Dog owners fury at ban on dogs off leads

I'm not a dog owner but I was wondering what those on here think of this. I also post it because of the acronym the lobby group have devised.

And why is EVERYTHING on f***ing Facebook these days.

If the rule was introduced, owners would have to keep their dogs on leads in all public areas of the district – including parks and footpaths – or face a fine.

A lobby group – Harborough Owners' Walking Lobby (Howl) – has been set up and almost 250 dog owners have joined the group's page on Facebook.

They said the rule would penalise responsible owners for the "actions of a selfish minority".

Dani Harrison, of Market Harborough, is calling for a meeting with council bosses to discuss the proposals.

The 36-year-old, who has a beagle, Dexter, said: "What is being proposed is too vague and would rule out areas which scores of dog walkers use without any complaints.

"I take my dog, like many other owners, along the Brampton Valley Way.

"Under what is proposed I would not be allowed to have Dexter off the lead.

"There is also a footpath near where I live which is deserted when I take him off the lead. I would be banned from doing so under the new rules.

"Under the proposals we will be banned from large areas and my fear is it could result in pets being made aggressive from a lack of proper exercise."

Tim Hands, of Market Harborough, set up the Facebook page for Howl.

The 49-year-old, who owns a black labrador, Merlin, said: "Responsible owners are angry that their freedom and that of their pets is being curtailed by these proposals.

"We want people to see what is being proposed and comment on it to the council.

"It is right that dogs should be banned from certain areas where there are children. But we need to be consulted."

The proposals also include changes to rules about dog fouling, for which owners can be fined in some areas of the district.

Under the plans, this would be extended to the entire district.

People caught breaking the rules would face £75 on-the-spot penalties or prosecution and fines of up to £1,000.

They should all be on leads , muzzled and wearing fookin big nappies (apart from jack russells of course )

They should make all dogs wear nappies in public. The pavements around my way are covered in dogshit even though there are warnings and shit deposit bins, many of the deposits are on the pavements outside the local primary school it's an absolute disgrace.

I dont see why responsible owners should be punished. We don't have problems here with it on the pavement, theres a few bits on the fields but it isnt that bad. Its just part of having respect and you can normally tell who wont pick it up

With the amount of shit I see every day it's obviously not a minority, maybe it's because our road and neighbourhood is seen as a nice place to walk the dog, ironical not after they've let their dogs shit all over it. And to see kids having to dodge it when they come out of school is just unacceptable.

I'm not specifically anti-dog and often take my daughter's dog for a walk when they visit but i always pick up any mess.

Clearly something more draconian than just putting up warning signs needs to be done.

Agreed. But the story is about dogs being on leads. They will sh1t whether they're on leads or not. It's irresponsible not to pick it up.

The OP is about leads not sh*t

Yes , but it’s more often the dogs who are not on leads that do not get their shite picked up, That’s because it does its business a few hundred yards away from the owner who is sitting on a bench smoking a fag oblivious to what his mutt is doing .

I got into a sort of argument with one dog owner when I was working. I was just going on shift and there is a grassy part in front of the gates. We had been told that a some dog owners had left the dogshit there (by the dogs not the owners) and this bloke was walking his dog. I said to myself but he must have heard, 'I hope you are going to clear that up'

He then started having a go at me. Whats it to do with you.

I'm security here.

Well if you think I've done summat wrong call the police.

No I do not want to call the police, Some dog owners have been iresponsible and the gardner has to mow the grass here.

Well that doesnt belong tothe property its public,

No I think you will find it belongs to the University anyway if you have done nothing wrong and are responsible well done.

I then left it at that I was not getting at him. Some people are so touchy. I wish I had said nothing now.

Mr Chomper loves you.

They should be on leads for safety reasons, end of.

Mr Chomper is indifferent towards you.

I can walk my dog off the lead on main road paths without fear, he knows his green X code better than most of the kids around here. He never shits on paths, obeys my calls and whistles, knows our set routes and I always carry bags for his poo poo`s.

I`v never observed any of the fooking hundreds of cat owners up and down my street clean any cat shit up from my front garden.

People get big disabled dogs and dont have a clue how to look after them, they let the dog dominate them and when they let them off the leash, they`re fooked....

Mr. Chomper can hump my leg any time he feels like it :)

I fvcking hate cats although I have been impressed with the number of mice and rats they've killed this winter (and thereby prevented my chicken feed being nicked).

I`ll pass that on to him, you little bitch :D

I lived with my dad on his 3 acre smallholding in my early 20`s, he kept chickens ducks and a few geese. Searching for eggs in the brambles and hedgerows, getting chased by the cockerel in rutting season, fluffy chicks, orange yolks... bliss.

A vixen got into them though, killed the lot (20+) and buried them around the field with their feet sticking out the ground lol:( .

We never had a real problem with rodents because our old Jack Russell was an unbelievably efficient killer (he used to eat mice after killing them). We used to keep the grain in an old chest freezer in a shed and on one occasion 5 or 6 young rats got in to it, so we chucked the dog in :D, it must have taken him 10 seconds at most.

Btw, geese are a great early warning system against Mr fox (although on at least one occasion, this may seem to be bullshit).

I wish I had the space for chickens...

Nobody ever asks the dogs what they think? Most dog 'problems/issues' are really owner 'problems/issues'. You can't always stop your dog crapping in an unfortunate place but you can always clear it up. Too many people have dogs and do not know how to control them or how to train them to respond to basic commands. The dog ends up as the pack leader and does what they f**k it likes.

I never let my dogs on to football other sports pitches, there are plenty of other places to walk them.

In Glen we have a designated dog walking area running around the outside of the park. Is this telling me I would have to keep the dog on a lead there too?

Posted

My dog runs off the lead on the BVW but I pop him back on or make him sit & stay whenever we meet a cyclist or other walkers - it is the decent thing to do as we are sharing the space with other people, some of whom will be scared of dogs...even soft as shit ones like mine.

Maybe the solution here is a bit of owner education rather than blanket legislation...but that seems to be all politics involves these days: "Do what we say because we tell you to".

I used to feel awful when my dog scared people in the park. He was the kindest dog in the world and just wanted to get stroked by everyone he saw, problem is german shepard galloping towards you will terrify some people. :(

We used to have an English Bull terrier, she was old and would never hurt a thing but people would cross the road to walk past us. She never took any interest in any other dogs or people and just trotted along but people just feared her, so we'd always keep her on a lead if there were any other people around.

I don't know how much effect this ban will have though, I work on a lot of nature reserves where it is mandatory to keep dogs on leads at all times through the summer due to ground nesting birds and calves, lambs and fowls yet a large proportion of people pay not attention to it, even when their dogs are actively chasing and scaring the animals.
