Gelson Fernandes

This may sound silly to some but in today's reserve game he netted 4 and it got me thinking if we were playing him too deep to influence a game. I know some will say it was only Notts County but is it something to consider pushing him up the pitch a bit? :dunno:

I thought this against Forest, reminded me of Yaya Toure when he marauded forward :P

Was he playing as a winger by any chance?

We weren't playing him too deep, we were plaing him too far forward.

He should be playing in a holding midfield role and Sven was generally playing him on the right of the diamond and further forward than Wellens and sometimes King as well.

Cracking player IMO and we need to utilise him, 4 goals in one game speaks volumes for me, no defensive midfielder scores that in a game.

Like Haydos said, when he had that freedom role against forest he scored and set up Nugent. He isn't a holding player IMO, he's far to rugged and energetic to be stuck in front of the back four. I would be a little disappointed if he doesn't start on saturday.

First question is, Does he want to be here?

If he wants to play then his position is obvious, he needs to play alongside King anchoring the midfield.......

Both are first class defensively and both will get forward, King with his 'give and go' and late runs, Fernandes can power forward with the ball at his feet and provide the midfield presence that King lacks, they should compliment each other well.

Not exactly defensive players but with the responsibility of shielding the back 4 as their primary role. To me it is so obvious that I find it hard to see why it has not been tried.

Fernandes's reputation was built playing exactly that role for Citeh, in the Premier League and he was pretty good at it, surely it is worth a go?

He's obviously more than a defensive midfielder, maybe he's a lot like King?

IMO could fill a similar role to Kingy but he's a lot more athletic and more of a ball carrier :dunno:

But that is exactly what defensive midfielders should be.

He's not someone who should be played further forward because he's very good at the defensive side in a way no other player we have is.

But he's not a dribbler and can't shoot or pick a great pass. He created both of those goals at Forest by intercepting/tackling, and that is his game. He's wasted by not being played to his stengths. Just because he's strong and energetic it doesn't mean he should be playing further forward.

You see Busquets, Khedira or Alonso playing as CDM for their clubs and country's respectively but don't have the desire to attack and put their weight around for the team like Fernandes does. Yes, I might be wrong, but why not give him a chance alongside King in the middle.

King's shown his quality's defensively which a lot of people didn't think he had so why can't Fernandes be given a go more attacking to see what he can do. Nothing against Peterborough but this is a great opportunity to give him or any other player like Johnson ago this weekend. We can't rely on Wellens and King all season.

As dave said they could play together.

They aren't too similar, King isn't as strong in the middle of the park where Fernandes would be.

He has got a bit of the Yaya Toure's about him.

Can see him being more involved. NP's type of player

A few weeks ago I posted that Gelson could do a Robbie style job, as he did against Cov in the first match this season, although a vigorous defensive midfield role like Scott Parker does have it's appeal. Whichever, drop Wellens and put him in anyway.

I love the fact Fernandes asked to play in the reserve match even though he wasn't meant to be involved. He seems to have a great attitude. Hopefully his performance will get him a start on Saturday.

i hope he does and play the position he did in reserves as he scored 4. admittedly it was a reserve game but scoring gives confidence and we need that in the team so others can feed off it

Apparently he asked o play today, I'd say that shows he wants to be here.

Didn't know this, at the time of posting anyway......

He has only been a bit part player for us so far but if he wants to get involved I would get him in the side straight away, in one of the 'anchor' roles as mentioned above. He has the power and the energy to bring the ball out of defence or to drive at a set defence, something neither King nor Wellens can do.

Defensively he provides the kind of physical presence in midfield that we have not seen at City for a very long time, should compliment King's more considered style nicely.

Given his performances at Citeh a couple of seasons ago, in the Premier League, I simply can not understand why this has not been tried.....

Obvious thing to do but I don't think you are actually allowed to say that......

A thorough mauling from 'the fox' is coming your way........:P

Never understood why he hasn't been given much of a chance away from the wings

He played on the wing quite a few times for Switzerland and didn't do a bad job.
