Ric Flair Posted 3 January 2012 Posted 3 January 2012 I cannot believe what i've been reading on here about Beckford's performance yesterday. If it wasn't for him, Palace would have put far more pressure on us once Howard had been sent off. Jermaine cleverly lead the line, forcing Palace to elave defenders back instead of pushing up the pitch if he'd have tracked all the way back and got behind the ball, like the mongols wanted him to do. He also had two brilliant individual runs and looked as lively as i've seen him. Maybe not showing anything like what we've paid for him, but let's give the lad some credit when he deserves it. I hope he does well here, he has some talent in there I know he has. Well done yesterday Beckford, tidy cameo.
StanSP Posted 3 January 2012 Posted 3 January 2012 Agree with you. Same vs Ipswich as well. Beckford was the better than Nugent that day (it was probably Nugent's worse performance in a City shirt) and yet Beckford gets ironically cheered when he comes off and Nugent gets no slack whatsoever. People are so harsh on Beckford right now. He's doing nothing wrong. Lay off him, please!
Happy Fox Posted 3 January 2012 Posted 3 January 2012 Like I said before I will not judge Beckford till we get some wingers in and a playmaker then with that amount of service he will score more goals no doubt about it. A suggestion to the conventional 4-4-2, Beckford needs to play with a target man so we definitely need one as Howard isn't cut out for this level anymore.
jonlcfc1990 Posted 3 January 2012 Posted 3 January 2012 I feel really bad for Beckford only a cameo role just like at Doncaster and yet i think he needs time with i'd say Schlupp to give him someone to work with. It's just really bad luck that thanks to a moronic Howard moment he had to spend 20 minutes defending instead of trying to secure the game.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 3 January 2012 Posted 3 January 2012 Beckford seems to play so much better off the bench than starting and yesterday the crowd sang his name and really got behind him.# Shame he couldnt finish once chance but nevermind.
stockyfox Posted 3 January 2012 Posted 3 January 2012 One player who can make Beckford is Luciano Becchio. The two go together like peaches and cream, fish and chips, bread and butter, Gibson and Stringfellow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guest Col city fan Posted 3 January 2012 Posted 3 January 2012 Despite any of this I still can't help thinking Beckfords 'for the off'...
Guest ttfn Posted 3 January 2012 Posted 3 January 2012 It's not his fault we were down to 10 but he should have worked harder to stop their centre backs getting the ball forward so quickly. Not sure that anything he did was particularly clever. He just sat on the shoulder waiting for the ball over the top, as usual. The difference was that, as Palace were losing and we were down to 10, they only had 2 defenders back for him to beat to the ball. Not a poor cameo by any means, but it was hardly anything to rave about either. It speaks volumes for just how poor he's been that this thread even exists on the back of yesterday's display.

Same against Pompey when he came on Was dangerous Had 2 particularly brilliant runs & shots, 1 of them was a brilliant save Yesterday from the stream I was watching, Nugent was doing absolutely nothing, just wasn't making himself available for a pass. Schlupp had faded, when Beckford came on he received the ball & ran at them which relieved the constant pressure. People just seem blind to what actually happens on the pitch & just see what suits their personal feeling/agenda
LloydDyer Posted 3 January 2012 Posted 3 January 2012 Wow this is the first thing i've ever read about people LIKING Jermaine Beckford, and I totally agree WE NEED HIM. I hear a lot of fans on twitter slating him, for those of you who watched Pompey match on TV, I quote from Gary McAllister "he is a natural goalscorer" now if he says that I believe him. He also said he needs the service and he will deliver, if Beckford doesn't like it to his feet then put in a through ball!! He is the key to our promotion and NP needs to see this, he's faster and better than Nugent (okay his goalscoring record for Leicester doesn't help) but he did excellent for Leeds and Everton, when he skipped a division, so fans saying he's shit and useless need there head checking when he's clearly not.
ithuriel Posted 3 January 2012 Posted 3 January 2012 He has improved under Nigel but he still is not scoring. Maybe Nigel can turn him round but can we afford to have a striker on the bench, taking a nice wage if they are not doing what they we're brought for? If we get another striker in he might feel the urge to move on, January is certainly full of if's and but's.

