Rincewind Posted 13 March 2013 Posted 13 March 2013 DNO will hopefully cover the local participants aiming to get into the England side. I have been asked to help report on their progress. This may mean having to visit various grounds. Last year West Bromich and Man United's training ground was visited. I shall be wearing my City shirt if we have to go there. From August 10th to August 18th, 2013, 64 nations will take part in the 11th edition of the Homeless World Cup annual tournament, in Poznan, Poland. The city of Poznan is well known for its international sporting events such as International Show Jumping, the IFC Canoe Sprint World Cup and the International ATP Poznan Open. Poznan was also a UEFA Euro 2012 host city. The competition will take place at Lake Malta, a popular destination for locals and tourists throughout the summer months. Lake Malta offers an excellent combination of scenic surroundings and professional sports facilities. 48 countries will participate in the men’s competition and 16 in the women’s competition with many new women's teams and new mixed team: Northern Ireland. For more information on the participating teams and the event itself, see the official press release here.
Jon the Hat Posted 13 March 2013 Posted 13 March 2013 Some Global big society shit going on there. Good stuff.
MooseBreath Posted 13 March 2013 Posted 13 March 2013 If you're physically fit enough to play football, socially active enough to know that this is happening, and possess the necessary motivation and self-organisational skills to get yourself out there, then surely you can learn how to sweep up enough hand outs to prevent yourself becoming homeless, or even get yourself a job
Zingari Posted 13 March 2013 Posted 13 March 2013 Presumably all ties will be played over 2 legs , Away and Further Away ?
Corky Posted 13 March 2013 Posted 13 March 2013 Presumably all ties will be played over 2 legs , Away and Further Away ? At least the Sloop John B song won't get an airing.
Zingari Posted 13 March 2013 Posted 13 March 2013 At least the Sloop John B song won't get an airing. Do you think they'll really rub it in and play that old Tom Jones' song , " it's good to touch the green green grass of home" ?
Father Ted Posted 13 March 2013 Posted 13 March 2013 I'm pretty sure this is where Bebe got scouted who plays(ed) for Man United....
Saxondale Posted 13 March 2013 Posted 13 March 2013 Surely I can't be the only person thinking this: Hosting a football tournament and transporting players around the world to get to it must cost an absolute fortune. Why not spend that money on giving a load of them a bed for a few weeks?

Why not spend that money on giving a load of them a bed for a few weeks? Read the blurb. This is about showing them they can be part of something and are not completey useless. Giving them a bed doesn't do that now does it? A bit like the difference between feeding Africa through aid and treating it failry in trade so it can feed itself.
Mike Oxlong Posted 13 March 2013 Posted 13 March 2013 Something ironic about sending our homeless to Poland.

Thank you for a sensible unbiased. non-stereotyped reply. I'm not sure that some want to read the blurb. They see homeless and immediately think 'wasters' 48 countries will participate in the men’s competition and 16 in the women’s competition. The Homeless World Cup appoints one partner organisation per country to coordinate all year round football activities amongst homeless and marginalised people in 70 countries. The lives of homeless people are changed substantially as a result of being involved in football.“I was on the street and then I started playing football and thankfully I was lucky enough to be selected to represent my country,†said James Horsburgh a former player . “It completely changed my way of thinking and now I have a house and a job.
Guest MattP Posted 13 March 2013 Posted 13 March 2013 Celtic's fans and players could pass themselves off as a country in this.

Yes and letting the work shy dossers go on a free holiday to play football is not going to put a roof over their heads either is it ? This has to be another pathetic left wing stunt , no doubt the Daily Mirror will run a special pull out supplement which can be later used by the homeless to wrap themselves in at night down in cardboard city.

So all homeless people are work shy tossers? Now, now Flow I thought you were a former serviceman yourself.
Rincewind Posted 13 March 2013 Author Posted 13 March 2013 Some of the perceptions about the homeless are unbelievable. To think that sleeping rough in the freezing cold in a shop doorway with only a blanket to keep warm is preferable to having a place with four walls and heating is a gem. Anyone that thinks that they want to live like that should try it. I work alongside people that have been homeless and moved from hostel to hostel. The reasons that they ended there range from depression to domestic violence. They have shown tremendous courage to turn their lives around and show that they have intelligence and can contribute to society. Projects like the homeless world cup enables others who have fallen on hard times to do the same.
Zingari Posted 14 March 2013 Posted 14 March 2013 I'm not trying to be cynical here and I'm not sure if I'm missing something obvious , but if I was homeless I'd appreciate some help in getting me properly housed rather than the likes of Nike arranging a fookin football tournament to raise awareness and give a small minority of homeless people a sense of purpose . How many depressives and victims of domestic abuse are going to be helped by this wheeze ?

