Mark_w Posted 8 August 2012 Share Posted 8 August 2012 Wide players not wingers other people said wingers (of which there are very few true wingers any more), Knockeart spent last season playing upfront but I have no problem counting him as a wide player. Ok so how were King, Wellens and James relevant to this lecture? Sorry I'm having real trouble trying to work out what your point was in the original post and therefore what this topic is actually about. Maybe you could run us through it step-by-step? Babylon Posted 8 August 2012 Share Posted 8 August 2012 I corrected you on this the other day... No need to thank me. Dangerous Tiger is 89 years old, so it's hardly a shock a large group of players in their late 20's is inexperienced to him.
fleckneymike Posted 8 August 2012 Author Share Posted 8 August 2012 But they were there if we needed them, which couldn't be said about the team he inherited. Inheriting a team that had finished 5th the year before, with £10/£20m to find the replacements? I think I could probably cope with that just fine actually. Sousa inherited that squad. Mark_w Posted 8 August 2012 Share Posted 8 August 2012 Sousa inherited that squad. Then Sven inherited what was pretty much the same squad a few months later so the point still sort of stands.
Babylon Posted 8 August 2012 Share Posted 8 August 2012 Well Sven did Sell both Adams and N'Guessan. I suppose it depends on the system I was going to play, if I were to play a diamond then no, likewise if I were to play 433. Vassel, lest we forget, could be deployed on either flank and Schlupp could play wide. But he didn't stick to 4-3-3 did he, he realised it wasn't working and was stuck without any other options other than a diamond with 4 CM's. Anyone know how many wingers we finished with against Cardiff? Christ now we are picking out individual games. This is getting desperate. Sousa inherited that squad. Yes and Sven inherited that Squad about two months later.
Corky Posted 8 August 2012 Share Posted 8 August 2012 It's not the balance that worries me, it's the masses of inexperience. Are you serious?
Fox92 Posted 8 August 2012 Share Posted 8 August 2012 Oakley, King, Wellens, Moussa, Johnson, Fernandes, Danns, Gallagher and Dyer After some careful pruning we now have just 9, thats a far more manageable amount King, Wellens, Gallgher, Dyer, Danns, James, Marshall, Drinkwater and Knockeart. Dyer, Knockeart and Marshall are our wingers. Gallagher isn't exactly a central midfielder, and Wellens is injured for a few months. That leaves King, Danns, Drinkwater and James as our central midfielders (4). As appose to last season, where we had Oakley, King, Wellens, Moussa, Johnson, Fernandes, Danns and Abi for the central midfield positions. The very annoying thing is that Sven had millions to spend, but he didn't actually buy us a winger. Oakley, Danns and Moussa were all wide-midfielders, not real wingers. Everybody knew last season that we needed a winger, but it didn't arrive untill Nigel became manager and got us Marshall. We were totally unbalanced last season, and I really don't see the need for all this thread/debate again.

Mark_w Posted 8 August 2012 Share Posted 8 August 2012 Because they are midfielders. Who was Pearson's FIRST midfield purchase upon his return? Drinkwater because Fernandes threw his toys out the pram, Johnson was never fit, Abe was leaving imminently and he didn't think Oakley and Moussa were any longer good enough. He also brought in Marshall improving the balance in the squad by bringing in a winger. Sorry but I need you to clarify this for me again 'cause I'm a bit thick, is this thread about the number of wide men we had two years ago or is it about the balance of the squad now compared to when Nigel took over as the first post suggests... Leicfox Posted 8 August 2012 Share Posted 8 August 2012 I'd bet we'll defo see either Drindkwater or Danns play on the right wing this season at some point.

Leicester_Numan Posted 8 August 2012 Share Posted 8 August 2012 To make the point about Pearson's possible hypocrisy Mike, you really should have included the midfield that he left behind in the opening post. And I do see your point. As for the midfield he took over, just looking at the names and knowing their normal positions it looks unbalanced and proved to be exactly that. The midfield now does look better balanced on paper. I'm glad you mentioned Allen and his right backs, couldn't believe people actually wanting him back as manager in other threads
Gubbins Posted 8 August 2012 Share Posted 8 August 2012 All this talk of wingers. Surely the only time you need an honest to goodness out and out touchline hugging winger is if your playing the prehistoric flat 442. Pretty much any other formation can utilise wide midfielders/attackers. We never played a flat 442 under Sven so its not actually that surprising that we didnt have many wingers on the books (although we did have too many CMs) so I dont neccessarily buy all this needing wingers to balance out the squad. She didn't cope with the move to the new stadium very well, last time I saw her was in high fields clutching a crackpipe saying "you should have won the ballon d'or Junior Lewis".
