Darkon84 Posted 31 October 2012 Posted 31 October 2012 Yet everyone was fantastic in the originals. Have you listened to any of the C3PO lines? Stop being snobs. I didnt think they were THAT bad The dialogue with Chewie was fantasic
Jon the Hat Posted 31 October 2012 Posted 31 October 2012 I have never understood the attention star wars got. I can only assume it was to do with the brilliant and groundbreaking merchandising, becuase the films are frankly not great. Good, but not great. I never saw the point of the remastering with stupid CGI. Making more films? Why not, no one has to watch them. I quite often dont watch a film, for example if I really enjoyed a book, or a foreign language version. It is also entirely possible to watch a film but disconnect it from the others in a "franchise". Enjoy it or dont in its own right. Makes lift much happier I find
Leicester_Numan Posted 1 November 2012 Posted 1 November 2012 Splinter Of The Minds Eye would make a good movie I didn't like that book. Although it was originally intended to be the sequel to A New Hope, reading it years after Return of the Jedi, the book came across as really pervy. Personally, I think they could do worse than start with Timothy Zahn's empire trilogy, which for those who haven't read it, is set 5 years after the death of the emperor
Bayfox Posted 1 November 2012 Posted 1 November 2012 Personally I think it is great that these companies are butchering my childhood memories, Transformers, Star Wars and I'm awaiting the Thundercats Movie with great expectation!!! There is a reason these things were great at the time, as it was ground breaking at that point, Transformers was a great cartoon with what seemed a good story line, when i was 8 or 9, but just making movies with fantastic CGI and altering the characters isn't the same, I accept it may look great. Star Wars was great at the time, it was something new and I loved it, still do and yes I will want to watch them to see where they take it, but maybe just maybe it should have been left alone and taken for what it was at the time.

It is simply not reaslitic to think the people who developed these stories and characters should just stop developing them. Why? You and the many others who dont wish to see this are welcome to not watch any of these new films. Why should the next generation be denied these characters in a format that appeals to them just becuase we enjoyed them differently?
Leicester_Numan Posted 1 November 2012 Posted 1 November 2012 For anyone interested in the books, the original trilogy is available for 2p, Splinter of the mind's eye for 1p & the prequels are 1p each from Amazon. EDIT. The superb empire trilogy is also available for 1p, 1p &13p respectively although it's advertised as the Thrawn trilogy. It's also available as an audio book narrated by Anthony Daniels (C3-PO)
21st Century Fox Posted 1 November 2012 Posted 1 November 2012 Personally I think it is great that these companies are butchering my childhood memories, Transformers, Star Wars and I'm awaiting the Thundercats Movie with great expectation!!! Already attempted it but it got cancelled. Some test footage got leaked.
Cat Burger Posted 1 November 2012 Posted 1 November 2012 So much 'opinion as fact' in this thread. I think that the originals are held in such high regard due to the nostalgia of 70's children, but they are of their time. The prequels, with their heavy use of CGI, are also very Zeitgeist. In my opinion, 'Return of the Jedi' is the worst of the lot. I was about 12 when Episode 1 came out, I'm biased. At least I can admit that. It is simply not reaslitic to think the people who developed these stories and characters should just stop developing them. Why? Captain... Posted 1 November 2012 Posted 1 November 2012 Already attempted it but it got cancelled. Some test footage got leaked. You think that is bad, and it is, this looks so much worse: Edit: and it's fake d'oh It does make me wonder if they will do the new Star Wars as an animated feature, it would give them more scope for cool bad ass fights, and be able to have Luke and Han without having to change the actors. If it is live action though it would be cool if Ford, Hamil and Fisher had cameos as their older selves.