How many depressives and victims of domestic abuse are going to be helped by this wheeze ? Probably more than you think. Any scheme which raises awarenes of the plight of others will have some impact. That's why we have Comic Relief and Children in Need etc. It may well be that certain benefactors will make contributions that we will be unaware of as a result of the profile of this sort of event. It's easy to dismiss it as a stunt but stunts do attract attention in both good and bad ways. It has to be hoped that the good outweighs the bad and results in some positive benefit for those in need. If people sat around hand-wringing and doing nothing to raise awareness then no-one would be helping anyone. How do we know this won't result in more homeless being housed? In any case we as individuals have the choice to contribute to or ignore whatever we choose in terms of helping others. There can be but a handful of people who "choose" to become homeless. No-one deserves to be written off.
Rincewind Posted 14 March 2013 Author Posted 14 March 2013 It's not just this country. It is a world wide tournament. I doubt it will make some become aware though. They are too stuck in their ways and will dismiss any compassion for those worse off themselves as 'leftie' talk Well I suppose it is one excuse for closing their eyes to make them feel better.I sincerely hope that they never go through some of the things that people I have MET AND SPOKEN TO have. Zingari I don't include you as one of the above. The number on Foxestalk is as few in % as there are those homeless that choose to live that life. I never intended this topic to turn into a debate about the homeless. I thought it would interest people as this is a forum for football fans.
ozleicester Posted 14 March 2013 Posted 14 March 2013 Last time this was on, we saw dozens of news reports and tv stories etc about the event. It raises awareness and perhaps teaches us that the homeless are human beings and many of them, who with a little help can become functioning valuable members of society. Even if you look at it in a purely financial sense (which the modern word seems to think is the only judgement of value)...If you invest $1000 to get someone off benefits and it works... once theyve been off benefits for 6 motnhs, youve saved your $1000. If you look at it in a humane sense, these are people who, but for the grace of where we were born, or who we were born to... are you and i.... or our brothers, sisters , mums, dads. If for a brief time in their often horrific and tragic lives they get to feel good about themselves and the world around them... then its still $1000 well invested! Fvck we are a selfish world sometimes.

The amount of time this forum dedicates to the discussion of money is staggering at times. Good on you for putting the info together and letting the world know more.
MooseBreath Posted 14 March 2013 Posted 14 March 2013 In any case we as individuals have the choice to contribute to or ignore whatever we choose in terms of helping others. If only. I definitely didn't choose for my income tax to be handed out to an assortment of layabouts to spend on fags and booze.
Raj Posted 14 March 2013 Posted 14 March 2013 Sorry if im being thick, ignorant or just plain stupid which i probably am...but what the point in a homeless World Cup?
leicsmac Posted 14 March 2013 Posted 14 March 2013 If only. I definitely didn't choose for my income tax to be handed out to an assortment of layabouts to spend on fags and booze. True, and I didn't choose for mine to go to bailing out financial institutions ran by rich spivs who should have known better than to do ridiculous speculating with other peoples money, or for sending UK soldiers out on pointless, unnecessary wars either come to that. Opt-in taxes anyone?
Zingari Posted 14 March 2013 Posted 14 March 2013 Sorry if im being thick, ignorant or just plain stupid which i probably am...but what the point in a homeless World Cup? It’s primary purpose is to raise awareness of the plight of millions of people throughout the world who are homeless not because useless, incompetent, corrupt and callous governments aren’t fookin doing enough about making sure they are building enough homes for the people and sheltered accommodation for the vulnerable, but because people like us are unaware of the problem and need to do more. Now say you’re sorry for all the misery you’re causing!
Mike Oxlong Posted 14 March 2013 Posted 14 March 2013 I think homeless people should play more bingo. When else can they say they've got house.
