knocked out especially if they finish miles ahead on points. I know leicester have been promoted when they were 5th (if memory serves me correct?). I read in the non league paper written by the bognor manager who's team finished 31 points ahead of Dulwich, yet were beaten by Dulwich in the playoffs. They lost the league title by 1 goal on the final day. Dulwich actually finished closer to the relegation zone than they did to bognor. He suggests that the playoffs should be reduced to 3 teams and the team who finishes 2nd (or the highest play-off position) automatically gets to the final and home advantage. This perhaps woould only work at non league, just wondering what people thought?
FuriousFox46 Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 They're not fair. But God, they're exciting. I'm against the 3 team thing. They do a similar thing in Europe where 3 teams from the 2nd tier are in the play-offs and 1 team from the 1st tier... I think that would be better. But regardless, I don't think the system needs changing.
Guest NGoloMode Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 I think they're are great. Gives more teams a chance of promotion and adds to the excitement. Its a big league with 24 players and the play-offs mean more of those 24 have something to aim at.
Corky Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 You will get this sort of thing happen, but it's agreed at the start of the season that four teams (normally) will be in the play-offs and you've got to get on with it.
davieG Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 Money making scam but at least not as bad as the Rugby. and like the Rugby only exist because the fans pay up to attend.
Wymsey Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 Money making scam but at least not as bad as the Rugby. I concur. The Tigers were first in their league and yet they have to win the playoff semi + final in order to win the league trophy. Truly odd.
ScouseFox Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 They make the league a lot more exciting. Nobody in our league this year was really "mid-table" until the last two or three games, because if you're not looking over your shoulder, you're trying to get a run going to sneak into the play-offs. They're not fair, obviously, but everyone knows they're coming, and nobody who finishes 6th complains.
shen Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 Maybe use the system they use in curling. Translated into football this would result in 3rd playing 4th in a one-off, winner goes to the final and loser meets the winner of 5th v 6th for the other place in the final. So basically the two best-placed in the playoffs get at least two attempts to reach the final, the others just a single.
z-layrex Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 Even after what we all went through last season, I would say I love them the way they are.
Fox92 Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 Technically, they are not fair because the best three teams in the division deserve to win promotion, and they are the teams who are finish first, second and third. However, they are very exciting for everyone. That is why they should be and are intact. For example, our season, along with teams such as Burnley, Leeds and many more, would have been over ages before it actually was.
Zingari Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 promotion and relegation is not fair because the teams coming down might be better than those going up , they should scrap it and let the bottom 3 play the top 3 of each division in a mini league home and away to decide which are the best 3 teams only joking

Zingari Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 I believe that's how the play-offs were originally or at least along those lines. yes, originally the team that finished 3rd played the team that finished 3rd bottom
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 In Conference North and South, the team that finishes highest from the semi winners has the final at home. And below that level, the semis are one legged and played at the highest finished team. So that system is already sort of in place non league.
Alexikokopops Posted 9 May 2011 Posted 9 May 2011 What about a system whereby if the third place team finishes, say, at least 10 points above 4th they get automatic, otherwise it's play-offs?
