Worst ever away day experience - A trip down Memory Lane

Recommended Posts

With Millwall away coming up soon and a number of fans pointing out to the younger Danny Dyer wannabes that this trip isn't the scary experience it was, I thought I'd try to get some accounts of the old days where football away days could be genuinely terrifying on their day.

Millwall at the Old Den, Portsmouth '93 where families were apparently attacked after our play-off win and Middlesbrough in 1988 at Ayresome Park where we beat them and their firm reacting by tipping up cars in the car park afterwards. These are some of the more famous ones of course, maybe Reading away was running the gauntlet back in the day......

There are of course other reasons why away days can be awful. Woeful performances are one, 5-1 at Forest is up there for me. I loved every second of my train journey back to Lincolnshire surrounded by gloating Forest fans. Treated like dirt by the police like at Peterborough in 2009, marched to and from the station with barely enough time for a pint to numb the pain of defeat. Away days that were dull from start to finish, such as my one and only trip to Plymouth. A long and boring coach trip followed by an appalling performance on what can only be described as a cabbage patch of a pitch.

So g'won boys, get the old stories flowing.

Reading Away New Years Day 2003

Stinking hangover, we then got lost driving down, awful weather, awful game which was called off at Half Time.

Not good

New Years Day, not sure of the year.

Ipswich, completely hungover... 2 cars full.

Took a wrong turn or something ended up in Norwich, went to dangerous lengths to make it to Ipswich in time, missed the start & we lost 4-1

Probably forest away in the cup, the clive clarke heart attack game. The atmosphere once the game was abandoned was ****ing bitter. The forest fans and police seemed to join together to create one massive army of *****.

That or Peterborough away a few years ago, I lost my shoe down a manhole. Looked a right twat.

MK Dons was pretty woeful till the 96th minute.

Completely outplayed, no atmosphere, couldn't get a pre-match drink, some bright spark designed the mens' toilet without urinals so I had to piss in the sink and had to sit down.

millwall away new years day about 88 , 30ish in the away end , millwall fans dressed like surgeons , not good , :( on the other hand we got bournemouth 3 seasons on the trot at easter in the late 80s / early 90s , great weekends away :D :D , does anybody remember oxford away late 80s when four leicester fans climbed up the floodlights & escaped over the stands into the gardens at the back of the stand ?

Had some scary days when outnumbered, poor football, bad weather and being hammered several to nil but none compar to the recent horror of making the mistake of going on Foxtravel to Palace and getting stuck on the motorway for several hours on the way back. I'm still having counselling for it.

1982 FA Cup Semi-Final at Villa Park. We were giving Spurs a really good run for their money, when Ian Wilson somehow managed to lob Mark Wallington from abouts half way, and we never really recovered.

3-0 up against wolves at half time only to lose then game 4-3.

Oh and Plymouth on the last day of the season 6 hour drive down there.. the most boring 0-0 ever and then 6 hour drive back on a Sunday.

Think I erased the fact I was at the wolves game from my memory!

A few come to mind the 7-1 at Shef Weds,5-1 at Forest and any Wembley defeat. As for the shitting yourself bit Portsmouth in 93 and Middlesborough in i think 89,Stoke at the old victoria ground after the play off semi final and Arsenal in the league cup at highbury,i think it was 90/91, we got lost around the side streets after the game and had more than our fair share of slaps that night. We then found our minibus and thought its all over.........................Oh no we got on the north circular and bang a brick through the window and then they tried to tip the minibus over whilst we were still in it. That night tested the bowel control i can tell you :sweating:

Also went to Leeds the year they won promotion and they invaded the pitch at the end and started throwing seats and advertising boards at us

Can anyone remember the Cov pitch invasion in the very early 80's and the buddha lads at Ipswich lol was also going to mention the oxford game but someone beat me to it.

stoke away on the last day of the season.at half time in the ground we went down for a drink and the toilet and when we were down there plastic carlsberg bottles were flying all over the place.for whatever reason, one of the bs decided id pissed him off although i was just stood there waiting for my old man.he came over with his cronies asking what my problem was,i said id done **** all.punches rained from all over, and the lads i were with just stood there and watched.my old man came back and being the beast that he is got a few of them off me,which left me one on one with this stupid instigator.i never thought our own fans would just turn on our own like that, and i thought my mates,10 of us which went every away game that season together, would have atleast tried to help get them off me.there was only 6 of them.i was heartbroken.i only used to go to the away games, but i hadnt been to another away game since then until this season.i will never forget that day

My dad was telling me about that one - all the Leicester fans surrounded the bottom of the floodlights and got the lads to jump down. I'll have to try and get my dad to post some stories, he has quite a few good'uns from the 80's.

newcastle away losing 4-3 to a 12 minute shearer hatrick after being 3-1 up and cruising then being pushed almost single file by the police into 30000 newcatse fans going the opposite way and a female city fan getting a right hook in the face from some toon scum...luckily someone held her boyfriend back. a long journey home :-(
