  1. 1. Waghorn - Stay or Go?

It's looking increasingly likely that Waghorn's time is up at Leicester. He has gone from hero to zero in the space of a season!

I remember being very excited by his 2million signing and thinking we had signed a talented future Premiership striker after how good he looked on loan for us.

Since he signed though, I have begun to form a completely different opinion. His only real attribute now seems to be his work-rate.

I know people will say he hasn't been given a chance and we should stick with him but I think he has had more than enough time to force his way in to Sven's plans and just hasn't done it.

I also think the longer we hold on to him, the lower his asking price will drop. 1.5million seems steep now for a player I thought was well worth the 2million we paid last season.

I think this topic will be another "Fryatt"!! Seems like 50/50 split of those who think he can still do it for us, to those who have lost faith.

You're absolutely right pal, I was in dreamland on August 31st last year and was convinced he'd sort our season out. Just goes to show how delicate football success can be. Was his season with us on loan a flash in the pan?

First season he had the advantage of coming here with zero pressure and with a fearless attitude. Paying a fee of £2million is pretty high for someone who has only played 1 season in football and he's probably feeling the pressure of the price tag and raised expectations.

If he had shown me even a glimpse of what I loved about him in his first spell here then I would have said STAY but he just hasn't and I actually doubt he would do well elsewhere too now. He doesn't seem to have the skill any more and is just credited for his work rate.

Could be a confidence thing but I think Sven has been more than patient and didn't get rid of him when he had the chance last season.

1. He wasn't Sven signing.

2. Not been given a real run in the team.

3. He might not be good enough.

he also had a tendancy even under Pearson to be erratic and with broken confidence and a manager who has no loyalty to him, it spells the end for him here. Shame but we've got to be ruthless in order to achieve what all of our fans want.

Eighteen month's ago Waghorn was the dog's. If he could recover that type of form, he'd be on for 20 goals per season and we wouldn't need to splash £5m on a striker like Maynard.

But he's badly out of touch right now. This is something that can affect any striker - ask Fernando Torres.

I'm not sure Sven will be the manager to rebuild his confidence. The 4-3-3 system we play to accommodate Gallagher, Wellens and King doesn't really suit his style.

I wish him all the best for the coming season, but fear that he'll be gone by the end of the transfer window.

It's all in the system and set up. Under pearson we played 4-4-2 and waghorn looked good in that set up but under sven we play 4-3-3 and waghorn isn't a lone striker or winger so doesn't fit in,

Yep, I had my doubts when we signed him as I didn't see him as a Sousa type player.

He had chances last season.

He's had chances in friendlies this season and from all accounts has been poor.

If we're after automatic promotion then I don't see that we can afford to give him 6 games as the main striker in the hope that, given another chance, this time it will work,

I'd like to keep him if I could - I think he's just not been given enough chances to shine last season.

I hope I'm wrong and Sven won't sell him (be it as mentioned in the likely/unlikely Maynard deal or in any other case).

But maybe a loan deal would do him some good...?

He scored 12 goals in 43 games under Pearson... Prolific compared to the 5 or so preceding years, but pretty far from world beating.

Pearson had an organised system with specific goals for each player, it's obviously works for some players & not for others. Its just a different style. Waghorn, Hobbs and others looked pretty damn good players under that style, but not so good under a more expressive, quick & flexible style.

He obviously didn't do enough to earn many starting paces last season, but I do think it was a mistake not to introduce him to games at around the 60min mark, would have been a good way to build up his confidence and enable him to adapt to our new style. Bringing him on in the late 80's minutes did nothing other than run the clock down, break up opposition momentum

Waghorn hasn't done anything wrong, it's just a change of circumstances around him. Its a shame, nothing less & certainly nothing more.

It was about 15 games in the championship, average players can have a run of form for that long that makes them look a lot better than they are, seems to happen even more so on loan.

He just isnt that good unfortunately, if he actually did have the talent to make it as a premiership footballer Sunderland wouldnt of been letting him go for £2million.

I thought he was great under Pearson but I have seen enough football now for years to know loan signings can go sour when you sign them permanently on a long contract and the instant desire to impress goes out the window.

He has made no real impression on Sven hence little game time or he would be playing him.

Sven see's him day in day out at training not just 90 mins on match day.

Sven has to take us up this year and why carry a passenger you don't intend playing.

Also if he can't cut it down here he has no chance nxt yr if we do get up.

Let him go to build his future.

Sven started Waghorn in 5 of his first 6 matches at the club which I guess pretty much put the nail in the coffin as he didnt score in any of those games.

He should have been confident going into these games as he scored away at Norwich, plus in the next match against Scunthorpe and was ahead of Fryatt in the pecking order.

Waghorn is a nice lad, but he isnt going to fire us into the Premier League, maybe Schlupp just might be a better prospect. If so; the time is right to cash in on Waghorn when we find that proven goalscorer! We have also signed Nugent in the summer and he may score a similar amount of goals as Waghorn would in a full season.

With just 5 places on the bench this season, Waghorn may struggle to make the bench most weeks, let alone the team.

On loan he was superb, his scoring record was respectable and he was a good outlet.

Maybe it's the price tag or change of manager so quickly after joining but he looks as though he tries too hard and needs to relax a bit.

Posted

Top player when he is full of confidence, unfortunately sven/ sousa seems to have knocked it out of him.....when he was at Sunderland they strongly felt he would be in their first team in a few years, it was only the money that got him, unforunately I cant see him getting back to his best sat on our bench, so a loan looks on the cards, hopefully he will show what he has got once more

Posted

Seems to concentrate on increasing his bulkness and strength than anything else, needs to work on technical stuff as well. Is there a possibility of becoming too bulky?

I like him, I like his effort and never comes across as lacking in confidence in my opinion. can't see a future for him here though.

I see few people talking about a loan deal. That could work but are we just clinging on by doing that??

Like I said I think his value is dropping fast. Valued at 1.5 Million. I see that dipping under a million if he continues on this poor form.

I think the smart thing would be to cash in now while there are still some clubs interested

Posted

He also seems to have put on a sh1t load of muscle since his breakthrough season on loan with us...maybe this has a bearing on his movement flexability etc??...maybe not?...just a thought.

haha I actually had the same thought! He looks less agile when he is built like that!!

Writing off a young lad after barely playing last season. Some of our fans are laughable. It sounds like your leading up for when he goes elsewhere so you can go on their forums; 'he's crap, we don't want him'

(In the same bitter way fans of other clubs have spoke of their players that we've acquired.

As someone has said- he's not turned shit, the circumstances nf the team have changed and that IMO has affected him. Its very possible the penalty at cardiff is still playing on him too. Who knows. He just needs a proper chance. I think he'd do better if sven said- 'you'll be one of the 1st players down on the team sheet, bar injury etc'

That may make him relax a little and get back in to scoring again

I would say writing him off is just the same extreme as thinking he is a great player after one season and 12 goals on loan for us.

For me, I'm not writing him off. Just don't think we have time to wait for him. I think Sven has given him a season to prove himself in training and on the pitch!!

You should earn your time on the pitch. People think players have a right to start games just to give them a fair chance! I don't!