I agree with this, it is hardly a new thing, look at the new adventures of he-man, or "rebooting" of comic book characters, at least there are so far no plans to remake the originals, although if they could remake 1-3 for me I would be very happy. Nobody is complaining about Batman or the x-men films, or Iron Man pissing on anyone's childhood memories, because they did a good job of it and gave them a modern twist, the problem with the prequels was they were not very well done, they were well made, but the acting and the story lines were really bad.
ADK Posted 1 November 2012 Posted 1 November 2012 Really? I think the originals are far superior. The phantom menace is the least bad of the prequels.
Captain... Posted 1 November 2012 Posted 1 November 2012 Really? I think the originals are far superior. The phantom menace is the least bad of the prequels. Phantom Menace benefits from better acting and some better characters, Liam Neeson, Darth Maul, limited Yoda speak and no Hayden Christiansen, as a kids film it is fine, Jar Jar and little Anakin are annoying but not the worst, the other films were better films overall, but had some atrocious acting, and a horrible love sub plot that just filled me with hate, and we all know what that leads to.
Guest Posted 1 November 2012 Posted 1 November 2012 Snobbism. I enjoyed all of the movies. Each trilogy is of its time. Kitsch - but fun. Hope the next 3 are as good.
FuriousFox46 Posted 1 November 2012 Posted 1 November 2012 Empire > Revenge > Return > Attack > Hope > Phantom

It is not snobbism to say they were poorly acted, Just watch this scene and tell me if Anakin is believable, or even McGregor, Lee on the other hand is a quality actor and dominates this scene, not helped by the script: This is a problem all the way through the prequels, Jake Lloyd, and Christiansen were the main characters but they were both poor actors, Portman and McGregor are just not believable, Try this scene: All very well and good until Christiansen turns up and just fails to deliver his lines with any sort of emotion when he is supposed to be going through emotional turmoil and letting his feelings take over and drag him to the dark side.

I concur, just watch them for what they are Entertainment not art! Horrible, but necessary or else why would he turn to the dark side and where would Luke and Leia come from!?!

Well horrible in the way it was done, I understand he had to have kids, but it was terribly done. I mean really really badly done.
Guest Posted 1 November 2012 Posted 1 November 2012 Cap Shrap - the first 3 were just as bad - acting , lines and plot. I guess you're mid 40's and watched them as a kid first time. I really liked all 6 but I don't think any of them were groundbreaking for their acting or their writing. Great entertainment. If you don't want to watch the next 3 then don't - but I'm sure you will.

Oh I will watch them and I will enjoy them, I am a big fan of star wars, although I'm only 31, my problem with the prequels is that they were so close to being good and there was a lot of good in them but spoilt it with poor casting and dreadful clumsy dialogue, and the fvcking love scenes, these were some great set pieces and action scenes and some very interesting ideas in there.
MPH Posted 2 November 2012 Posted 2 November 2012 I think I will watch them and enjoy them... and if Disney know whats good for them, then they will get a damn good director in..... But I just find it appalling that there is a possibility of them making more films after the last three are shown... That really would feel very wrong to me... THEN it would all be about money..

Of course it's about the money - what other reason is there? I hope they churn out a decent series linked to the whole saga - 10 seasons like Stargate would do me fine.

But i also like the idea that there would be a bit of integrity in keeping the original 9 and original idea of Lucas... that is what would make the films more special for me.... as i guess that was Lucas' idea. With stargate i dont think there was ever an intention of an original 9 films like there was with star wars....

But there has already been loads of spin-offs, whether it is the ewoks cartoon or droids, or the ewoks films, the books, the clone wars animated series, or even all the computer games which develop and enrich the star wars world.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 2 November 2012 Posted 2 November 2012 Christiansen is, without a doubt, one of the worst actors to have graced the silver screen. McGregor is one of the most over-rated ever (though he does a good Alec Guinness accent to his credit), by which I mean he's average (many people really rate him - I think for his early films). Portman is no Knightly, things could have been so much different for a slight casting change in episode 1! I quite enjoyed Ep. 1. As Cap says, no HC. Jake Lloyd wasn't so bad (remember, he's just a KID!) and Jar Jar can be ignored (and should have been culled for further films - his proposing Palpatine as Dictator-For-Life and the whole senate lapping it up is quite unbelievable!) Whatismore, the pod race is a great piece of cinema spectacle! 2 and 3 really were hugely, meh and don't have any stand out moments, other than filling in the gaps - which many SW fans already knew, just not in any detail. I'm hoping that the new films will utilise the copious amounts of background material that is already out there in the form of books and games. Surely we will see Mara Jade, the Solo twins, but I'm hoping for Admiral Thrawn and Kyle Katarn too. With so many fans already being familiar with characters like this, they would be fools to deviate too much.
