MC Prussian Posted 29 January 2013 Posted 29 January 2013 Go on pm me. Ill have a go! Im only doing it for a bit of fun before anyone starts getting all high and mighty. At to your post above, do you really believe people pay that much attention to a logo? Speaking as a joe bloggs off the street, i couldn't care less what the logo does, says, inspires or provokes. Im not trolling, i respect peoples line of work and the fact that you want to set a business up. Yes, people do pay attention. Consciously, but mainly without even thinking about it. It's the power of branding and advertising. And that's been known for quite a while now, dating as far back as the first true newspaper ads in the 19th century. Ask yourself - would you buy from a company with a really crappy or tacky logo/corporate design? What does such a look say to you personally? Do you know what they say about the "first impression"? As a graphic designer, if you're not interested in or if you can't relate to the company you're working and creating the logo, the brand, the corporate design for, there's no point in even trying. Because you're wasting your efforts on something you can't relate to and that makes no sense. Sensible graphic design is essential. Companies don't want to waste money on cheap CD stuff that doesn't last for at least a longer while, because the last thing you want to do as a company is (having) to change your name/logo/brand every year. It is cost-intensive and highly counter-productive. Regular CD changes spell disaster - or to be precise, unreliability/dodgy business. The companies that have racked up on global recognizability are usually the ones that have been in business for decades already, without having to change anything about their logo. A good logo is simple, timeless and represents the company to its core.

Following my plumber topic someone pm'd me suggesting their brothers company I looked at website and it looked like it had cost thousands to produce when I was looking for a local craftsman not some faceless entity. As it happens I was on wrong site and the proper one was much more down to earth, possibly self built and that appealed to me more.
goose2010 Posted 29 January 2013 Posted 29 January 2013 I'm a designer, send me through some info and I will draw you one up, wouldn't want paying just make a donation to foxes talk if you like it, if not you haven't lost anything

Ok, my current firm have sign written vans, but they nor my old boss (one man band) have a website nor do anything in the papers. you get people who are suspicious as to why they need to advertise believe it or not. Eh, our firm were working at Rob Kellys house in Leicestershire the other day. Didnt realise he was at forest

You're right, if small businesses look too "corporate" people like yourself are put off as you don't want to be just another number and think they'll get ripped off. I do a lot for people in those types of industry and try to meet the two in the middle. I wouldn't trust some bloke who turned up without a card, with a van that looked like crap as much as I wouldn't someone working for a huge company who probably doesn't give a shit about doing a good job / getting work from recommendations etc.

Logos of many the big companies are changing quite often, they just change them in quite subtle ways that the untrained eye would never spot.

MC Prussian Posted 30 January 2013 Posted 30 January 2013 The two firms I've worked for have never advertised. Ok, my current firm have sign written vans, but they nor my old boss (one man band) have a website nor do anything in the papers. you get people who are suspicious as to why they need to advertise believe it or not. Eh, our firm were working at Rob Kellys house in Leicestershire the other day. Didnt realise he was at forest Working solely by recommendation is a great thing. It saves you a lot of advertising costs. But... you need to get there first and that takes a while. I suppose the company you're working for is in existence for a while now and hasn't been founded only yesterday. And with your previous boss, I can only assume he's been in the business for decades already. For handymen, additional advertising isn't always the best option, I concur. Other companies in other sectors can't rely on that and/or are just getting started and need to take another approach.
MC Prussian Posted 30 January 2013 Posted 30 January 2013 Have put some comments above. Also, generally you are thinking of this as a logo - really a corporate identity is so much more, you should be looking at a range of branding, how it will apply to a range of media such as printed media, website, online, other digital, livery (if applicable) etc. if you have the budget a brand bible/brand guidelines is very important too. As such, you shouldn't be looking for someone to "make you a logo", they should be creating a brand for you. With this involves a lot of research, in fact most of the time will go on research and experimenting. You might end up with a purely typographic logo which you could recreate in 10 seconds - but the research and considered design that goes into this will be well worth it in the long run. Thanks for all the input so far (not just yours, danny). I'm fully aware of the fact that we're amateurs when it comes to corporate design. And the other agency I contacted before was honest enough to tell us that there's no point in using our own tacky ideas as some sort of template and scrapped them straightaway. As I've been told before, one of the sayings in graphic design is: "Beware, client is thinking!". Basically, I guess it all boils down to the company's industrial sector, the company's philosophy and what clients the company's after. PMs are on the way to the ones concerned (and yes, that includes you, Babs, so clear your inbox!! )

sphericalfox Posted 30 January 2013 Posted 30 January 2013 Software Development Consultancy. Software, not hardware eh? Looks like you probably don't need a brand like this then.

Webbo Posted 18 February 2013 Posted 18 February 2013 I'm thinking of a new avatar but I'm no good at photo shop. What I'd like is a white line drawing of this badge on a dark blue background, sort of inspired by Wigan's badge this year. There a rep point in it if any of you could knock one up for us.
