RonnieTodger Posted 22 August 2011 Posted 22 August 2011 To think we were labelled as likely to go up as West Ham is very surprising in my opinion, just because we had spent big and had a "great" squad on paper. The only improvements are that half the squad isn't on loan. The best XI towards the end of last year was probably: Weale Naughton Bamba Bruma Van Aanholt Wellens King Abe Vassell Yakubu Gallagher. Compare that to: Schmeichel Pantsil/Peltier Mills Bamba Konchesky Wellens King Fernandes Danns Nugent Vassell. I know we have a lot more strength in depth. But we wouldn't expect a win every week towards the end of last season, so why do we now?
Raj Posted 22 August 2011 Posted 22 August 2011 Just taking the Gk into account and we are already an improvement. Weale proved his'worth' after his flap on sat!!
RonnieTodger Posted 22 August 2011 Author Posted 22 August 2011 Yeah, I forgot to mention that. I think Kasper is the main improvement. But other than that, I can't really see any. Maybe Fernandes?
David Guiza Posted 22 August 2011 Posted 22 August 2011 Naughton for Pantsil and Yakubu for Vassell are the only changes I'd make. And that's not to say Pantsil is not more than capable either, just that we all know how good Naughton is. Also it still appears we'll sign another partner for Nugent anyway, who may be better than Yak or even Yak himself. I don't think you can compare two teams after 4 games anyway, especially when we've made changes every game.
leicesterseddon Posted 22 August 2011 Posted 22 August 2011 Kasper is an improvement on Weale, Konchesky is an improvement on PVA (apart from fading against Forest, I don't think he's played that badly for us, and PVA was a massive liability in defence). Also I think in time Mills will prove better than Bruma in the long-run, although obviously he hasn't made an amazing start. Other than that though you do have a point. Personally I'm hoping Johnson proves his worth once he gets back to full fitness. Also I do think we will sign a striker, perhaps on loan but I do think we will get someone... Also Danns showed on Saturday what he can do - I also think he's got to be better than Gallagher
Corky Posted 22 August 2011 Posted 22 August 2011 Naughton's natural attacking style is missed currently, that's one less option going forward (Pantsil and Peltier aren't bad players but don't have the pace of Naughton). We do need a Yakubu-type predator in the box. Other than that I think we're stronger.
cc_star Posted 22 August 2011 Posted 22 August 2011 Only a limited threat from fullbacks this season Defence still conceeding but have now lost the ability to play from the back The midfield not only still can't control games but now aren't creating chances either And we have one forward worthy of top half IMO we're massively weaker, signing a foward won't make a difference to a defence which concedes & a midfield which can't create. Sven has also compromised King Forest mistakes for the two goals aside, we did & created nothing... And they were freakin awful
ithuriel Posted 22 August 2011 Posted 22 August 2011 The forward line need's adding to, and the team still has not gelled properly. The defence should be ok if Sven can stop from constantly changing it and the midfield is not to bad but maybe lacks width. This season we will see if Sven still has it but thing's look a bit jittery thus far.
Babylon Posted 22 August 2011 Posted 22 August 2011 I'll let you know when they've actually had a chance to get to know each other.
Tielemans63 Posted 22 August 2011 Posted 22 August 2011 Well we didn't own 3 of the back 4 so we're better off already. I thought we played really well on sat until Mr Moss went mad. Thought Danns was terrific.
Ric Flair Posted 22 August 2011 Posted 22 August 2011 This squad of players is very good, i've no qualms about the ability of our team it's whther our manager is given the time to turn us in to a quality outfit. Our fans are likely to fook that up though if they continue as they did during our last two home games. This is subject to us bringing in one or two players and getting rid of the deadwood to balance the harmony amongst the squad. Naughton is badly missed at present, but for his attacking attributes mainly and Yakubu was a massive threat, which Nugent is proving to be equally as dangerous but he definitely needs someone alongside him.
Tielemans63 Posted 22 August 2011 Posted 22 August 2011 Couldn't agree more Ric, it's easily one of the strongest squad in the league, the question is whether Svennis can inspire them and find the right balance. I think he will do I just hope it's sooner rather than later.
Guest Col city fan Posted 22 August 2011 Posted 22 August 2011 It's just too soon to say.... Just because you can compare players like for like, position for position it doesn't mean you can compare them as a collective... As a TEAM Give it till Christmas and we will know.....

How can our squad of players be "very good" when our striking potential is so limited? To be very good we need strikers.
