Fox92 Posted 12 October 2011 Posted 12 October 2011 Wellens is a type of player that needs to be free, he isn't a defensive midfielder, he is a player that can control the speed of the game. He can stop the ball dead and still pick the right pass, and he is the best at that (look at Hull away last season as an example, he stopped play, stood on the ball and picked out a fine ball to Vassell who scored). He can easily slow the game down, but also pick the right pass when its on. Look back at last season; Naughton's goal v Doncaster, King's goal v Derby are both prime examples that when the pass is on Wellens will find it. It takes two to create though, if nobody is making the runs, he can't create. Maybe he needs better players around him, I've seen that happen before with other players. I find it ridiculous that somebody feared Wellens coming back. As a fan, you should want all of the players fit.

He is virtually an everpresent, apart from a game or two under Sousa he starts pretty much every game. look at his appearance record, he misses very, very few games. During our great run of results in January and February Wellens played pretty much every game, we were pretty damn good at that time and Wellens really looked the business, good enough to get him 'Fans player of the season', despite what came next. But from March till the end of the season, against better sides admitedly, we were poor and Wellens woeful. This makes it difficult to say, with any certainty, whether we play better or worse with him in the side, put simple does he only really shine when the team is playing well or, conversly does the team only really play well when he is on song. My own view on this is pretty well known, so over to you.......
Libertine Posted 12 October 2011 Posted 12 October 2011 I'm not anti-Wellens really, I think he's a good option to have, but I really don't want him starting. Johnson is basically the same type of player but much better. Though for now I'd keep the same midfield as Derby.

Wasn't really a vintage year for Leicester was it? He had 3 good months with the other 6 being meh... There's no point going over all this bollocks again anyway, the last game proved we're so much better without and hopefully the forthcoming games will cement this view

And last season he got more votes that Naughton so he must have done a lot right in a lot of people's eyes. Truth is that in order to appreciate Wellens you have to understand that not everyone is the on the pitch to do the glamorous things in a game. Wellens in an engine room, someone you can build a team around. He wins the ball back, always makes himself available to receive and distributes on the whole with great accuracy and vision. Any LCFC team without him is all the weaker for it.
