Irish fans showing themselves up...

A genuine question.

If England fans '

went out of their way to get into a position near the Germany team's arrival to boo and shout crap at them,' would you see it as a disgusting racist attack or purely harmless banter?

Don't say we wouldn't do it either, because we all know that if the Germans were based in Krakow hundreds of England fans would make a beeline for their hotel. It's not just us either, the Germans would do the same to the Dutch and vice versa.

The Irish clearly see us as rivals, partly because of political history like the Scots and Welsh, but partly because we're the closest major footballing power to them. We don't see it as a rivalry, but the Irish do. I daresay the way some of our fans behaved back in 1995 when we visited Dublin for a 'friendly' didn't exactly endear England to them either.

I would see it as small-time and immensely embarrassing, but not racist or offensive.

Are you calling me a ****?

Lets clear this up.

I am absolutely sick to the back teeth of small minded pricks bringing division and negativity to our islands over and over again.

The old laugh it off it's just friendly banter is bollocks.

There is an underlying feeling amongst some Irish, Scottish and Welsh that is anti English.

Sometimes it manifests itself in words, other times actions, and I am sick to the back teeth of it.

We all live in close proximity, and our histories good and bad are intertwined.

When my two grandfathers stood on the battlefields of WW2 they stood with British and Irish together in the common cause. I am proud to be British not English and I have no axe to grind with the Irish.

But this constant negative chip chip chip away by these negative small minded insular pricks is like a disease in our islands, and it really really pisses me off.

Let them divide it, take pride in being more important to them than they are themselves.

Seriously Welsh/Scottish fans I've seen pay more attention to England than themselves, absolutely hilarious.

Jesus Christ, some of the whining on this thread makes me embarrassed to be English. FFS who gives a shit? We gave as good as we got and it was all harmless. Grow up.

Well you're in the finals and we aren't, of course we're paying more attention to you - we aren't playing. Plus, if you hadn't noticed, you're all over all of our sports media. You can't ignore England.

If you can't handle a bit of banter you need to grow the **** up or go watch the golf.

Sorry, is that last comment aimed at me? I can handle it, it's nothing, the Irish stuff towards England is more embarrassing than offensive.

First bit is fair enough.

As an Irishman I found this amusing. Not one bit of the songs that were sung from a small group of what looked like 15 drunken lads was aggressive. It was all done in good humour.

I'm glad to see that the response from hearing that is..the Irish what a bunch of w@nkers as usual.

What surprises me is that there weren't enough English fans there to drown out them out in song.

If you are taking this seriously enough to let your own prejudices come out then fair enough.

Living in England and elsewhere I've come up against plenty of racism. This is not racism. It's playful banter and wind-up. If you can't distinguish between the two then fook off.

I found that reply amusing.

I was gonna say it took two pages to pick up on that lol brilliant response.

"You'll never beat the Irish" (mostly because the earliest they could face each other is in the knockout rounds),

lol lol lol lol brilliant! I enjoy the banter, I hope Ireland do well. Would love to get them in the quarters and win though, just for the plastic paddies that have crawled out from their rocks.

Brilliant isn't it? I don't like Scotland but Wales remind me of Coventry lol

Why would they be classed as plastic paddys? if there from Ireland then the statement is pretty stupid.

 plastic paddies being a term for people who aren't from Ireland, and jump on the bandwagon. I thought the term plastic paddies would make it pretty obvious that I'm on about non-Irish.

Explain yourself immediately.

:fishing:

I'm afraid I just don't see Wales as anything, and find it funny the hate directed at the English.

In fairness, England are the international equivalent of Newcastle.

Won fvck all for 40 odd years, mostly gash since save for a few brief moments in the mid 90s, fabled support that actually isn't all that great compared to the real big hitters but the fans are at least pathologically loyal and optimistic for the future.

Now where's Chandler to say that Aston Villa is a better comparison?

I'm gonna say Scotland are Leeds by the way.

Good numbers and passionate fans but bugger all else. :D

Massive hole in that though - Leeds occasionally win matches.

I was thinking more along the lines of the Dennis Wise era Leeds.

Classic times.

Newcastle play entertaining football at times - something England have never achieved apart from the demolition of Germany.

I see them as Leeds: won something once, mindless thugs as fans, wholly over-rated, think they're bigger than they are, tedious to watch play.

Nonsense. That element of our support has almost been completely abolished, though we'll always have a few ****** following us but who doesn't? Often when trouble does flair you'll more often than not find out that it wasn't the English that started it. Because of our reputation, trouble makers come to us as they still think that we are "game for it'.

We have won countless plaudits over the past decade for our support in terms of its size and behaviour. Its about time we started getting some credit instead of having that monkey around our necks the whole time.

I have an Irish father and an English mother so naturally I hate everyone.

PS I find it quite amusing how upset some people are by the acts of a few Ireland fans. They've hardly set fire to the England team bus have they? Clearly a bit of banter, if it had been anything even remotely provocative it would surely have kicked off between them and the English fans that were present?

As long as football federations from Continental Europe shrug off their own problems with hooliganism and racism because English fans used to be like that once before (ahem, Ukraine), sadly, that's a monkey UEFA will continue to have you wear.
