sphericalfox Posted 3 January 2013 Posted 3 January 2013 Unfortunately Adam's patter is unfunny, and actually is unoriginal. It's been done before. But due to his previous endeavours and attention, he'll get a job off this, as I've seen this linked elsewhere. As for Lamby's industrial application process. I can guess why he is unsuccessful. Every, yes every CV and jobapplication should be tailored to the job and company you are applying to. If you are lazy enough to think copy and paste and sending your basic cv to every company without a thought, then you will remain unemployed. Simples. A good HR person, or shortlisting manager can see this from a mile away.
Lamby Posted 3 January 2013 Posted 3 January 2013 But I only want admin/office jobs, which all require the same skills so why tailor your cv to every company when they all require exactly the same skills

Rincewind Posted 3 January 2013 Posted 3 January 2013 Read what the ad says then say you are brilliant at all the key points that they require. Hype up your better qualities and praise the company you are applying to. I would take this advice if I was your age.
Lamby Posted 3 January 2013 Posted 3 January 2013 This is that bit from my CV: I am interested in a career that gives me challenges and enables me to have specific on the job training related to the chosen career. I am keen to improve my work place competencies and I'm always prepared to learn and use new skills. I am confident and happy working within a busy working environment. Though a naturally quiet person, I have good communication skills gained from leadership within Scouts. This also shows I can mix with people comfortably and effectively. This was also reinforced within my voluntary administrator position as I had to communicate with other members of staff to provide a successful running of the office. I have a good standard in English and Maths and an above average ability in IT. I am keen to learn and can follow instructions promptly. I am looking forward to a fresh start and challenges. Furthermore, I am competent at multi-tasking and can cope well under pressure. I believe that with these skills I would be able to excel within any role and maintain the company standards. I am available for an immediate start and would welcome the opportunity to discuss my application with you at an interview.
pSinatra Posted 3 January 2013 Posted 3 January 2013 FAIL my sister is currently involved in recruiting someone in administration. It is quite shocking how bad some of the applications are, she says. First of all, it is clearly stated that a CV is not required & it is application form only........but over half the applicants can't follow instructions & have included CV's. Those applications are binned regardless, but she has out of interest taken a peek at some of the CV's & they are terrible........poor layout, not job specific & even spelling mistakes. It is a good job, with reasonable pay & would suit someone looking to get their foot on the ladder. She seems to think that the majority of applications are from people only interested in appearing to seek employment & protect their JSA.

But the things is that most Admin jobs that appear online on sites such as Jobseekers Direct/Gumtree/Reed etc do require a CV for the application as there is no other way of processing it. I've only seen a select few where you have to do a proper application form.

I've only seen a select few where you have to do a proper application form. I can appreciate what you're saying. What's important is following the instructions & not assuming anything. Like Rincewind says, the job advert will make a few key points about what they expect from the successful candidate & it might be worth tailoring your CV/application form to suit those requirements. I can imagine that there are hundreds or even thousands of applications for some jobs. They don't need much of an excuse to bin your form......so don't give them one. Good luck to everyone applying!!

How generic is that? Any employer would see that as being generic because it is not even specific to their company
Lamby Posted 3 January 2013 Posted 3 January 2013 I didn't write it myself so don't blame me Applied for 13 jobs today making it 17 for the month so far.
pSinatra Posted 3 January 2013 Posted 3 January 2013 I didn't write it myself so don't blame me Applied for 13 jobs today making it 17 for the month so far. It's your name at the top of the CV.......who else are they going to blame?? Do you have your CV saved & print your own copies at home? How much effort would it take to alter the document?
Guest MattP Posted 3 January 2013 Posted 3 January 2013 If you are based down south and struggling for interviews Lamby you should walk around with a car door over your head. Seems to work for Harry Redknapp.
Guest ttfn Posted 3 January 2013 Posted 3 January 2013 I didn't write it myself so don't blame me But you submitted it and put your name to it! There are a lot of good suggestions here - invest the time to follow them. Good luck.
StanSP Posted 3 January 2013 Posted 3 January 2013 I didn't write it myself so don't blame me Applied for 13 jobs today making it 17 for the month so far. Write it yourself then. Also, don't say you're naturally a quiet person. If you are going to say that, use it in a positive way. Better still, you probably don't need to say that part at all. I've also always been taught not to mention 'I' so many times. Don't keep repeating yourself. Less 'I am...', 'I can...' etc.
Rincewind Posted 3 January 2013 Posted 3 January 2013 Lamby's CV is not the way I was shown to do one. Mine has an order to it. Not in any particular order with bullet points. Education record Work record Skills Attributes Qualifications Interests There is more but I forget. With this it can be added to easily or tailored I say something like If given a job to do I endeavour to complete it to the best of my ability If you say you work well in a team this would mean helping others if they fall behind. Doing volunteer work would look better in the work record section than putting I have applied for hundreds of jobs for the career that I want without success. (or hinting at that) As I have said 30 years younger and I would be doing more but anyone in their twenties should not follow my example. The type of job I am looking for is not for a lifelong career and I assume most will agree not many employers will take on 55's and over with the aim of having them at the company for more than 10 years and retrain them when they can get Uni grads who want a career and are ambitious to progress in the company. That could be you Lamby. Tell your prospective boss that the company is your favourite and your dream is to work for them. I'm a quiet person but a better way of saying it might be saying you are a thoughtful person who keeps calm in a crisis and look for the best solution to problems.
Vardinhio Posted 4 January 2013 Posted 4 January 2013 I appreciate that anyone who doesn't have a job must be going through a very tough time, I've been there. However reading this thread just reinforces to me that lots of people out there just don't give it their all when looking. Lamby it is irrelevant that you didn't write something in your CV, this is your career, your life and your prospects. If you wont look out for it no one else will! Stating you are naturally a quiet person is just not needed, many employers may look at it negatively, especially if you are applying for call centre type work or other very basic roles. You need clarity about what you are looking for, be more specific. If it is admin work put admin on the CV and tailor it to organisational skills etc. If it is call centre work talk about your communication skills. Put real examples about achievements in your volunteer work or other things you have done. Prove to the employer that you can do what they want you to. I'm not being harsh but people just seem to think sending out CVs is sufficient when it just isn't enough. Have some pride in your job search, go impress these companies to the very best of your ability because they owe you nothing. I hope the new year brings good luck to all those really trying to find a job but for those just sending off CVs in a half-arsed effort to make sure the benefits keep coming in then there really isn't any proper advice or reason for anyone on here to help.
lavrentis Posted 4 January 2013 Posted 4 January 2013 Someone give him a job just so I can stop seeing him

Lamby Posted 4 January 2013 Posted 4 January 2013 Did a quick google and this came up: Harvey Wayne were previously known as Apex Solutions. They claim they are a management consultancy firm bit a sales firm. You will be expected to do direct sales in shopping malls and it pays commission only. My son worked a 12 hour shift and made £5 commission and paid £4 travelling expenses. I advised him to leave after his MD told him the name change was to do with "issues surrounding Nigerian Money Laundering"