People like Beckford i'm sure of it he gets a better reception away from home too it was the same with ricardo he couldn't hold on for 90mins against QPR last season but he made some great stops and looked confident and then the next home game he was booed to the point were he put his arm up while taking a goal kick almost as if to say "yeah i get it " it was a real shame players need confidence i dont know why our fans seem to berate players lately. in my opinion it seems to be the people who also go the ground sit down all game and just moan moan moan until it's time to go home and i'm sick of it!
ithuriel Posted 3 January 2012 Posted 3 January 2012 You ignore the fact he showed improvement at our last home match and he was not booed. You also ignore the fact he got slated away earlier in the season. Then again do not let fact's get in the way of this theory

This is referring to Howard, whose job it is to score, win headers and hold the ball up, right? Cause he does none of them, Beckford is a much better option to have. Howard is the only wasted place on the bench when it comes to strikers.

Then again do not let fact's get in the way of this theory All i'm saying is at home when there are more people who have come to watch leicester the fans turn a lot faster when certain players aren't performing well or lacking in a department where as away support is a lot more constructive and moral boosting. The "atmosphere" at the kp has been talked about to death so i won't go into that all i'm saying is maybe if we start chanting his name and get behind him before he scores he might just get that lift he needs.
somebum Posted 3 January 2012 Posted 3 January 2012 One good jump does not make a showhorse, but yeah, he did ok
Corky Posted 3 January 2012 Posted 3 January 2012 I thought Beckford looked good when he played on Saturday. Had a couple of testing shots and was at one point out on the wing offering Schmeichel an early ball upfield, which was ignored, but at least he was giving a viable option.

I personally think that the fans have actually been amazingly patient with Beckford. His goals tally is shocking. Beckford is one of those players that the fans are willing to do well whilst ignoring the fact that he doesn't do what he was signed to do..score goals. Yes he's trying harder.. 25 k a week for increased effort? Whoopy fookin do... The jury is split on Jermaine.. With increased supply will he suddenly become 'prolific'? From what I've seen so far? Nah don't reckon so. Hope I'm wrong but I won't be surprised if he's gonna be off in Jan.. If anyone wants to sign him.

SeCrEt FoX Posted 3 January 2012 Posted 3 January 2012 Beckfords not the best in the air but excellent with his feet , What im trying to say is play it to his feet and he will run at defenders . look what he done against Pompy , Had a few good runs , nearly had a penalty but the thing is we do play long ball and expect him to chase it or flick it on. Kasper has an amazing goal kick which would work wonders for a target man (and would work for a pacey striker/winger if the oppositions defence is pushed up to the halfway line which has happenend a few times this season) but its pointless punting a ball to there 18yrd box for it to bounce to there keeper or someone trys flicking it on which 9 times out of 10 ends up in the keepers hands anyway. Sven tried on the floor passing football which would really suit Beckford but just think were wasteing his ability to play how he does. At Leeds he played on last man ,players would feed him through balls which he ran on to or to his feet whilst he had defenders backs to their goals and he would pass them with ease. Dont slate my opinion but i think thats why hes not producing anything we want or seen him produce at other clubs in the past. Go on you tube check out most of his goals.

That really hits the nail on the head, likes running onto through balls or having it at his feet to run at defenders as he did against pompey, hoofing long balls, or crossing into the box is not exactly his forte or playing to his strengths. If we strengthen up the midfield will not be surprised to see him playing better/scoring more goals.

Kitchandro Posted 3 January 2012 Posted 3 January 2012 welcome to the forum, jermaine. Maybe if you actually scored a goal once in a while, people wouldn't think you were so shit. I do want Beckford to succeed, I really do. I thought he was a great signing at first. I don't know how he played yesterday so I won't comment, but he's going to have to do a little bit more than making some good runs with and without the ball, which people have been using as a defence for him for a few weeks. He always flatters to decieve for me, the end product is the important thing, namely goals. If and not necessarily when he shows some real improvement by scoring some goals or assisting some, then he might start repaying that transfer fee. His effort when he came off the bench at Doncaster and in the Portsmouth game was better and again he looked dangerous without actually doing much. Against Ipswich he was terrible. I wouldn't start him at the moment but I'd probably hang on to him in the transfer window.
