Trav Le Bleu Posted 3 November 2012 Posted 3 November 2012 Ok you didn't like them, but what was actually wrong with them, bearing in mind they were family films? To be fair I've never been able to sit through a whole film although the wife and daughters like then a bit.I hate Jonny Depps crap Keith Richards impersonation and the stereotypical British characters also the stories are very boring. What Webbo says, plus it's all so derivative. It's all been done before and better. I know the whole Depp/Richards thing is deliberate, it's just embarrassingly bad, especially for an actor as good as Depp. I have to say though that I disliked it so much that I've never watched it again, nor any of the sequels. It's a Bruckheimer production though, which generally means all show and no substance - which pretty much sums it up.

I genuinely thought the first pirates film was superb, from Jack Sparrow's entrance to the undead pirate hordes and the classic double bluff betrayal. If it has been done before them I haven't seen anything like it, but then I've not seen many pirate films, they were out of fashion until this one. Compared to the Phantom Menace, it is a much more coherent film, with snappy dialogue that suits the period, but not incomprehensible, much simpler and more rounded characters but not one dimensional, a coherent story arc, and despite the love interest, it was under played and understated and only at times cheesey. Everything I hope Disney will bring to the star wars franchise, they are family films and Disney do them very well.
ithuriel Posted 3 November 2012 Posted 3 November 2012 The first pirate film was good, shame the sequels were inferior in every respect, a bit like the Matrix
Captain... Posted 3 November 2012 Posted 3 November 2012 The first pirate film was good, shame the sequels were inferior in every respect, a bit like the Matrix Second was good, third one had good moments but got a bit confused, the 4th one was ok, but I watched it in Spanish and trying to understand a Spanish Johnny Depp impersonator doing a Keith Richards pirate impression, using archaic Spanish, wasn't easy.
LCFCCHRIS Posted 4 November 2012 Posted 4 November 2012 All the pirate films were decent for me, apart from number 3 got too crazy and 'magic' orientated.
Haydos Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 Midichlorions ruined a lot of the magic. Jar Jar is an annoying **** who was thrust into ridiculous situations. The guy that played Palpatine was excellent and probably the most enjoyable thing about the series. For a film called The Phantom Menace, it should have been about The Phantom Menace. Emperors apprentices are always interesting but he was barely on screen. Boring trade story line = don't care. I want to see Sith v Jedi. Anakin was a twat for all 3 films basically, made so many stupid decisions that just seemed unrealistic and without basis. Directed at kids too much. That said, I'm excited at the possibility of a new trilogy but I'm not getting my hopes up.
Haydos Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 Sorry I'll respond properly, in terms of acting ability, maybe, but in these films they didn't work, I think in part because their characters were too complicated. In the originals, it was simple characters, innocent farm boy, cocky mercenary, headstrong princess, wise old sage, personification of evil, walking carpet, giant slug it didn't need thesbians to play them, and the dialogue was fairly simple and the character development simple but effective. As Harrison Ford, who you conveniently left off that list (along with Alec Guinness), said to Lucas. "George you can write this shit, but you can't say it." He was also very critical of his understanding of actors, he accused him of just expecting them to read the lines and that will be it, he also changed quite a bit of the dialogue and ad-libbed a lot. The originals didn't have Lucas solely in charge and other people were brought in to help, particularly with the dialogue, unlike the prequels which desperately needed someone to tell George what didn't work, you get the feeling he was surrounded by yes men. But I am getting away from my point, one of the problems with prequels was the characters, they were too complicated and didn't seem to develop organically, instead just changed to suit the mood of the shot. Take Padme, warrior, queen, politician, lover, what was her role in it? Or Binks, comedy bumbling fool to serious politician Obi Wan's character was fairly consistent, but I am struggling to sum him up easily, was he a mentor to Anakin, his saviour, or was he the big deal, the best, was he like an intergalactic policeman, or a guardian angel. Finally Christiansen, was he a petulant kid, a supremely talented Jedi, a flawed genius sort a bit of both (Christiano Ronaldo with a lightsabre) or was he a highly emotional loving caring dedicated person, tricked into being evil. At times respectful, at times cocky, at times headstrong and irrational, at times obedient and weak. The problem with having such complicated and over developed characters is it is very hard to act that way, when you don't really know how you should be acting. As much as McGregor and Portman are better actors, Fisher and Hamill had much simpler roles and it was much easier to find the character and maintain it.
Manwell Pablo Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 Who said they wanted to see Hamill Ford and Fisher in the new film lol Harrison will be about 75 by the time the film finally comes out!
ADK Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 Nothing wrong with them having cameos. Guiness wasn't exactly a spring chicken when he played obi-wan either.

Yeah he's character was written to be an old man though not shoe horned into a story for nostalgic and box office takings reasons!

anotherharboroughfox Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 Harrison Ford is "open" to the idea of playing Han Solo in Star Wars Episode VII... so long as all of his scenes be shot first.
Captain... Posted 12 November 2012 Posted 12 November 2012 Who said they wanted to see Hamill Ford and Fisher in the new film lol Harrison will be about 75 by the time the film finally comes out! I did, you wanna make something of it?!?!?!? Nothing wrong with them having cameos. Guiness wasn't exactly a spring chicken when he played obi-wan either. Exactly. Yeah he's character was written to be an old man though not shoe horned into a story for nostalgic and box office takings reasons! Well seeing as it is the continuation of the story, but a separate trilogy, I would assume it would be set further into the future, peace has been restored to the galaxy, Princess Leia and Han become galactic King and Queen and have lots of kids while Luke goes off to search out more surviving Jedis, and gets out the midichlorian reader to find some new ones to restore the council, the story will most likely centre on these new young Jedi trying to find their way through the force with a few mentors guiding them, such as Luke, they will probably be friends with Han's kids, and they will have mischievous young scamp adventures in the first of the trilogy but with a darker presence looming over them, that Luke and the other Jedi mentors are protecting them from. Then Luke will die, much like Qui Gonn and Obi Wan did in the first of the other trilogies, but the young Jedi will triumph but at what cost... The second of the trilogy will see the young Jedi strike out on their own to avenge the death of their master and at least one will be consumed by hate and turn to the dark side, probably at the end of VIII, and kill one of the other Young Jedi to save his new dark lord master Leia and or Han will die of old age too at this point leaving the ruling of the galaxy open for evil doers. The final of the trilogy will be a climactic light sabre duel between the once young Jedi, who are now powerful Jedi masters, the winner will determine who takes control of the galaxy, a Jedi Council supported democracy or a new galactic despot and his dark Jedi, good Jedi win peace will be restored and the world will be a happy place again. Christopher Lee must have been in his 80s too? Fvck that guy is old, fair play to him for doing Star Wars in his 80s.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 12 November 2012 Posted 12 November 2012 I hope there's more stuff about tax in it. That really made The Phantom Menace for me
