Mark 'expert' Lawrenson Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 Pretentious- Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed. Without being pretentious I think its time to start a thread aimed at all things pretentious- May I start with the word Chocolatier. If anyone here is a chocolatier please explain yourself.
Captain... Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 Rimbombante. It is a Spanish word that means ostentatious and pretentious, such a great word, really rolls off the tongue especially with the Spanish "r"s.

acooling08 Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 And the award for most boringly predictable post of the decade goes to... It was very very predictable, but correct nonetheless.
21st Century Fox Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 It's not exactly exclusive, there are certain "right-wing" posters who like to make very gauche, pretentious statements about their lifestyles.
pSinatra Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 I actually know a couple just like this...........they live in Earl Shilton!!!
Alf Bentley Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 It was very very predictable, but correct nonetheless. Oh! Touché, mon pote, touché! May you mistakenly place your 1st edition of Guy Debord's "The society of the spectacle" in your George Foreman grill and lack the sensitivity to fully appreciate the irony....

How very true . I was reprimanding my butler for his excessive use of sesquipedalian diction just this morning .
21st Century Fox Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 Kind of related.... I was thinking the other day we should have a Humblebrag* thread, we'd easily reach 100+ pages within a week. *Definition: “a humble brag is basically a specific type of bragging that masks the brag in a faux-humble guise.†http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/features/nobody-likes-a-show-off-the-excruciating-rise-of-the-humblebrag-2363207.html https://twitter.com/Humblebrag

Is that the sort of thing ?
z-layrex Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 Pretentious doctors who talk to me like I'm a child are really starting to get to me. It's usually surgeons that are the culprits!

Despicable behaviour, not sure how a humblebrag thread would work because by posting in it you are not humbly bragging you are just bragging, it would have to be compiled by quoting other posters humblebrags. Oh and I assume you were referring to MattP and his Vegas lifestyle.

21st Century Fox Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 Are we allowed to name Foxestalk members? For a Humblebrag or general pretentiousness? I guess you have to. My all time favourite humblebrag... James. Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 What's the term for when someone tries to show off about their own experiences while semi disguising it in some tenuous way? I'm thinking specifically about Alexikokopops and the time he was in the national papers looking sad at Stoke away. For awhile you couldn't move for stumbling on a multitude of posts on here of him banging on about that. I must admit I can be guilty of similar posts sometimes, e.g. waffling on about my holidays or London or whatever.

I inadvertently did one yesterday. Yeah they have, I guess they must have based it on the Macbook Air. It makes my iMac look like a piece of crap now. The 27-inch version must look like pure sex. The brag is that I own a recent iMac (granted not everyone may consider that a brag) the humble was that it's now going to be out-of-date.
Guest MattP Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 "Vegas lifestyle", love it. I've hardly got a pot to piss in the way business is at the minute, I even had to sit in standard class on the train on Saturday.

No-one should have to go through that, I had to sit in economy on the way back from the US....terrible experience.
Guest MattP Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 No-one should have to go through that, I had to sit in economy on the way back from the US....terrible experience. It was bad, fortunately it was early morning though so I could get a table and some space. I usually upgrade to Premium economy for the US, not as good as first or business but well worth the extra few hundred quid. I'm trying to justify upping to first on the way to New Zealand in March.
James. Posted 24 October 2012 Posted 24 October 2012 I've just been scanning the forum trying to find more and they're bloody everywhere. I quite like this one: Just literally about to head of to my Japanese class. God I need to get a life.
