News of The World hacked Milly Dowler's voicemail

Yet more fun for our liver spotted Aussie chum, with the possibility of corporate charges supposedly in the pipeline:

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/jun/24/scotland-yard-want-interview-rupert-murdoch-phone-hacking

There's been some triumphant tweeting of the front page of the Sun this morning, to the point that I assumed it was a fake - 'A great day for the red tops' indeed.  Poor Andy Coulson is deleted from history, like the content of a lot of News International laptops and email servers, ho ho.  A more appropriate title would be a 'less shitty day for the red tops than we could have hoped for'.  'Fair and balanced', Rupert, as always.  Presumably if they were that confident that justice would be done they wouldn't have closed the News of the World down, but there you go.  Be interesting to see how they report today's events if Coulson is found guilty on the remaining charges.

I must confess to being surprised by the verdict on the Brooks....I thought that the hasty disposal of the laptop in the carpark was as damning as Coulson's 'do his phone' email, but perhaps Charlie Brooks was just trying to hide his dodgy porn collection after all, as he claimed.

The more you can pay for a lawyer, the more likely it is for you to be found not guilty.

Especially in the field of corporate law.

Well I think that's probably true, but there's no denying that Rebekah Brooks is no div (despite marrying Ross Kemp and having an affair with Andy Coulson); I'm not aware that she's ever put a foot wrong or even so much as looked uncomfortable either during the trial or the Leveson enquiry.  What next for the flame haired sociopath?  Exciting times in store

a poor result.

Poor old Andy Coulson. Had he been a bird I bet he walks. Was always a tough one for him here.

Who'd have thought being chums with the PM would have perks?

Only if you are a ginger bird it seems.

Bad news for Andy Coulson, terrific news if Large Al ever turns up at news international.

The PM (along with everyone else) was calling her for to resign around the time she fell on her sword, so I expect her getting cleared will make the dinner parties that bit more awkward, although from what Charlie Brooks was saying last night they've not been horseriding together recently.

The whole politicians and press thing is vomit inducing isn't it?  Blair gets so far into the Murdoch inner circle that he gets accused of shagging Wendi Deng (as if being godfather to her kid wasn't enough), Cameron and Rebekah Brooks send each other very cosy text messages and after all that's happened, the 3 tits sit there holding a copy of The Sun, with Ed Milliband doing one of the worst Girls Aloud smiles* I've ever seen.

BD, that Sideshow Beccy GIF is f***ing terrifying.  I have enough trouble sleeping as it is

*A term I invented meaning that although your mouth is in a smile shape, your eyes and every other part of your visage suggest you would rather be anywhere else on earth, as seen on most of the members of Girls Aloud most of the time and particularly the ginger one

Sorry to keep posting Guardian links, but for some reason it's the only paper that's covering this in any detail.

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/jun/25/-sp-phone-hacking-trial-rebekah-brooks-rupert-murdoch

It's a very long article but covers a lot of important points, and is by Nick Davies who is largely responsible for the whole sorry affair being blown open in the first place

No need for apologies, The Guardian is the last hope of any real reporting - Good Article.

Brooks will be running Limited News within months you can be sure.

Murdoch will continue to decide who governs Australia. the UK, and to a lesser (but increasing) extent, the US.

The only hope lies with the internet and the possible watering down of his influence, mind you if he gets control of channel ten here in Oz as he probably will soon...and increases his TV coverage in the UK. it looks we are still going to have our futures decided by this man.

A man whos personal mantra of "whatever it takes" .... has spread throughout his worldwide empire and is followed by his sycophantic, greedy editorial (and advertising) staff without question.

Just remember, if you read it in a News Limited publication it has been written with his influence and with his best interests at heart.

Hey look, Coulson's got 18 months

Don't worry though, because I'm pretty sure I read in a shit newspaper that prison's like a holiday camp

At the risk of sounding incredibly callous (I don't care though, because I think he's a massive c*** and I don't think he'd like me much either) he'll not go on forever.

As for his legacy, I only really know about James, who's reputation has taken a right battering over the last few years, but whether's he's been damaged enough for his influence to be limited I've no idea. Lachlan, the less controversial son is the older one anyway, but I must confess to not having a clue as to the extent of his involvement in the running of the evil empire

Well it was more than a few months but a remarkably prescient prediction or a weary inevitability?

And so it came to pass.

I was too depressed to post about Brooks' re-appointment but a crumb of comfort has come in the form of fellow defendant Mark Hanna, who although also acquitted has been cut adrift by Team Skeletor.  Yes, he's got an axe to grind and I hope he grinds it good:

Sadly it was indeed inevitable.

Will be interesting to see if this story ever sees the light of day... im going to guess the chap might suddenly find a new job (somewhere in the back blocks of News Ltd) or alternately will be the feature hatchet job in next weeks Sun.

On the upside, he is looking increasingly fragile and i really dont think the rest of the family will have anything near the power or influence that he has. Much like our other major media player in Oz, (the Packers) i can see the family slowly slipping away from newspapers once the old fella is gone.

Levi Bellfield admits killing Dowler, 14 years on.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-35419507

What an utter evil **** he is.  I hope he lives a long and miserable life in prison and dies a sad lonely old man behind bars.

Edit: Should add this was very close to home to me, I used to drink in bars where he worked (although don't recall him there were plenty of scum doormen around in the 90s), and pass the school daily, know well the place she was abducted.

What a sick, twisted, evil piece of shit. I'm not calling for the death penalty or anything but I can't think of a single good reason why he should remain alive. You can only hope that this brings some degree of closure to the family. She'd be in her mid twenties now if that evil cnut hadn't snuffed her life out for some twisted perverted reason.

Thought the name was Bellend at first. Very appropriate. Not a very nice person.

I know plenty of people (mostly work colleagues) whom I refer to as "bellends" but fortunately even they don't go around raping and murdering children. I think this guy is several levels beyond a "bellend"! But I see what you mean.

Although, apparently it's not his name now anyhow as he has converted to Islam and has a new name

This is amazing.

Now I couldn't give less of a chod about what he's done, I mean, who hasn't gone out with someone for 6 months after meeting them through internet dating before discovering they're a sex worker, but this is literally about a week since his department said it wasn't going to implement Leveson at the moment as it 'wasn't the right time' or something similarly woolly.  I can see what he meant now:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-36031743

Like all of you I'm confident that the tabloids that decided not to run the story did it out of kindness and definitely not to keep it as leverage over a person with the responsibility to implement some new rules they don't like.

My first instinct is that the spin doctors will struggle with this one, but at the same time despite it feeling like a bombshell, if recent experience is anything to go by it probably won't make any difference

It' s ok - hes already said that none of it affected the decisions he's made as culture secretary, so its got to be true right?
