How many players do we need for the start of the season?

The Truth is boring

Im not saying he's top notch and yes be nice to see someone else but to say he's not good enough is ridiculous.

He's not guaranteed to play every match anyway especially if we play 4-3-3

Fair enough, I have just seen enough of Dyer he is steady eddy championship player very much if you want to establish yourselves in the championship type, but if we want promotion we need a better player in that position imo.

Dyer is not good enough, he has his moments but is so inconsistent and if we want to challenge for promotion we need a better Left Winger it isn't to much to ask for.

While I agree with you in terms of my frustration with his inconsistency and as we have the money I'd like to see improvements made in that position. I would say that it's unfair to say he isn't good enough for a side challenging for promotion when we got in the Play-Offs with him as first choice in that position, couple that with the fact that he was one of our better players at the back-end of last season (At least I thought he was), and I think you're being very harsh.

Yeah reasonable statement. He's very inconsistent for me which is why some love him and some think he's average at best.

I think NP is struggling to get someone to fit the position to be honest although not sure why we've not gone for Raheem Sterling on loan......

With a lesser squad last year? Where are the improvements? I see a marked decline in terms of pure ability.

Yes, a lesser squad. On paper, it looked good but the start of the season was a team that didn't gel together at all. The problem players (Mills, Bamba) have been sold on, so less liability there. The other players who we've let go barely got a look in last season.

We've brought in Futacs - a player with a good reputation, and importantly a target man (which we were lacking) of colossal height - this will undoubtedly provide a good sub option when a game isn't going the right way and Pearson needs a plan B.

We've brought in Vardy, a striker with an amazing talent for consistently landing the ball where he wants. Personally I think it's irrelevant that he was playing for a Conference side - if you've seen him play, you'll know he was playing well under his worth - and there's every chance that Vardy and Futacs could prove to be a fantastic pairing. Keen target man + highly skilled goal-scorer = plenty of shots. It's a very good formula, and should also prove effective in those horrible stale-mate games.

Zak Whitbread (yet to be officially unveiled) - a proven defender and highly popular with Norwich fans - an integral part of a team which has been hugely successful over the past 3 years.

Ritchie de Laet - a versatile defender who's played alongside Whitbread, this familiarity is bound to be a bonus.

Plus Matty James, and anyone else who Pearson may bring in - there's still time, but I think the squad is just about there already.

And of course players who Pearson brought in half-way through the season - Morgan, Marshall and Drinkwater - all quality additions to the squad, and will all play vital roles from the word go this coming season.

How many of the 17/18 players we've released / sold were anywhere near starting a game for the first 11?... Bamba. The rest were either a has been, a never has been, or a failure. And only a couple were ever even close to coming on as a sub.

We've got rid out many hangers on and replaced them with what may or may not be good signings. Even if they all turn out to be failures, we've still got most of the match day squad together that post Christmas was in play off form.

It appears to me there will be at least eight better sides than us. Too soon to be sure, I know, and I hope I will be wrong.

Unspecific and unsubstantiated. If you want your opinion to have any credence, name the "eight or more", and tell us why.

I have no idea how many games you have seen him play or even if you spent them pissed or in the bogs but for me this is way wide of the mark.

Dyer has bags of quality, regularly skins his man gets to the line and gets a ball in. In addition he works his nuts of getting back as required.

Anyone who was at Derby away last season and saw him burst away from our own half beat 3 men and put a pin point ball into the box for Danns to score will tell you he is a class act. And it's not the only example, AND he scores at times, sometimes absolute screamers.

Sometimes I think some of our fans only rate a player when he has been signed for a large sum of money, rather than actually looking at the on field performances.

He is stagnating without any real competition, we do need a better Left winger imo, someone who can cross the ball more often than not with better accuracy.

The problem is he doesn't score or cross it for goals enough, although if he did that he'd probably be in the premier league with the pace he has. Absolutely no problem with Dyer being in our squad, he adds something we don't have much of.

People are "Anti" Dyer because he falls in with Gallagher, King, Wellens... people are bored of them, they've been here longer than any of the others in the squad. The reason they have been here for so long though is because during the tenure of Pearson (first time), Sousa and Sven they were our better performers, that's why they got handed long contracts. But people forget that unfortunately and just label them "Pearsons chosen men".

Are they good enough to get us promoted if they were all in the starting 11. Probably not, but they are definitely good enough to be in a squad that can achieve promotion.

I agree, if he was firing in 20-30 deadly balls a game he'd be playing for man utd etc.

I'll take the 4-5 we get, I'll also take the tireless work ethic he displays, the ability and will to beat a full back and he commitment to our club.

Add to that the odd goal he chips in with and what we have is a huge asset to our squad.

Whilst I agree he needs competition, he certainly does not need replacing in my opinion.

I've never been anti Dyer. I said last season that it's probable that dropping Dyer last season was one of the reasons Sven lost his job.... There was literally no width in his teams and we couldn't counter attack with any purpose.

Wellens has always been one of my favourite players but now I think his legs have gone.

King and Gally are and have always been great one game, missing the next... That's been a relative constant for the past few seasons.

I'm not 'bored' of such players.. I believe that we need a generally better standard of squad per se to gain promotion.

How many seasons out of the top flight are we now?

