Matt Posted 27 October 2011 Posted 27 October 2011 If the standard of refereeing is as bad as in this country it does not surprise me, It does surprise me that it doesn't happen more often though, in heat of the moment kind of thing. Respect the ref? No, no, no, you earn respect.
marko Posted 27 October 2011 Posted 27 October 2011 And he decides to do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjS51Mfynkc Saddening. Looks terminal to me.
The Doctor Posted 27 October 2011 Posted 27 October 2011 Hardly a brutal attack - one ****ing punch. And I agree with Matt - refs need to earn respect rather than expect it to be given to them automatically.
RowlattsFox Posted 27 October 2011 Posted 27 October 2011 Are people actually justifying a player punching a ref in the face, because he may have made a wrong decision Imagine if that player was John Terry, or any other 'big name' player for that matter.
lcfcadam Posted 27 October 2011 Posted 27 October 2011 P.S. apparently he decided to retire after doing this because he was so upset with himself. And to be fair punching the ref in the face is completely unacceptable regardless of any decisions he's made. You don't need to "earn any respect" in order to make sure you're not assaulted by a fellow bloke. Although as some people have already pointed out, "brutal" is definitely not the right term...
lcfcadam Posted 27 October 2011 Posted 27 October 2011 Don't really understand how that's related in the slightest. Players go for other players all the time, whereas most of the time they're intelligent enough not to do the same to officials...

I don't think anyone is justifying it, you can't do that anywhere, whether on a football pitch or not. If a player punches an opponent, a team mate, an official or a fan he needs to be punished accordingly I think the point Matt made about earning respect is true. You would never see a player pushing or punching Collina a few years ago or Howard Webb now. These referees have earned the respect of the players and the fans. They should not be exceptions, Webb referees at a standard at which all top level referees should be achieving, but so few come close. In my job I deal with many inept people and it annoys me. I know if my job was in such a highly charged emotional situation like a football match I would have trouble holding back my frustration. Howard Webb should be the rule, not the exception.

Finnegan Posted 28 October 2011 Posted 28 October 2011 Don't see the fuss, he didn't even KO the ref. Ladies and gentlemen, Bert from Tudor Road.
Guest Bilo Posted 28 October 2011 Posted 28 October 2011 I'm more 'shocked and disgusted' by how girly a punch that was.

And so if a referee that you respect is officiating at a Leicester match and they make an important decision you disagree with you're going to sit there and be quiet and not shout? Behave...
The Doctor Posted 28 October 2011 Posted 28 October 2011 ****ing hell youtube is run by absolute pansies.
Matt Posted 28 October 2011 Posted 28 October 2011 And so if a referee that you respect is officiating at a Leicester match and they make an important decision you disagree with you're going to sit there and be quiet and not shout? Behave... Actually, if you look back at my posts, referee's regardless of whether I respect them or not if they make the right decisions i'll take it on the chin. Something that really annoys me is when people blame the referee's decision for us losing the game, especially when a) We were poor and didn't deserve anything anyway and 2) When the correct decisions the referee made are put down to us losing the game and ultimatly in some people's eyes the referee's fault. I just want refereeing to be right, hard job I understand, human error occurs, I accept that but more and more blatent incidents are happening and officaiting is getting worse, even the best referees that I do respect (And that's not many) make mistakes but they make alot less mistake then a whole, and 1 or 2 can be accepted, but on a whole referees make repeated mistakes and ruin games. Talking of poor referees is Stuart Atwell still officiating? Or has he been sacked, not noticed him/heard of some pathetic fuck up caused by him for a while.

Soccerbase Attwell's been refereeing, must be keeping his head down, or had some retraining in the summer.

No, but his dad Martin Atwell is a referee in my U16 league and you can see it runs In the family. He booked 6 of our players for no apparent reason without giving an explanation, one was for "dangerous play" when our defender chipped the ball over a slide tackle. Sent both of our managers off and made then watch the game from the car park and then one player got a straight red for a 50/50 challenge. Madness.
ozleicester Posted 3 November 2011 Posted 3 November 2011 Earning the respect is BULSH1T!!. He/She is the ref.. the official, you will accept their decision! If you dont accept this, then dont play, its a basic tenant of the game. The sooner they start sending players off when they start surrounding the ref, the sooner it will stop. Refs make mistakes...they are human and whats goes around comes around.
DB11 Posted 4 November 2011 Author Posted 4 November 2011 Refs make mistakes...they are human and whats goes around comes around. This. The season that we got relegated from the Championship it appeared that a few decisions went against us but, blimey, in League One we got so many decisions in our favour that it was ridiculous! I quite liked being the big club that got the decisions (ala Man Utd) for a year!
MrSpaM Posted 4 November 2011 Posted 4 November 2011 ahhhh how i miss the "Respect the ref, your having a laugh" chant
