LCFC VS Sunderland Match Thread

Recommended Posts

I personally think you maybe need to show Thracian some respect. I have read many posts by him that I have felt to be on the button. If I'm honest, a lot more than I've read from yourself and he clearly isn't an 'idiot'.

However, in this instance I'm afraid he comes across as a miserable bloke. Even if he thinks that today's game wasn't important, maybe let us revel in what most people felt was a really well organised, competitive team?

There is a big difference between hope and harsh reality. Yes, it was a friendly, yes Sunderland looked poor but frankly, who cares? After last season we need something to pin our hopes on. That performance today provided it.

Yes he is! ( an idiot I mean ). The first half ( which this thracian bloke saw ) was the first time any midfield since Lennon and Savage has actually challenged in midfield with a determination to win the ball from the opposition. Drinkwater and James were very effective, Danns and even King also tried to be much more committed in challenges in a way that has been missing for many years from innumerable central midfield players - anyone who saw that yesterday and might deny this great new attitude on the pitch is sadly lacking in the ability to analyse football performances. It was that obvious.

What impressed me most was our willingness to shoot and put decent crosses in, much better than the 'let's pass it twenty times round the edge of the box' game we played last season.

Let's hope we continue to play this way and confidence will grow.

I hate to agree with you.

Kind of illustrated my point that you don't necessarily need a specialist DM and a specialist AM if you have two players who can do both and share responsibility.

Only one game I know, but it was encouraging.

And what's the purpose of analysing something like the tenacity of our midfield when the opposition seem to be running in neutral?

I remember Drinkwater first arriving on the scene and doing so much to give us ascendancy over Southampton (away). I looked forward to us and Drinkwater playing in the same manner for the remainder of the season but it didn't happen. It remains to be seen if Drinkwater has a more consistently effective season this year or not but I wouldn't draw conclusions about it from yesterday's performance.

Yesterday provided no serious evidence of a "new attitude in midfield" because there was never any."attitude" from the opposition to measure it by, at least to any purpose.

More impressive to me was the ability of Beckford and Vardy to get behind, or threaten to get behind, Sunderland's defence. But that minor highlight was dimmed by some cynical Sunderland defending, indifferent finishing and a totally separate issue of failing to make our final pass tell from wide positions.

The latter is an old failing and one we seem to do nothing about.

Agree Babylon, I made the same point and it was pleasing to see the quality options we could actually have in our new midfield choices.

Yes, the same Barnsley who beat or drew with us like so many average sides last season - but you could liken Sunderland to Coventry if you want to be pedantic.

Wasn't really being pedantic. You compared them to a side that we failed to beat last season so surely that's progression?

Twas a highly encouraging performance yesterday. I thought the first half was extremely refreshing to see our central midfield of Drinkwater and James seeking out the ball, controlling it, and passing it forward with comfort. Controlling the centre of the park in essence.

Second half i was then thrilled to see us playing with two dynamic, attacking wingers who are comfortable with the ball, taking on their men, or cutting inside and getting a rasping shot way, plus they don't seem to mind tracking back to seek it out again. Very encouraging.

Saying that though, for me the man of the match was definitely Moore, he was in total control of himself, his opposition and his position on the pitch, doubly impressive as on paper he really had his hands full today.

The only real negatives for me were the performances of King and Waghorn who seem to have totally lost their effectiveness as professional footballers. Felt a bit sorry for Danns yesterday as with King next to him he practically has to perform the role of two men. Those two surely have to improve if they are to feature much this season.

As for Sunderland, well, i think they've won once so far this pre-season and to me they look very much an average size. Don't think they'll struggle in the Premier League but i don't think they can expect much in the way of a Europa League spot either. Its a shame as it would appear O'Neill isn't being backed in the transfer market thus far. I hope this job doesn't sully his reputation.

Good work and good quality camera, was that on a phone?! Would have loved to see some of Knockaert's trickery on there. Vid 2 perhaps? :)

Thanks mate. No, captured it on a Panasonic Lumix, works a treat for the football ;)

Didn't get any of Knockaert's stepovers, sorry pal! I'll try to get as much footage of the Torquay game as I can!

Thracian....you weren't wearing yellow sunglasses were you?! Slightly random if you weren't but the guy in front of me didn't show up for the second half, much to ours and everybody elses within earshots delight!

Obviously if that wasn't you then I apologise, I just had to ask as he seemed to be watching the same game as you.
