AoWW Posted 2 December 2011 Posted 2 December 2011 Ok, so I readily admit that's it a genre I know nothing about... which is why I'm looking for some suggestions from the good folks of FT. (milktray, I'm looking at you!) I'm planning an art day for Year 8s based on the young, black artist Chris Ofili. Much of his work is inspired by rap music and to 'set the scene' for the day I'd like to have suitable music playing, but I'm conscious of the fact that lots of music from this genre isn't appropriate for this age group. (Yeah, yeah, I know they'll listen to all sorts at home, but I have to be seen to be 'being responsible'.) Question is, is there rap out there that's not too toe-curling in its subject-matter or language? (I've already got to get round the issue of selecting an artist whose work encompasses blasphemy, prostitution, phallic representations of black cocks, female genitalia, elephant shit and political-imagery! I could do without parents complaining that their little angels have been subjected to foul language too!)
Trav Le Bleu Posted 2 December 2011 Posted 2 December 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08X5CVfL0bk&feature=related And given the subject matter, this classic is a must surely? I know, I'm old skool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGAWSAuiYug Top choon.

Samilktray Posted 4 December 2011 Posted 4 December 2011 Why dont you download the Clean Edits of the albums? I think Tribe Called Quest is a good shout though, and a lot of KanYe West's music would be decent too. I must say I did struggle with this though
Adster Posted 8 December 2011 Posted 8 December 2011  Got me addicted to this song again now, thanks a lot
BoneDog Posted 8 December 2011 Posted 8 December 2011 Since I quit the crack I dig a bit of Ricky B. Christian positive rap yo with no cussin n shit. Kids'll love these beats
General Smuts Posted 8 December 2011 Posted 8 December 2011 I think Tyler The Creator's inspirational lyrics would set 12 year olds on the right path. 'Rape a pregnant bitch and tell my friends I had a threesome'. Delightful,
Nick Posted 8 December 2011 Posted 8 December 2011 Trav got there first with my suggestion which would have been the album '3 feet high and rising' by De La Soul: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0irL1M15DH8 And if she wants an example of an an incredible female MC...... here's one to throw into the mix...... live:
James. Posted 8 December 2011 Posted 8 December 2011 Jurassic 5? They even have a track (their best one) called Concrete Schoolyard.
Finnegan Posted 8 December 2011 Posted 8 December 2011 Why dont you download the Clean Edits of the albums? I think Tribe Called Quest is a good shout though, and a lot of KanYe West's music would be decent too. I must say I did struggle with this though The clean version of Lil Jon's Crunkest Hits is probably the funniest thing I have ever heard.
