Trav Le Bleu Posted 5 February 2012 Posted 5 February 2012 Everyone knows Stan got a hat-trick. Your friend is a dolt.
strattylcfc Posted 5 February 2012 Posted 5 February 2012 What a game remember that like it was yesterday What a game remember that like it was yesterday What a game remember that like it was yesterday
Saxondale Posted 5 February 2012 Posted 5 February 2012 Ruddy great game, always stands out in my memory.
5waller5 Posted 5 February 2012 Posted 5 February 2012 Probably the only game i can remember that we genuinely had two massive goal threats, 20+ goal a season strikers, on the pitch at the same time .... shame it didn't last long!!! Imagine the opposition's defence sitting in the changing room about to face Collymore and a young Heskey .... worth a goal before they even passed the white line!

Imagine the opposition's defence sitting in the changing room about to face Collymore and a young Heskey .... worth a goal before they even passed the white line! Heskey was never a 20+ goal a season striker (unless you include cups/europe in one Liverpool season) and Stan only ever scored 5 league goals for us!
beemeroo Posted 6 February 2012 Posted 6 February 2012 I think I can see my old dad in the crowd. Did you trade him in for a new one?
5waller5 Posted 6 February 2012 Posted 6 February 2012 Heskey was never a 20+ goal a season striker (unless you include cups/europe in one Liverpool season) and Stan only ever scored 5 league goals for us! Collymore scored 5 for us in 11 appearances - sounds like a 20 goal a season striker to me .... and Heskey was in form ..... was sold for £11m and scored 22 for Liverpool the following season ..... So errrr ..... I stand by my point ..... at that time they were an awesome strike force .... a massive shame we didn't see more of them together.
Phube Posted 6 February 2012 Posted 6 February 2012 Brilliant and a depressing look at what might have been... Heskey left after, then Stan broke his ankle, then O'Neill left... But what a glimpse...
THEBIGJOHNSTEADER; Posted 6 February 2012 Posted 6 February 2012 I was doing my GCSEs at the time of this. Dossing at Lutterworth Grammar and watching city at the weekend. Life was sweet back then

Bettsj2 Posted 6 February 2012 Posted 6 February 2012 Just what happens when you have a great manager and then replace him with one of the worst... O'Neill has said that the starting line up that day was the best starting 11 he's ever managed. Christ we were awesome back then. Amazing how quickly it went wrong.
Guy Posted 6 February 2012 Posted 6 February 2012 Things have never been as good since that crowning day 12 years ago sadly, not even being top of the Prem. the following season for two weeks under Taylor!
Guest Posted 7 February 2012 Posted 7 February 2012 I was at uni and remember this being on in the bar where I worked. Without a doubt the single greatest performance of any City team in my lifetime. Stan Collymore's home debut and, coincidentally, Heskey's final (I think) game for us. MON had finally completed a team which might genuinely have been contenders the next year if he'd stayed and had the £20mil Taylor wasted. I'm still not over the fall which occurred after this game. The top of the table fortnight the following season was nice but never felt really. Taylor ripped the heart out if our team straight away and it was clear from the outset we were in a false position given the signings he had made. It was no surprise when., eventually, the remaining MON players could no longer make up for what Taylor had done to squad and we dropped like a stone. In honesty I think the club is still recovering if you consider our battles since. For that one day against Sunderland, however, I can remember how good we could have been. Ultimately, for many of us, whatever the future brings that will be the one day any future performances will be compared to. Thank you MON.

It makes you realise what great times we had, what great players we had, and most importantly what a great mgr we had. In nigel we trust. the good times can come again!
blueblood88 Posted 7 February 2012 Posted 7 February 2012 I remember watching this after playing footy on a Sunday afternoon, I was about 11 or 12. I don't think anyone realises just how good we were back then until you watch videos a few years later, I really think we were on the verge of being a genuine top 3 or 4 side in the Premier League the following season.

Yes, my point exactly last night in reference to this memorable win.....after which we were never the same again. Lest we forget we had just beaten humble Tranmere in the League Cup final the month before this too. The rest as they say is sadly history. The trouble with P.Taylor was that I heard he didn't like outspoken players or potential troublemakers, hence the reason why players like Ian Marshall, Steve Walsh and Tony Cottee were shown the door by Taylor with immediate effect - all of whom were a vital part of O'Neill's highly successful squad in their own ways. They were all relatively strong characters and outspoken players. Tayor's excuse was probably that they were all past their best. As for getting rid of Stan Collymore to relegated Bradford after two months or so (as it would so transpire that season) - probably for being deemed a troublemaker by Taylor's reckoning - then that was perhaps Taylor's biggest cardinal sin of all - even worse than the signature of Dennis Wise and absolute garbagey players such as Lee Marshall and Akinbadbuyi! Collymore could have been a flair player for us for another couple of seasons and could've been the difference between us staying up in 2002 had we kept hold of him, even if debatable bearing in mind the other departues and inferior newcomers after MON's tenure. It also went some considerable way towards explaining why Taylor has never since returned to manage a club with any pedigree after he got the boot from us - although I'm sure Dull City's fans would beg to differ (as usual!).............
iancognito Posted 7 February 2012 Posted 7 February 2012 I think this was the day that the O'Neill City team "jumped the shark", t all went downhill after this
