rico Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 Disney has agreed a deal to buy Lucasfilm from its founder George Lucas - and says it will make a new series of Star Wars movies. The US entertainment giant, which already owns brands such as Pixar, Marvel, ESPN and ABC, announced it is paying $4.05bn (£2.52bn) for the production company. It also confirmed it is making Star Wars Episode 7, which is scheduled to be released in 2015. Disney said the project would be the first in a new series of three Star Wars films with Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger revealing the plan is to release a new movie every two to three years. The deal also includes the rights to the Indiana Jones franchise, although Disney did not reveal if it planned to revive the films featuring the action hero, played by Harrison Ford. Kathleen Kennedy, the current co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will become its president and report to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Lucas, who created the Star Wars fictional universe and with it one of the most lucrative box office draws of all time, will be creative consultant on the new films. "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers," he said after the deal was announced. Lucas will become the second-largest individual holder of Disney shares, with a 2.2% stake. Disney will pay about half the purchase price in cash and issue about 40 million shares to complete the deal. Chief Financial Officer Jay Rasulo, in prepared remarks, said the deal would lower Disney's earnings per share by a low single-digits percentage in 2013 and 2014. He also said Disney would repurchase all of the issued shares on the open market within the next two years, on top of planned buybacks. The deal marks the third time in less than seven years that Disney has signed a massive deal to take over beloved studios or characters, part of its strategy to acquire brands that can be stretched across TV, movies, theme parks and the Internet. In early 2006, Disney struck a deal to acquire "Toy Story" creator Pixar, and in the summer of 2009 it bought the comic book powerhouse Marvel Entertainment.
Tielemans63 Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 Some things are better left as thay are. The prequels could have ruined the franchise but didn't (quite) - think this would though.
Captain... Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 Well they can't do a worse job of 7-9 than Lucas did of 1-3, is Lucas going to be involved in them?
Webbo Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 Disney has bought out Lucasfilm's rights to Star Wars and reckon it'll be out for 2015! I for one (if true) am very excited!
goose2010 Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 Apparently coming out in 2015, could be an epic summer or Christmas with avengers 2 and the justice league both due out that year
Amin Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 Excited and nervous at the same time. Really hope they don't fvck it up.
AKCJ Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 Could be amazing, could be shit. No middle ground with this, massive gamble from Disney.
Charl91 Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 I don't care what anyone says - I liked the Phantom Menace
Amin Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 Could be amazing, could be shit. No middle ground with this, massive gamble from Disney. Exactly. Unless the films are brilliant they will be classed as shit by most people.
Charl91 Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 Could be amazing, could be shit. No middle ground with this, massive gamble from Disney. A little, but not that much of a gamble. They're pretty much guaranteed to draw big numbers to see the first film that they make. The second and third are different matter, but either way, they will make money on the first one.

Star Wars have acquired a huge number of die-hard fans who will not be happy if the films are not up to scratch.
Captain... Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 Exactly. Unless the films are brilliant they will be classed as shit by most people. But the prequels have lowered expectations sufficiently, as will this Disney buy out, that they actually stand a chance of being well received even if they are not master-pieces, Lucas hammered home that they are nothing more than kids films with the Phantom Menace (as a stand alone film it is very watchable, but as the start of the greatest saga ever, it is a massive let down) 2 and 3 went someway to restoring the credibility of the series, but there was still too much clunky dialogue and just frankly ridiculous plots (such as the whole love story bollocks) and inconsistencies such as R2 being able to fly, and this mitochondrian bollocks. Do Disney now own the whole franchise? Or just the rights to the new ones, if so, and if they wanted to get the fans on side they would re-make 1,2 and 3 and deliver the films we actually wanted to see, not change the story, but just get rid of the awful dialogue, play down the love scene shit, less of Binks in PM and more of him in the later films where he is duped by Palpatine to vote in the senate on Amidala's behalf and give full control to him. Yes I am a massive geek when it comes to Star Wars, and I can see prequels as being good films just very poorly made, there are some great twists in there, but they are very much underplayed where as the crap stuff is so over done.
ADK Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 Tbh thought all the prequels were awful, 2 being the worst of the lot.
rico Posted 30 October 2012 Author Posted 30 October 2012 Would like it if they could find a way of bringing Darth Maul back.
Charl91 Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 but there was still too much clunky dialogue and just frankly ridiculous plots (such as the whole love story bollocks) and inconsistencies such as R2 being able to fly, and this mitochondrian bollock Mitochondria Yes, Jedi's have a super-natural amount of ATP! Not sure if that was intentional or not, but it made me laugh anyway....
Phube Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 I love the prequels purely for the fact that it shows how brilliant Emperor Palpatine is... his story arc is brilliant.
Charl91 Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 I also like Jar-Jar, Darth Maul and Liam Neeson. Needless to say, I'm in the minority of Starwars fans.
acooling08 Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 Well the prequels already murdered Star Wars for me, can't really destroy it any more.
Captain... Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 Mitochondria Yes, Jedi's have a super-natural amount of ATP! Not sure if that was intentional or not, but it made me laugh anyway.... Whatever they were call, they should never have invented a word for it, like it was something that could be measured, I think they were trying to distance themselves from the religious aspects of the force and make it more sciencey. Still something that should have and could have been avoided by simply having Qui Gon Jinn saying the force is very strong with this one.

Captain... Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 Edit: Can't hotlink to those pictures, have a link instead: http://www.b3ta.com/board/10873961 Just seen these by a top cartoony drawing stuff bloke More of his stuff here: http://www.happytoast.co.uk/
EnderbyFox Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 Hopefully Lucas isn't involved in the next few films at all Would be great if Christopher Nolan or Peter Jackson directed them!
Langston Posted 30 October 2012 Posted 30 October 2012 The original three were so excellent because the input of so many people was apparent, input that Lucas shat all over by constantly editing and needlessly changing the series. The prequels felt like him solely attempting to inflate his ego with each ear-piercing line from Jar Jar Binks or paedophile like stare from Hayden Christensen. I've a terrible feeling this trio of films will be like a car crash I can't help but watch for all the wrong reasons.