You kind of contradict yourself really. If these 'constants' would have been good enough we would have gained a promotion.

None are bad players but who would you like on our right wing? Snodgrass/Burke or Gally?

Centre mid? King or Koren/Nolan?

Up front? Beckford or Lambert/Sharpe?

Etc etc etc

The fact is we haven't been good enough to gain promotion. For many years.

Let's hope this season we are.

If only the managers had known that all we had to do was spend another £15m on Snodgrass, Nolan, Sharp etc. Plenty of players have come and gone on big money, and barring last year that group have seen them off because they have been better than those coming in still.

Wanting better players to come in is one thing, the constant barrage of abuse those players get and calls for them to be got rid of are another. They are good enough for places in this squad without questions.

Who are all of these players that have signed for 'big money' then have gone again to a 'barrage of abuse'?

Mills? You were happy to see him go....

Beckford... Remains with us

Konch... Remains with us

Bamba... Was never signed for big money and has gone with the fans blessing....

Gelson... Wanted to leave.....

Enlighten me because Im not sure who or what you mean?

Well for a start off I never said the players coming in got abuse, I said the players I listed get abused.

Johnson, Abe, Teixeira came and went, Fernandes when he was here was on the bench a fair bit as was (8 of his 18 appearances). All signed to replace these players and none succeeded.

I think you're clutching at straws.

None of the players you mentioned were:

a. Particularly big name/big money players, especially re. Transfer fees

b. Good enough

Just because we didn't sign better players than Wellens, King or Gally it don't mean we couldn't have done!

And if you're concerned about the likes of Wellens, King and Gally being 'abused' well, I doubt it's affected them too much.. They're still ere...

lol....

We could of and should have signed better last season.

Let's hope Nige gets this right.

Im starting to think he may well do.

I think this is pretty much spot on actually.

I think Dyer is a great squad player and people that are caning him and saying he should go are a disgrace. Fair enough he may not be premiership quality but the guy is a solid performer, often causes panic in opposition defences when he goes at them and in my opinion is most effective when coming on late on in a match to get a bit of pace.

He's been a great servant for the club since coming in and openly admitted himself that he loves Leicester and the fans. Think he deserves a bit more respect for that at least.

Col I haven't got a bloody clue what you are banging on about... you go on about me clutching at straws but it seems to me you've got the wrong end of a stick and are waving it around like a man with a bee in his bonnet.

I mean, who the hell said we couldn't of signed better players? The point i've made and you seem to have missed spectacularly is that these players are not as bad as people make out, are still here because they have continuously been better than those brought in to replace them, and have done little to warrant a) the abuse and b) people wanting them out of the squad no matter what.

Yet another thread from me today, but was just thinking about what I read in the mercury a couple of days ago.

Pearson said that it's a lot easier to work with around 25 players, instead of over 30 players which we had at the start of last season. So how many players do we need for the start of the Championship season?

How many more signings will we make to add to our squad, who do you believe will be cut from the squad, maybe youngsters out on loan etc..

I looked at the current squad list and cut a few players and I got left with 22 players(not including Whitbread), Pearson said he would like around 25, here is the squad I came up with.

Goalkeepers - Schmeichel, Logan, Smith

Defenders - Konchesky, St Ledger, Morgan, Kennedy, Moore, De Laet, Whitbread

Midfielders - King, Drinkwater, Wellens, Danns, James

Wingers - Marshall, Gallagher, Dyer

Strikers - Waghorn, Beckford, Nugent, Vardy, Futacs

I cut the likes of Peltier as he will most likely be sold, and Schlupp, Parkes and Harry P because they will most likely be loaned out.

So...

Is that squad good enough yet?

How many players do you think will be added?

Do you agree that the likes of Peltier and Schlupp will leave?

What is a suitable squad number for Pearson to work with?

Thanks

I still believe we need a left winger. Dyer is our only natural left winger and although his pace can sometimes be indispensible, he doesn't have an end product and doesn't produce on a regular basis, which is probably why he has never played above Championship level. We need a tricky left winger with the ability to beat players but also score a few goals. Gallagher is also not good enough. Marshall is our only winger that will produce on a consistent basis.

Although we have a few central midfielders, a 'gritty' midfielder wouldn't look out of place. Jay Spearing's name was mentioned earlier, and although I don't think we will sign him, we could do with a player with similar attributes, a player that will just put his body on the line. Players like King are luxary players; they get knocked off of the ball to easy and we often carry them too much in physical games, such as Millwall, especially away games.

Overall though, the squad looks decent to be. The squad does have the ability to challenge, and I'd take a top 6th finish, no doubt.

Happy with the goalkeepers. Need another Cb to rotate, maybe a loanee from a prem club, Danny Wilson from liverpool? Then we are done in defence! A ball winning midfeilder is needed, to have on the bench to close games out! Maybe Papa Bouba Diop as a free agent? Would also like a right winger as marshall is more suited in the centre but that can be sorted out in a later market! I am happy with all the forwards so all in all ill like to see two more signings!

Maybe I interpret it in different way, but I read it as, people are bored of the other 3, and Dyer tends to get tagged on unjustly.

I'm not saying he should be first choice either, but I do think he adds to the squad over the course of a season (at this level).

Why are you so anti him?
