This would be recorded as a hate crime incicent and dealt with by an officer. As the doctor has already explained he meant no offence and has agreed to stop using the word I can imagine the worst that would happen is he may be spoken to informally by an officer, It is highly unlikely he would be arrested or charged with any hate crime offence under these circumstances and a suitable resolution to the issue sems to have already been taken. The offended person has every right to report it to the police and as I said it will be recorded as the offended person percieves it to have been a racially offensive term. My personal opinion is that it was a poorly chosen word to use but the poster has now accepted this and no longer uses it, for me this is a reasonable solution to the issue.

The fact that members are rallying around the user of the term because he's a regular is laughable. I did think about closing this thread or deleting some of the posts but I'm not really here to censor peoples' opinions. I think it's better that people can argue these things out. That said I was a little uncomfortable with some of the things said.

Likewise, but as he explained his use of the word and apologised I felt the issue relating to that specific point could and should have been resolved and the apology accepted. However their argument went significantly deeper and the subject matter was beyond my knowledge span never the less I assumed it was a typical forum based argument where some abuse and swearing comes to fore and it becomes difficult to determine who or if anyone is to blame. If we got involved in every bit of name calling on here we'd end up becoming part of the argument which has happened to me in the past from experience sometimes it's best to let these things resolve themselves.

I understand the leniency towards the author as he is normally funny and a good poster but I think he probably should have used Pakistan or at worse one * between the P and K to show sincere regret at his xenophobia. Still moose and cooling are far more racist.

If Dr Singh had stopped using the word without the astericks (as FIF mentioned) I would have accepted his retract.However he continued to use the word sometimes with the astericks and sometimes without and continued to justify its usage. Thats what annoyed me.

If he just said he was wrong to use that and left it there then there would have been no further debate. With people like Daggers exacerbating the argument it was always going to end how it did.
