Human Rights Act

Human Rights Act and stuff like that .

It seems a few threads tend to get into discussions about the HRA and ECHR and I just wondered what everyone’s thoughts are about their policies and effectiveness etc.

Personally I see the idea as being very good, but sometimes the focus seems to be on the wrong things.

Recently there have been long winded discussions about prisoner’s rights to vote etc ,or criminals being deported but only yesterday on TV I saw many Greek citizens were having their water supplies cut off because they can’t pay the bill and I’ve not heard anyone saying that this is a fundamental transgression of our human rights and should not be tolerated under any circumstances

Anyway, please let’s hear what you’ve got to say as many seem to see it as without flaw, whereas other seem to blame all ills on it

If the cutting off water happened in England and those not paying bills were sent to prison some on here would say serve them right (after reading Sun or Mail) throw away the key, just give them bread and (ironically) water.and make their stay in prison as tough as possible. Any form of giving them help would be too soft and liberal verging on socialism which is evil.

My own personal thoughts differ slightly from the above.

Devils advocate here. So those of us who pay our water rates should subsidise those that dont/can't/don't want to? That seems fair....... I no longer want to pay £50 per week for petrol to get to work to pay my water rates - can someone else pay my fuel bill for me?

You don't have a right to petrol, so no.

Yes I see what you mean , but water is an absolute essential and I really believe it should never be denied for whatever reason .

Petrol is just going to cause inconvenience , but lack water will cause serious illness of even death within days .

Surely they can work something out so that this never happens .

Surely some method of payment can be devised without cutting off the supply .

The Human Rights Act is fundamentally a very good thing.

Unfortunately, you only ever hear about Human Rights in a bad way, such as using them to get a criminal out of deportation etc etc

The Greeks are being well and truly screwed and I think it is a glimpse into the future for most of Europe. I heard something on RT today about the Greeks being quite good at getting their point across by not paying taxes and that kind of thing. But their Euro masters have now said that the Greek authorities have to come down hard on the Greek citizens who do this, else they (the Greek top brass) are going to lose out even more. I've forgotten the specific threat, but either way the Greek people are in a lose lose situation.

Human rights is not a hard thing to implement. People are only asking for the basics, but there seems to be a campaign to discredit 'human rights' that is resulting in peoples rights being taken away.

Do you not think that might be one of the main reasons they're in this mess to start with?

You know how buildings in Greece usually have flat roofs and have those steel pins sticking out the top of the roof? It's a tax scam. By leaving the steelwork exposed, they can claim that they're adding another floor and that the building is still 'under construction', which qualifies for some sort of tax break.

I'm not making this up.

An MP has complained to the BBC and the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) over a joke about the Cornish on Have I Got News For You.

The joke was made on the latest edition of the TV satire show by panellist Andy Hamilton in response to a question.

Dan Rogerson, Liberal Democrat MP for North Cornwall, said the comments showed that "Cornish are discriminated against as a group".

The show's producers said the comment was "clearly tongue in cheek".

In the show, guest host William Shatner asked a question about the Olympic torch relay: "What caused confusion in Truro?"

Panellist Andy Hamilton responded: "Well, they're Cornish aren't they? They'll always be confused in Truro."

Mr Rogerson said: "Of course I like a joke as much as the next person, but on this occasion I can't help but feel that these comments wouldn't be tolerated if they were aimed at the Welsh, Scottish or indeed any other nationality or cultural minority.

"I feel that it is comments like this which show that the Cornish are discriminated against as a group, and that they should be recognised as a distinct cultural minority.

"This would give protections to make sure the Cornish are not stopped from maintaining and celebrating our distinct identity."

'Not offensive'

He added: "I don't want kids in Cornwall to see this kind of thing and and think, 'Is there something about me, maybe I'm not as bright as all the others, maybe I haven't got the chance to be as successful as everybody else.'"

BBC Radio Cornwall listener Steve Dawe, 47, from Callington, said: "It was not offensive, it was very funny.

"People seem to be having a major sense of humour bypass. Everyone was being picked on, MPs, bankers, the Welsh, Scots. The whole programme was having a bash at everyone."

Mr Rogerson's action received a number of responses on the BBC Cornwall Facebook page including Ray Worden who wrote: "Dan Rogerson is a very good MP, but for goodness sake, what a huge storm in a very tiny teacup."
