FoxesAreBlue Posted 8 October 2011 Posted 8 October 2011 I dont know all the hard facts and stats for either but based on what I've seen, I say Schmeichel, mate says otherwise.
The Doctor Posted 8 October 2011 Posted 8 October 2011 Difficult question - I'd say Oli Kahn was slightly better.
Salieri Posted 8 October 2011 Posted 8 October 2011 WEEEEEEEEULLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!! On a serious note, i'd have to say Joe Corrigan.
Tielemans63 Posted 8 October 2011 Posted 8 October 2011 Peter Schmeichel was definitely slightly less of a cvnt than Oli Kahn. On a serious note, I'd say PS as he didn't have a tendency to single-handedly destroy team spirit like Kahn did.
Libertine Dream Posted 8 October 2011 Posted 8 October 2011 Schmeichel all day long. But Id have Van Der Sar over both of them, prefer steady keepers
Guest Basildon Fox Posted 8 October 2011 Posted 8 October 2011 Difficult question - I'd say Oli Kahn was slightly better. Khan was a good keeper. The difference is that Schmeichel will go down as one of the greatest keepers ever. It is a major mis-match to even think about putting them on the same level. Now. Shilts V Schmeichel who was better?
Guest Basildon Fox Posted 8 October 2011 Posted 8 October 2011 Schmeichel all day long. But Id have Van Der Sar over both of them, prefer steady keepers Van Der Sar - Great Keeper < Schmeichel - One of the best ever.
The Doctor Posted 9 October 2011 Posted 9 October 2011 trav's right mind - zoff was better than either of these two. edit: Yashin was better than anyone else though.
shen Posted 9 October 2011 Posted 9 October 2011 It's so difficult to compare keepers across generations, with the style of football (literally and figuratively) changing so much. I'm sure a big part of what made Kahn and Schmeichel legendary, was their personalities and the presence they had on the pitch. I think those two were more or less on par. While Kahn won the Golden Ball in the 2002 WC, I don't remember a more outstanding tournament performance than Schmeichel's in the 1992 ECs. He almost won that tournament. If Kahn hadn't been at fault in the 2002 final, or if Schmeichel hadn't been sub-par against Brazil in the 1998 quarterfinals, then I wouldn't be fence-sitting.That said, I think someone like Casillas is probably superior to both of them. Won everything there is to win, has been Real Madrid's and Spain's undisputed number one for over a decade and has a staggering 125 caps at the age of 30(!). Some would argue he is just coming into his prime now...

Some would argue he is just coming into his prime now... I don't agree with that. Raul could also boast similar figures, had the best CL goalscoring record, mainstay for Real and Spain, won loads of medals, but was he the best striker? Never in a million years. Casillas is a fine keeper but lacks the presence of PS or OK.
Guest ttfn Posted 9 October 2011 Posted 9 October 2011 trav's right mind - zoff was better than either of these two. edit: Yashin was better than anyone else though. Based on what? They played in different generations; there was a great article in FourFourTwo a couple of months back about how much goalkeeping has changed over the last 20 years, specifically since the introduction of the back-pass rule. Also I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that you won't have had much more than a few minutes of footage and a lot of rose-tinted hearsay on which to form your opinion about Yashin: a man who, due to playing in the Soviet Union for his entire career, gained limited exposure in the UK even to those old enough to have been his contemporaries. At least the Schmeichel v Kahn comparison is worth making, even if (in my opinion, others are available) it's a bit of a mis-match. Comparing players across generations, particularly with such certainty, is a mug's game.

Casillas is a fine keeper but lacks the presence of PS or OK. I think Raul is one of the finest strikers Spain has ever produced, but that is another debate. As for presence, I did address that as well, but I don't think a goalkeeper has to have 'presence' (read a flamboyant personality) to be a great. Zoff is a perfect example in that respect. I've heard and read players talk numerous amounts of times about their fear of the likes of Buffon and Casillas, because they were so so good. Casillas' CV speaks for itself and frankly, so do his consistent performances.
Guest ttfn Posted 9 October 2011 Posted 9 October 2011 Bert Trautmann. William "Fatty" Foulke It goes without saying that I've not seen anything of him and he played 100 years ago, but I can categorically say that he was the greatest.
Haydos Posted 10 October 2011 Posted 10 October 2011 I don't agree with that. Maybe not best players as he is fairly limited compared to someone like Ronaldo but undeniably one of the best strikers of his generation.
welck12 Posted 10 October 2011 Posted 10 October 2011 Greatest ever, shame he didnt get to really show off his talents in europe
