Bands whose first album was their weakest?

Recommended Posts

Most of the time, a band's first album tends to also be their strongest, or at least ONE of their strongest. Who do you regard as exceptions to the rule?

I'd definitely say blur's debut was their weakest.

The Horrors would qualify, I think.

Also, while it's not his weakest, I'd say Neil Young's self titled debut was nowhere near as good as most of the albums that followed it. Granted, he had a "lesser" period in the eighties, but still, he made at least 20 albums better than his debut.

I have to post the tiniest picture of this possible and hope nobody notices, 'cos I may have to hand my Punk card back in if they do.

Not sure about their absolute worst but, eh, well. Let's just say they got better.

Whilst the above is not a bad album, they grew up a hell of a lot in 3 years and didn't look back.

:o NO WAY!

NO. SLEEP. TIL BROOKLYN!

Happens to be my favourite album of theirs.

lol I knew I'd get that reaction off someone.

empire? - WRPLA is by far and away the best, but I'd put Kasabian in 2nd.

WRPLA, Empire, Velociraptor then Kasabian for me.

Apart from LSF and Club foot the rest of it is horrendous. All so different though so suppose it's one that's really up for discussion.

Disagree with Kasabian, probably haven't listened to the others quite so much as I should have but it's definitely not their worst.

This is easily a very clear cut one for me...

Bleach is by far the best Nirvana album.

Kasabian is the only album by them I listen to.

This was a poor debut compared to what was to come

OOOH! Good call! I'm jumping ship to this one.

One decent song on that album and almost unrecognisable as the Radiohead we know and love today.

The only album of their that isn't absolutely essential

I think ALL their albums are essential, including the "not proper album" ones, BUT, if pushed, I would have to agree that the 3 albums that followed it were better ones.

Being an 80s music listener, can think of only two or three:-

Talk Talk's Party's Over, before they became pioneers of post-rock

Depeche Mode's Speak and Spell - although I quite like it and listen to it as if I was back in '81 - so appreciate it a bit more, but sounds so dated now - and it is quite 'camp'

Japan's Adolescent Sex : glam-rock rubbish, before they found their feet an album later

Was.. going to say The Clash's self-titled album - which I'm not the greatest fan of and love their more electronica/reggae/dub stuff, BUT, forgot they wrote Cut The Crap - why the fook Strummer sacked Jones I'll never know for that rubbish last album.

You clearly haven't heard Welcome The Night then. Plus you were there when they reformed with just Kris and a violin. Terrible.
