I think today was very encouraging for reasons which many people have already stated, so I won't repeat them.

Sunderland had a good spell early on in the second half where I really expected them to score. I was really pleased that we withstood the pressure and if they did manage to get a shot on goal, someone always managed to get something in the way of it. This is a huge improvement on last season and it was great to see us fight through a tough patch and get ourselves back on top again.

For me, the midfield two worked much better in the first half than the second. We were winning 50/50 possession and winning the ball back when Sunderland, had possession so neutering their attacks before they could start. Many people have said this was one of our main weaknesses last season and I'm encouraged it won't be this year.

My main concern was 'only' winning 1-0. We had the possession and chances to be well ahead in the first half and I hope we are not going to waste too many chances this year. Vardy, for all his good points, looks like he needs to be much more clinical. However once he has his first goal I suspect he will settle.

All in all...good stuff!!

I'd no intentions of going til cirumstances changed. As for your sarcasm we'll see.

People are talking about us beating a Premiership club but Sunderland didn't look any better than the likes of Barnsley from the evidence of 45 minutes,

in fact they were as forgettable a side as I've seen down here, a view that seems to have been more than confirmed by their own disgruntled fans who were no doubt cheesed off to witness their club's fourth defeat in pre-season friendlies

If you somehow thought we did well against a good side then I'm pleased for you. To me it was little more than the a training run-out.

The same Barnsley that beat us and drew with us last season?

Strange how a narrow win over a modest premier league team is described as 'positive' and 'encouraging'......

but an emphatic loss to a lower league side is of no consequence as it is only a 'preseason friendly........ :dunno:

Anyway all this optimism and enthusiasm will come face to face with reality on the 18th, when it matters and the opposition are actually trying...... :thumbup:

It was the performance more than anything, they looked committed and playing as a unit, especially in the first half, and Knockaert looked very lively.

Do the results matter? I don't know, but since the Shrewsbury game, we've won each match against different levels of opposition ;)

Think the positiveness comes from a better performance than poeple were expecting.

Moore looked good, Knockaert looked good too.

The teams weaknesses and strengths will soon expose themselves but i doubt it will be smooth sailing with Leicester lol

Just got in and all i'll say is i think i'm gonna love knockaert this year and Lee Cattermole is a willy puller lol Loved the big cold shoulder O'neil gave him after he got subbed .

Absolutely, and I saw enough today to make me feel quite optimistic :)

Back to reality, I expect Peterboro to be a much tougher proposition, away from home they will undoubtably go 4-5-1 and try and dominate us in midfield...... :(

It worked for many of the 'lesser' teams last season, which was why our record against the bottom 6 was so woeful.

Will we do better this season? I bloody well hope so, though I an really not that confident..... :dunno:

What's this about Cattermole? What happened for O'Neill to give him the cold shoulder?

Bit of handbags think he took exception to Knockys stepovers etc n shoved him bit pratty but not crime of the century, personally pleased we got someone to pull that stuff off and get under players skins :D

Solid. Schmeichel was reliable, I thought not a single player who was in defence today had a bad game. Morgan was my MOTM again, he's looked absolutely solid every time I've seen him this summer. Liam Moore - take a chance on the lad. For me he should start there v Posh, he looked solid at centre half, composed on the ball and got the job done, good in the tackle too. Parkes was a bit rash with his passing but got the goal so fair play. Konchesky impressed as usual, Schlupp actually had a good game at left back I thought and De Laet was impressive too, he seems a positive player.

MID

Improved again, Drinkwater had a very good game, he's gonna have a big part for us this year if he keeps up his form like this, he seemed to dip at the end of last year but this is far better. James impressed me too, a pretty solid player and he's actually fairly similar to Drinkwater, both of them like a tackle and can pick a pass, I'd have nothing against either of them starting v Posh in a 4-4-2. King wasn't as bad as people say either, a couple of mistakes early on and whilst I wouldn't say he caught the eye, he was nowhere near as bad as some are saying and I can't help but feel they're basing it on making early mistakes. Now onto the interesting bit, the wingers. To think a year ago we had one at the club, and that was Dyer, who was too quiet again today for me. Marshall started slowly but was everywhere in the end and nearly scored a great goal, impressive display from him. Of course, we move on to our very own FLAIR king. Knockaert is exactly what we've lacked out wide, he's positive, he can defend, he's not scared to try ridiculous things, the lad's got unreal potential, how anyone can say they'd start Dyer over him next week, beyond me. Absolute FLAIR.

Beckford & Vardy were far more dangerous than Nugent & Waghorn. I'm no Beckford fan but he wasn't bad today IMO, he squandered a decent chance through poor decision making and taking too long, on the whole he wasn't bad. Vardy impressed me, he's a hard worker and like Knockaert he's positive and always wants to make something happen, his ball through to Beckford was great play. Nugent on the other hand who I am a fan of was crap and barely touched it, Waghorn didn't look too bad for once.

Solid win against a top flight opposition (although they were poor), not surprising stuff but glad we look a more solid side with potential to excite the crowd.

Give me this side over the one 12 months ago any day of the pissing week.

The best post I've ever seen you write. This was how the game was. Although I do think Beckford scuffed the first shot he had, making the save easier.

Can't find the attendance anywhere.

I bought an extra ticket at around 12 o'clock and they had sold 9000 tickets. I suppose a few more would've been sold after that and I don't know whether it included Sunderland fans.

So I suppose it must've been around 10 000.

Yes, the same Barnsley who beat or drew with us like so many average sides last season - but you could liken Sunderland to Coventry if you want to be pedantic.

Your two posts have just been idiotic, oh I went because circumstances changed, if you didn't wanna go in the first place just don't go.

I had other arangements for today but my son and his girlfriend asked me for tickets cos they were coming up from London. In the end they couldn't make it so I exchanged those tickets for Peterborough tickets. I'd have got a refund for my own except that Singhy asked me out for a pre-match drink which, in retrospect, was much more enjoyable than watching a half-committed Sunderland. As I said, I went because of "circumstances" and found it singularly unexciting. I don't think their goalkeeper made more than one save in the first half?

Your posts are good on other threads, but your one's earlier just baffled me.

You didn't even look to any positives from our performance, you just slated that it was boring and Sunderland didn't commit and looked as good as Barnsley did last season. You sounded incredibly bland and unexcited by the whole thing, I wasn't the only one baffled mind some others picked up on your post.
