How many players do we need for the start of the season?

Yet another thread from me today, but was just thinking about what I read in the mercury a couple of days ago.

Pearson said that it's a lot easier to work with around 25 players, instead of over 30 players which we had at the start of last season. So how many players do we need for the start of the Championship season?

How many more signings will we make to add to our squad, who do you believe will be cut from the squad, maybe youngsters out on loan etc..

I looked at the current squad list and cut a few players and I got left with 22 players(not including Whitbread), Pearson said he would like around 25, here is the squad I came up with.

Goalkeepers - Schmeichel, Logan, Smith

Defenders - Konchesky, St Ledger, Morgan, Kennedy, Moore, De Laet, Whitbread

Midfielders - King, Drinkwater, Wellens, Danns, James

Wingers - Marshall, Gallagher, Dyer

Strikers - Waghorn, Beckford, Nugent, Vardy, Futacs

I cut the likes of Peltier as he will most likely be sold, and Schlupp, Parkes and Harry P because they will most likely be loaned out.

So...

Is that squad good enough yet?

How many players do you think will be added?

Do you agree that the likes of Peltier and Schlupp will leave?

What is a suitable squad number for Pearson to work with?

Thanks

To challenge for top 2 I think we still need players like Chester & Stewart

Although I personally don't know how far off Taft & Bolger are from warranting a place in the matchday squad at the back & with the addition of Whitbread we could be good enough there with what we already have & obviously having strengthening the exposed right back spot.

I still think we need pace with purpose out wide, I like Dyer I really do and he's a great asset to the squad and a real team player, but the outcome of his attacks is not good enough for a side hopeful of a top 2 slot IMO, his scoring rate and especially his assist rate just isn't there. On the other side I'm more than happy with Marshall & Gally

Up front we've lost Vassell & Howard and got in Vardy and Fuctas, excellent moves IMO and along with Nuge, Beckford, Schlupp is a front 5 that anyone else in the division would love to have, with this I think Hopper & Panayiotou should be allowed out on loan, and I'm just not sure on Waggy with the rest of the talent we have at our disposal

I think our current number is about right and any arrivals should be met with departures

I'd start the season with,

Goalkeepers - Schmeichel, Logan, Smith

Defenders - Konchesky, Kennedy, St. Ledger, Morgan, Whitbread, Taft, De Laet, Moore

Midfielders - King, Drinkwater, James, Wellens (Injured), Danns

Wingers - Marshall, New Left Winger, Gallagher, Dyer

Strikers - Nugent, Waghorn, Vardy, Futacs

I'd sell Beckford and Peltier myself, plus get rid of whoever is least effective in the centre of midfield in January, and invest the money on making sure we get a real top quality LM. Aside from that I think we're pretty much done, not desperate for anyone else, although if St. Ledger isn't going to be happy on the bench I'd get rid and bring in a young CB as a third option. Unlike most people I really don't think we need any addition at CM, in fact I'm pretty happy with the squad as it is, can't say I'd be devestated if we did no more business although I would perhaps be a little underwhelmed.

Ask Nige

His bloody squad

Infact

"There is a workable number in the squad. We had an awful lot of players last season. It must be around 20 who have left since I arrived back.

"We have brought in six, but I still think we need a competitive squad. So the number, whether it is around 24 or 25, is a decent number. In that, there will be a few fringe players. It is very hard to keep everyone happy when you have 30-plus first-team players."

New left winger is essential, I hope we don't stick Vardy out there we all know how much defensive work Pearson expects of his wingers, it could harm him stepping up to this level.

Wellens and Dyer need to go, not been good enough for a while now.

We need a quality left winger, but the players we have will not get us into the top two, and I don't believe they will make the top eight.

Chester and Stewart would have made a big difference.

We do need a good winger but they are so hard to find I fear we'll go with what we've got. To get out of this league you need a player with some serious creative spark going forward and I don't see that anywhere in our squad. I see a plan B which runs something like lump it up to Futacs, which is better than nothing, but when our plan A contains no real threat from midfield we're going to struggle. It'll take a superb bit of business to get the player we need for the kind of money we seem to be able to spend in the current climate. So it's time to earn your wage, Nige, otherwise it's 10th place at christmas and goodbye.

But... We finished 9th with a lesser squad last year, why don't you think we'd make 8th with the current squad?

With a lesser squad last year? Where are the improvements? I see a marked decline in terms of pure ability.

Fixed.

A new winger, somebody like Chris Burke would be good. Also I think we need a good creative midfielder, Koren would be ideal. We have no one who is an attacking midfielder with an eye for a pass, we just have a load of average box to box midfielders with no specific role.

Some of the stuff ive heard about Matty James suggests he does have an eye for a pass, but i suppose only time will tell how true that is.

It appears to me there will be at least eight better sides than us. Too soon to be sure, I know, and I hope I will be wrong.

I couldn't disagree more. Dyer has been a superb performer when given a chance.

I agree here too, Dyer will be an asset this season as he is most seasons.

In general, i think we could do with a winger but if we dont get one then so be it. Our squad has a more 'hard to beat' look to it and a squad with much more hunger and desire.

Look at the games last season where we should of won and scored a few goals, Waford away, Bristol City away, Blackpool away etc, all games where we conceded far too easy and werent solid enough. Im thinking that will change

Dyer is not good enough, he has his moments but is so inconsistent and if we want to challenge for promotion we need a better Left Winger it isn't to much to ask for.
