Manchester City must find a world-record £150million fee to lure Gareth Bale from Tottenham.

The Premier League leaders, who face Spurs in a title clash at the Etihad Stadium today, have made discreet enquiries about the 22-year-old Wales international winger.

Even cash-rich City were staggered by the asking price, which would shatter the current £80million world-record transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo from neighbours Manchester United to Real Madrid.

Rumours had surfaced that Bale has a £50 million buy-out clause in his current contract and City were ready to steel a march on a host of European club by meeting that asking price in the summer.

The Stellar Group, who represent Bale, have confirmed that there is no escape clause.

Bale, who is under contract to Spurs until the summer of 2015, has maintained he’s in no hurry to leave White Hart Lane despite growing interest in him.

Ironically, back in 2009, when Spurs were considering the sale of Bale, City turned down the chance to sign him for about £4m. Mark Hughes, City’s manager at the time, didn’t want to complete a deal.

Since the Bale's career fortunes. have been transformed and he has become one of the most exciting players in Europe.

On a vaguely related note, I swear I read that in a poll of Barcelona's fans Gareth Bale came out top, recently, as the player they'd most like Barca to sign.

I literally got wood.

I've read that statement a couple of times.... It's quite disturbing.

It is indeed true that barca fans want bale next summer, but, what has that to do with your member?

In all fairness, if Man City offered 60m, Bale would be gone.

Well Chelsea offered £40 million for Luka Modric last summer and he's still at Spurs.

Tottenham Hotspur are in a very good financial position and there's no reason on Earth why we need to sell our top players - especially to our main rivals.

You wouldn't take £60 million for Bale? Really?

I'm not disregarding Spurs' strong financial position, but surely a bid like that would twist Levy's arm?

Would be madness to reject a bid of that magnitude.

You're way off. I wouldn't pay £20million for Bale.

Wow.

Probably my favourite player to watch in the Premier League right now.

On the current market, he's definitely worth £30 million-plus. He's almost like a Ronaldo-lite. Rapid, built like a brick shit-house but brilliant technique.

Well its a good job you're not a football manager then, because if Spurs put Bale up for sale for just 20million, I think you'd find all the top clubs would make an offer.

To say he's not worth that is ludicrous, bordering on insanity.
